COLD CALLERS We have received several reports over the last couple days of two Ford Transit vans and a maroon Mitsubishi Shogun travelling around the island. The occupants of these vehicles are trying to sell items of machinery including generators. We work closely with Isle of Wight Trading Standards, and we would both like to remind all residents on the island to be aware of purchasing items from the back of vehicles from a stranger. If in doubt, please don t purchase. Thank you for your co-operation Appeal for information after Newport burglary We are appealing for information after a burglary at a car repair workshop in Newport. Between 8pm on Tuesday 2nd of May and 8.30am on Wednesday 3rd of May, entry was gained to a workshop at Chris Scott Car Sales on Forest Road. Nearly 16,000 worth of tools and vehicles were taken. Two quad bikes and two off road motorcycles, including a child s motorbike, were stolen. A 36-year-old man from Freshwater was arrested in connection with this incident. He has been released but remains under investigation. If you have any information relating to this case, please call 101 quoting reference ' ', or contact Crimestoppers anonymously.

Outboard motor thefts! Please keep a look out in around harbours/boat yards etc. There has been a number of outboard motor thefts across the Island. If you notice any suspicious vehicles or suspicious person(s) around boat yards etc. - Then please report to the Police on 101. CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE Use good quality marine purpose locks for hatches. Secure loose property such as outboard motors and dinghies to the deck using good quality hasps and marine fit padlocks or take them home. Fit an alarm. It will act as a deterrent if your boat is located where someone can hear it. If your alarm system notifies you if someone is on board your boat, will you be in a position to respond to it? Alternately fit a GPS tracking device. Many items are already marked with some sort of serial number, hull identification numbers on dinghies, engine numbers on outboards, serial numbers on electronics and life rafts; make sure that you record these details somewhere that you can find them again if you need them. Mark your property with overt and covert markings such as indelible pens, uv markings or forensic solutions with a house or club post code. Register your property for free on Take photographs of your property. When buying second hand goods don t assume that the property is legitimate. Check out as much as you can about the property and the seller. Fit an anti-siphon device, locking fuel caps or locking bar to your fuel tank. When choosing a marina consider if it has CCTV, on-site security and what precautions are in place to prevent access to pontoons. Check that your boat is checked regularly. Ensure the Harbour master or club have your current contact details.

Help protect your rural property against thieves By following a few simple tips, you can help protect your rural property against burglaries. These basic measures needn t cost a lot of money: Place all tools and garden equipment in locked sheds and garages. Secure more expensive items, such as mowers and bikes, to an anchor point within the shed or garage. Mark all items with postcode and serial numbers using UV pens or forensic marking kits. Register the details for free on Record the make, model and serial number for each item this helps us identify stolen property. Take a camera phone picture of vehicle identification number (VIN) plates or product detail stickers. Take photographs of items such as statues and garden furniture if they are unusual, for easy identification at a later date. Fit a shed alarm DIY stores sell them. Do you want an alarm that makes a loud noise to alert you? Or is the outbuilding so remote this would be pointless? Some alarms will send a text to multiple phone numbers and call you as well. Ensure you put up signage that says THIS BUILDING IS ALARMED. They can be as little as 20.

Some more useful advice If you are considering CCTV, it can only do so much for you unless you are monitoring it 24/7. Some CCTV will alert you via mobile phone and/or when it detects movement. These are often the most useful as it will alert you to someone on your premises in live time. Keep the structure in good repair, use coach bolts to secure locks, these can only be turned from the inside of the shed, so can t be removed from the outside. Place pea shingle around the shed so that it will cause a noise when crunched underfoot. Consider covering windows with curtains to obscure the view of the contents. Consider external lighting. Ensure the garden fences are in good repair between neighbours to prevent unlawful access. Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property. Talk to your neighbours about local issues and what to watch out for. Think about setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Look into forensic marking solutions such as Selecta DNA ( and Smart Water ( Used in connection with other layers of security, they can be an effective deterrent. For reputable services visit Buy with Confidence: Remember Always report any unusual vehicles or persons in the area to the police with as much detail as possible. Thieves often work across many different counties which can make it hard for police forces to track them. Your information could be the vital piece we are missing.

Car security Always lock your car, wind up the windows and close the sunroof, even if you re only leaving it for a few minutes. You should also double check it s locked before leaving. It only takes a few seconds for your valuables to be stolen from an unlocked car. For extra security: fit a car alarm use a steering wheel lock get an immobiliser, this stops the engine from starting if the car is being stolen always park your car in well-lit areas in full public view when stationary in traffic, keep your doors locked and windows up take your sat nav with you and wipe away any marks left by the suction pads don't leave items in the glove compartment if you have a garage, use it Never leave valuable possessions such as handbags, laptops, phones or sat navs on show inside a vehicle. This makes it much more likely to be targeted by thieves. Even items of little value, such as shopping bags and clothing, may tempt a potential thief to break into the vehicle to see whether they contain anything worth stealing. Keep your possessions out of view, or take them with you.
