5 Part B Railway Group Standard Date August 1996 Page 3 of 6 1 Purpose 1.1 The purpose of this standard is to specify the mandatory requirements for triangular warning signs denoting Danger: electricity and supplementary labels to be fitted to electrical equipment installed on rail mounted vehicles operating on Railtrack controlled infrastructure. The triangular warning signs and supplementary labels shall comply with the Health & Safety (Safety Signs & Signals) Regulations, 1996, so that the safety information is presented in a consistent manner throughout the railway industry. 2 Scope 2.1 The contents of this Standard apply to electrical equipment fitted to rail mounted vehicles. 3 Definitions 3.1 Electrical equipment Electrical equipment includes anything used, intended to be used or installed for use, to generate, provide, transmit, transform, rectify, convert, conduct, distribute, control, store, measure or use electrical energy. 3.2 Extra Low Voltage (ELV) Normally not exceeding 50V a.c. or 120V ripple free d.c., whether between conductors or to earth. 4 Warning signs and 4.1 Any cover or door which, if removed or opened, exposes labels equipment energised at ELV which is not provided with overcurrent or short circuit protection, shall carry a triangular warning sign denoting Danger: electricity in accordance with BS A supplementary label shall also be fitted to the cover or door to specify the action which must be taken if the equipment needs to de-energised 4.2 Any cover or door, which if removed or opened, exposes equipment energised in excess of ELV, shall carry a triangular warning sign denoting Danger: electricity in accordance with BS A supplementary label shall also be fitted to the cover or door to specify the action which must be taken if the equipment needs to be de-energised. 4.3 There may be occasions where, because of the size of the cover, it is not possible to fit a legible supplementary label and a triangular warning sign. In these circumstances a triangular warning sign shall be fitted to the cover and, if practicable, the supplementary label located adjacent to the cover. R A I L T R A C K 3

6 Railway Group Standard Date August1996 Page 4 of 6 Withdrawn Document 4.4 Where triangular warning signs and supplementary labels may become illegible, for example on underframe mounted equipment or in a dirty environment, then either: the triangular warning signs and supplementary labels shall be fixed to an internal secondary cover; or, if there is no internal secondary cover the triangular warning signs and supplementary labels shall be fixed to the primary cover and an appropriate schedule shall be in place to ensure that the triangular warning signs and supplementary labels are legible. 4.5 Triangular warning signs and supplementary labels shall be sited to ensure that they do not obscure or obstruct important features. 4.6 Supplementary labels shall have black legend on a yellow (to BS 5378) background. All triangular warning signs and supplementary labels shall be durable and shall be permanently fixed to the primary or secondary cover. 4.7 It is not necessary to fit supplementary labels on battery boxes. Battery boxes shall have triangular warning signs and Explosive material signs fitted. 4.8 Existing inter-vehicle jumper equipment having a 'red flash' warning symbol on the inspection covers shall be acceptable provided that the 'flash' is conspicuous. 4.9 Typical triangular warning signs and supplementary labels in use on rail mounted vehicles are shown on the drawings detailed in Reference A.5. The triangular warning sign and the supplementary label can be combined as one sign. 4 R A I L T R A C K

7 Railway Group Standard Date August 1996 Page 5 of 6 5 Exceptions 5.1 Certain covers or doors are exempted from the requirements of this standard because of their unique locations or arrangements. These are: Traction Motor Commutator and Connection Box Covers. It is not necessary for the commutator or connection box covers of Traction Motors to be labelled if the only access to these covers is from the underside of the vehicle Domestic fittings. It is not necessary to fit labels to 240 V "Domestic Fittings" e.g. Socket Outlets to BS1363, Shaver Supply Unit to BS 3535, etc Shoegear and shoefuses. It is not necessary to label the shoefuse or any equipment on the shoebeam on 3rd or 4th rail vehicles Inverters rated at 100 watts or less. It is not necessary to label any inverter rated at 100 watts or less or any associated exposed equipment Track Circuit Actuator (TCA). It is not necessary to label track circuit actuators (TCA) operating at a voltage level up to and including 57V ac at 165 khz Roof mounted 25kV equipment This standard does not apply to the siting of roof mounted, exposed 25kV current collection equipment.
