1 OUR MISSION: TO LIMIT THE LOSS OF LIFE AND PROPERTY THROUGH PLANNING, PREVENTION AND RESPONSE On August 10, Firefighter/Paramedic Frank Villari repels from a catwalk during a TRT (Technical Rescue Team) training session hosted by the Skokie Fire Department. Neighboring fire departments were part of the exercises held at the North Shore Center of the Performing Arts in Skokie. The rescue scenario involved firefighters descending and ascending from ropes to save victims. Volume XI Issue VIII

Responded to the 700 block of Busse Hwy for the smoke in the apartment building. Found a smoke detector had activated due to burnt food. The detector woke up the occupant that had left pizza in the oven that they had forgotten about. The unit was ventilated and companies returned in service. Responded to twenty-one calls for service, several of which were related to the severe weather overnight into August 15 th. Engine 35 responded to 4500 block of North New England in Harwood Heights for a confirmed garage fire. They arrived as the second Engine. The fire was promptly extinguished and the garage was salvageable. Responded to an EMS incident at Maine South varsity football game for the patient who passed out. Responded to an activated fire alarm at 200 S. Lincoln, Lincoln Middle School, and found an overheated electrical panel. Crews worked with the building engineer to isolate the problem. 5

7 August 27 August 27 August 28 Responded to the 1300 block of North Western Avenue for an activated fire alarm in a single-family residence. As the homeowner arrived on the scene, companies made entry and found food overcooked on the stove, which had not caused a fire yet but had generated sufficient smoke to activate the smoke detector and fire alarm. Responded with two divers to a MABAS Division III Dive box requested by the Wilmette Fire Department. Divers from the Division III team recovered one victim from Lake Michigan. Responded to a motor vehicle versus motorcycle crash at the intersection of Chester Avenue and Gillick Street. The motorcycle had 2 riders, who were transported to LGH. Dive Boat FIRE INVESTIGATION Lieutenant Derek Decker Investigation Summaries August 24 All Park Ridge Fire Equipment responded for a reported car fire with a person trapped inside. Upon arrival of Park Ridge Police officers, a heavily involved car fire with an occupant inside was confirmed. Park Ridge Police officers worked to extinguish the occupant and pulled the victim away from the burning vehicle. Fire companies arrived and began a fire attack on the car while EMS crews tended to the critical patient. The fire was extinguished rapidly with a pre-connected hoseline, but the extent of the fire resulted in a total loss of the vehicle with an estimated 6

8 Investigation Photo value of $5,000. The fire victim was treated and transported to Lutheran General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators from the Park Ridge Police and Fire Departments determined the fire was intentionally set with the motive being suicide. The fire was classified as incendiary. Remnants of the vehicle fire with a fatality Training Battalion Chief Scott Sankey Daily Quick Drills Each week the Training Division assigns a quick drill to be discussed at the morning roll call. The quick drills for August included power lines down and rules of engagement. Report of the Week Beginning in August, the report of the week (ROTW) program was started. Each week, the shifts are assigned a report from the National Firefighters Near Miss web portal. The site provides firefighters a place to anonymously document and share their close calls and near miss experiences with other firefighters around the country. By sharing these reports we hope to prevent similar situations from happening in the future. The reports review in August were; wear your helmet/keep your head, heat index of 100 degrees, and check your roof before you move. Word of the Week 7

9 Each week a shift member at each station is assigned a word. The member researches the word as it relates to the fire service and presents his/her findings to the rest of his station during the morning roll call meeting. The words for August included IDLH, fissure, unified command, and shock load. Tool of the Month All department members reviewed the operation of the manual and hydraulic rescue and forcible entry tools. Target Safety Online Training All department personnel completed an online refresher course in Bloodborne Pathogen Awareness and Safety. Truck 36 Forward Lay All department members practiced setting up a water supply for Truck 36 using a forward lay. Truck 36 as a Portable Standpipe All three shifts practiced using the elevated platform of Truck 36 as a portable standpipe. The drill was conducted at the Station 36 training tower. Multiple handlines/hotel packs were then deployed from platform. Boat Operations All black shift personnel practiced deploying and driving the dive rescue boat at Axehead Lake. Blue Card Incident Command All department Lieutenants continued working towards completion of the 50-hour Blue Card Incident Command online training program. MABAS Division III Special Teams Members of the Fire Investigation, HAZMAT, URRT (Dive), and TRT teams participated in Division III training drills. Outside Training No outside training this month. Special Teams Battalion Chief Scott Sankey Hazardous Materials Team (HAZMAT) Members of the Park Ridge Fire Department participated in a 4 hour metering class for hazardous materials detection. The drill was held in Glencoe on August 24th. 8

10 Underwater and Rescue and Recovery Team (URRT) Members of the Park Ridge Dive Team participated in a MABAS Division IIII dive training exercise hosted by Highland Park. The drill was held at Park Avenue Beach along the shores of Lake Michigan. The training focus was on dive search patterns and boat operations in a large body of water. On August 27, two team members responded to Wilmette for the report of a 15-year old male that was swept into Lake Michigan by high waves along the shore. Rescue divers Zeke Kuzmanovich and Robert Sempoch responded to the incident as part of a MABAS Division III dive box request by the city of Wilmette. Both divers assisted in the recovery of the victim from the lake. Technical Rescue Team (TRT) The Park Ridge TRT participated in a rope rescue scenario held at the Skokie Performing Arts Center. The scenario included saving multiple victims rescued from various heights. This was a Division III drill and multiple departments were involved. Apparatus & Equipment Battalion Chief John Hanson Due to the high amount of miles and the stresses that the vehicles are put under, it is critical that we perform routine and emergency maintenance in cooperation with the City Garage. CPR and First Aid classes 51 people attended CPR and First Aid classes in the month of August. The following classes were provided: 1 Health Care Provider class 10

12 1 Heart Saver First Aid and CPR classes 1 Heart Saver AED class CPR and First Aid training was provided to: 20 faculty and staff from St. Andrew School 16 people in our 2 public classes 15 employees from Department of Agriculture in Des Plaines Park Ridge Fire Explorer Post 3536 Only one meeting was held during the month of August and was held on the 10 th. During that meeting, ten Explorers participated in team building exercises. At the second meeting on September 18 th, the police and fire Explorers will host a pig roast from 12 noon until 6 pm lat at JD Kadds on Northwest Highway. All proceeds will be split between the two Explorer posts. Monthly Tip Be Ready! September is National Preparedness Month Get A Kit You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours, or it might take days. In addition, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment, and telephones may be cut off for days, or even a week or longer. Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit: Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both Flashlight and extra batteries First aid kit Whistle to signal for help Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food) Local maps Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger 11

13 AdAdditonal Items To consider Adding to an Emergency Supply Kit: Prescription medications and glasses Infant formula and diapers Pet food and extra water for your pet Cash or traveler's checks and change Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container. You can use the Emergency Financial First Aid Kit (EFFAK) - PDF, 277Kb) developed by Operation Hope, FEMA and Citizen Corps to help you organize your information. Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information from Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person. Consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate. Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes. Consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate. Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.
