4 Blue Hostas Blue hostas are very calming grown beside water or flowing in amongst busier flowering perennials in a border. They retain their best blue colour in shade, some, like Bam Bam Blue, maintaining a good blue for the whole season. The increasing number of Halcyon sports with combinations of blue and white or blue and cream makes the choosing more difficult. There is also a growing family of the small ouse Ears hostas (opposite) to accommodate. It is just as well they stay small! Our pick of the blue hostas is Blue ammoth because it has proved itself a great garden plant with a beautiful shade of powder blue. page 11 4 Secure online shopping

38 Bamboos See Paul Whittaker on the BBC at Cheslea Flower Show One of my favourite bamboos is the Phyllostachys aureosulcata Spectabilis with its bright golden culms and for its great height. Paul Whittaker For most people, the thought or vision of a Bamboo is a tropical giant from a wild equatorial jungle. Although the plants from these hotter climates are more numerous than their temperate relatives, there are well over 300 species, varieties and cultivars hardy on our islands. These temperate bamboos are mostly all evergreen and without doubt some of the hardiest plants in British gardens, many native to the harsh climates of the Himalayas, East China and Korea. Bamboos are fast gaining in popularity, their winter greenery and constant movement add a different dimension to the garden. Choice can be made from foliage and canes (culms), specimen plants, ground cover or screening. Habits vary from the tight clump forming to the incredibly fast spreading, with heights up to 40. Cane colours go from gold, through blue and green to red, deep purple and black. The foliage is as varied, ranging from thin almost needle like to massive ashet sized leaves, usually green. However within the genera there are some striking variegations, white, cream and yellow stripes, streaks and mottling. Combine some of the above and you have a recipe for a group of outstanding ornamental plants. page 45 R C S L G Running Clump forming Small metres edium metres Large metres Giant...7+ metres Delivery included!
