1 Perennial Plants for the Shade from Hallson Gardens Actaea 'Misty Blue' Price: $12.75 Actaea 'Misty Blue' forms a 2 to 3 foot multi-stemmed clumping mound of soft blue-green foliage that is topped with clusters of white flowers in summer followed by white berries in fall. It is a native plant that thrives in the rich but dry, woodland garden. Adiantum pedatum Adiantum pedatum, the Eastern maidenhair fern, has thin but sturdy, 24 to 30" high wiry black stems holding up feathery, circular fronds that branch outward in a flat, fan-like position with each branch carrying 10 to 20 horizontal leaflets. Aruncus 'Misty Lace' PP#15798 Price: $8.75 Aruncus 'Misty Lace' is a cross between Aruncus aethusifolius x Aruncus dioicus with fine, lacy, astilbe-like foliage topped with large, creamy-white, feathery plumes on dark red stems in early to mid summer. Grows 18 to 24" tall and wide. Aruncus 'Noble Spirits' Price: $8.75, 3-4: $8.00, 5-9: $7.00, 10+ $6.00 Aruncus aethusifolius 'Noble Spirits' is a selection of dwarf goat's beard with finely cut foliage and dense creamy white flowers in summer forming a mound that is about 12" high, like a dwarf astilbe but better for the dry shade garden.

2 Asarum canadense Price: $7.75, 3-4: $7.00, 5+ $6.00 Asarum canadense, Canadian wild ginger, is a native woodland plant with satiny and fuzzy, medium green heart shaped leaves with brownpurple flowers at soil level. It grows 6 to 10" high and spreads 24" or more to make a great shady groundcover. Asarum europaeum Asarum europaeum, European ginger, is a handsome, shady groundcover with glossy, dark, evergreen leaves with brown-purple flowers at soil level. It grows 3 to 5" high and 12" wide, spreaading by seed to make a great shady groundcover. Asplenium scolopendrium Asplenium scolopendrium, or Hart's-tongue fern, has 16" upright and arching, leathery and strap-like, glossy green, evergreen fronds that can grow up to 3" wide. It prefers drier, alkaline soil but is also fairly adaptable and can tolerate damp soils so long as the crowns are set at soil level. Asplenium scolopendrium 'Angustatum' Asplenium scolopendrium 'Angustatum' is a narrow, ruffled form of Hart's tongue fern with 6 to 12" long, glossy green, evergreen fronds with crimped, ruffled edges. It is hardy and very attractive but slow to develop, so may not work in every garden. Syn. Asplenium s. 'Angustifolia'.

3 Asplenium x ebinoides Asplenium x ebinoides, known as Scott's spleenwort or dragon's tail fern, is a hybrid walking fern with small, irregularly toothed, pointed fronds and from the tips of each frond emerge small plantlets that have the ability to root into the neighboring soil. Give it rich, well-drained but moist soil for best results, though plants are not particularly easy to grow and may be short lived. Astilbe 'August Light' Price: $7.75, 3+ $7.00 to late summer. 6 Athyrium 'Applecourt' Athyrium 'Applecourt' is an attractive crested form of the ever popular Japanese painted fern. The fronds are burgundy, green, and silver, with crested or split tips, growing 18 to 24" high. Athyrium 'Branford Rambler' Athyrium 'Branford Rambler' is a vigorous, running lady fern that spreads from underground rhizomes. It has upright, dark green fronds growing to 24" with maroon to red central stems. Athyrium 'Burgundy Lace' PP#15072 Price: $10.75, 3-4: $10.00, 5+ $9.00 Athyrium 'Burgundy Lace' is a selection of Japanese painted fern with new fronds that are a rich burgundy with silver stripes along the veins and at the tips of the pinnae. As the season progresses the fronds turn more silvery green with purple midribs. Athyrium 'Ghost' Athyrium 'Ghost' is a cross between the lady fern and the painted fern, giving us a distinctly upright, 24 to 36" tall fern with silvery pinnae that contrast nicely against reddish-purple stems. Selected at Plant Delights Nursery, it was found to grow 3 feet tall and over 6 feet wide. Use it with large, dark green hostas or dark leaf cimicifuga for a terrific foliage contrast.

7 Athyrium 'Lady in Red' Athyrium 'Lady in Red' is an upright lady fern with light green fronds accented by reddish stems. It can grow up to 30" tall in ideal conditions and the red will intensify as it matures. Athyrium 'Metallicum' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Athyrium 'Metallicum' is a selection of Japanese painted fern with a silver metallic overlay to go with nice purple tones and reddish stems and veins. It is an excellent grower with an arching and mounding habit growing about 18" high and wide. Athyrium 'Pearly White' Athyrium 'Pearly White' is a Japanese painted fern without the usual purple overlay, giving it a creamy white glow in the shade garden. It grows 15" high and wide. Athyrium 'Regal Red' and wide. Athyrium 'Regal Red' is an excellent selection of Japanese painted fern with striking red veins and reddish stems that stand out nicely against the silvery green foliage. It forms an attractive arching mound, 18" high Athyrium 'Victoriae' Price: $8.75 Athyrium 'Victoriae' is a very attractive lady fern with deep green fronds and criss-crossing pinnae, coming to a point with a crested tip, giving it the common name of the criss-cross lady fern. It forms an upright, arching clump, 18 to 24" high and wide.

8 Athyrium otophorum Athyrium otophorum, the eared lady fern, has 12 to 18" pale green fronds with purple-burgundy stems and attractive maroon crosiers when they emerge. As the season progresses they mature to a dusky gray-green but keep their reddish stems. Brunnera 'Alexander's Great' Price: $10.75, 3-4: $10.00, 5+ $9.00 Brunnera 'Alexander's Great' forms a larger plant than Brunnera 'Jack Frost', with larger leaves that make an impressive statement in the shade garden. Silvery heart-shaped leaves have green veining and are topped with tiny, sky blue forget-me-not like flowers in spring. It forms a 30" wide clump. (PP#25789) Brunnera 'Jack Frost' Price: $10.75, 3-4: $10.00, 5+ $9.00 Brunnera 'Jack Frost' (PP#13859) is a wonderful plant that really stands out in the shade garden. It has silvery heart-shaped leaves with prominent green veining and is topped with tiny, sky blue forget-me-not like flowers in spring. Cimicifuga 'Atropurpurea' Price: $10.75, 3+ $10.00 Cimicifuga 'Atropurpurea' has bronze tinted leaves in the spring turning green later in the season held on upright, dark purple stems. Fragrant ivory flowers rise up on 4-5' spikes in late summer and early fall for a nice vertical accent in the shade garden.

9 Cimicifuga 'Brunette' Price: $12.75, 3+ $12.00 Cimicifuga 'Brunette' has creamy white flowers opening from pale pink buds on 4' spikes in the fall over dark green to bronze/black foliage. The bottlebrush spikes provide a nice vertical accent in the woodland garden, though give them some bright morning sun for the darkest foliage. The foliage stays compact at about 18" high and the flower spikes will reach 3' high. Cimicifuga 'Chocoholic' Price: $12.75, 3+ $12.00 white. Cimicifuga 'Chocoholic' (PP#24821) has excellent purplish-bronze tinted foliage on upright stems and in late summer and early fall they are topped with 3' spikes of fragrant mauve-pink flowers that age to Cimicifuga 'James Compton' Price: $12.75 Cimicifuga 'James Compton' has bronze tinted foliage that is held on upright stems. In late summer and early fall they are topped with 3-4' spikes of fragrant pinkish-white flowers.

10 Cimicifuga 'Pink Spike' Price: $12.75 Cimicifuga 'Pink Spike' has wonderful bronze tinted foliage in the spring on dark, upright stems. In late summer and early fall they are topped with 4-5' spikes of pink buds that open to pinkish-white flowers. Convallaria 'Rosea' Price: $8.75, 3-4: $8.00, 5+ $7.00 Convallaria 'Rosea', pink lily of the valley, is a dense, fast spreading groundcover with 2 to 3 broad leaves and upright stems of dainty, bellshaped, fragrant pink flowers in spring. They grow 6 to 8" tall; space 15 to 18". Convallaria majalis Price: $4.75, 3-4: $4.00, 5+ $3.00 Convallaria majalis is the white lily of the valley that we all seem to remember from our childhood. It is a dense, fast spreading groundcover with 2 to 3 broad leaves and upright 6 to 8" stems of dainty, bell-shaped, fragrant white flowers in spring. Corydalis lutea Price: $7.75, 3-4: $7.00, 5-9: $6.50, 10+ $6.00 shade. Corydalis lutea has many long blooming, soft yellow flowers above 15" clumps of lacy blue-green foliage. It is hardy, easy to grow, and selfsows freely, making it useful as a ground cover, especially in dry Cyrtomium fortunei Cyrtomium fortunei, known as Fortune's cold hardy holly fern, has 18 to 24", dull gray-green, upright, evergreen fronds with holly-like leaf formations. It is hardy to zone 5 and makes a handsome accent plant in the shade garden, especially in small groups.

It forms a large, 30" mound of green, cut foliage on fleshy stems. This selection has excellent flower color and darker green foliage than the traditional species. Dicentra spectabilis Price: $7.75 Dicentra spectabilis is the old-fashioned bleeding heart. It forms a large, 30" mound of powdery green, cut foliage on fleshy stems and in spring has many long branches of pink heart-shaped flowers. Diplazium pycnocarpon Price: $8.75, 3-4: $8.00, 5+ $7.00 colony. Diplazium pycnocarpon, glade fern, has 24 to 36" arching and upright fronds with smooth, medium green, feathery blade pairs. It is easy to grow and relatively drought tolerant, slow spreading, forming a dense Dryopteris celsa Dryopteris celsa, or log fern, has tall, 36 to 48", upright fronds with narrow, pointed, lightly toothed leaflets that develop a dark green color in rich, acidic soil. It needs consistent moisture for the best height but is adaptable and easy to grow. Dryopteris filix-mas 'Parsley' Dryopteris 'Parsley' has unique crinkled and crested, medium to dark green fronds, forming a tight, upright clump. It is slow growing, ultimately reaching 18 to 24" high and wide.

12 Dryopteris goldiana Dryopteris goldiana is the largest of the Eastern native wood ferns, reaching 4' high in ideal conditions. It has stately, bold fronds that are green with a hint of golden yellow, and it spreads slowly to form a large cluster. It is best in moist woods, preferably in a sheltered, cool location. Dryopteris intermedia Dryopteris intermedia is hardy Eastern native fern with a delicate look. T h e l e a f l e t s a r e l o b e d a n d t o o t h e d, g i v i n g i t a l a c y a p p e a r a n c e t h a t i s quite attractive in the garden. It is easy to grow in moist soil in part to full shade, growing about 24" high and 36" wide. Dryopteris marginalis sturdier. Dryopteris marginalis, marginal wood fern or leather wood fern, has 18 to 30" upright and arching, triangular shaped fronds with bluish-green, lance shaped leaflets. It is similar to the lady fern but is evergreen and Dryopteris remota Dryopteris remota, the remote wood fern, has strong growing, overlapping, upright fronds with delicately cut, narrowly lance shaped blades. It is an easy to grow, fertile hybrid that is semi-evergreen and grows 24 to 36" high. Dryopteris x australis Price: $9.75, 3-4: $9.00, 5-9: $8.00, 10+ $7.00 Dryopteris x australis, or dixie wood fern, has tall, slender, upright, 48 to 60" fronds that have alternating, horizontally held bright green leaflets. It is a beautiful heat and drought tolerant fern that works great as a background or for naturalizing.

13 Dryopteris x complexa 'Robust' Price: $10.75, 3-4: $10.00, 5-9: $9.00, 10+ $8.00 Dryopteris x complexa 'Robust' is a vigorous hybrid fern that forms a large clump of deeply divided, upright and arching, undulating foliage that emerges light green turning dark green, growing 3 to 4' tall. Epimedium 'Frohnleiten' Price: $8.75, 3-4: $8.00, 5+ $7.00 Epimedium 'Frohnleiten' is a slow spreading variety of barrenwort with bright yellow flowers in early spring over bronze-pink foliage that turns dark green in summer and back to bronze in the fall. It is easy to grow so long as the rhizomes are planted and covered with some good soil and it receives occasional moisture. It grows 8 to 12" high and 18 to 24" wide. Epimedium 'Lilafee' Price: $9.75, 3+ $ to 18" wide. Epimedium 'Lilafee' is a shorter, clumping barrenwort with long spurred purple flowers in spring above bronze-red tinted foliage that turns green in summer. The flowers grow 8-12" tall and the clumps spread Epimedium 'Orange Queen' Epimedium 'Orange Queen' (aka 'Orangekönigen') has delightful light copppery-orange flowers that rise up in open clusters ahead of the new spring foliage. This variety is an excellent spreading groundcover with medium green, heart shaped leaves growing 10" tall and 18 to 24" wide. Epimedium 'Pink Elf' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Epimedium 'Pink Elf' (PP#17228) has evergreen, heart shaped foliage and in late spring, pretty little light pink flowers with a darker pink center come up on wiry stems. It flowers 20" high with 12" high foliage that will spread slowly to form a dense clump.

14 Epimedium 'Sulphureum' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Epimedium x versicolor 'Sulphureum' is a semi-clumping barrenwort with short spurred, light yellow flowers that rise up above red tinted, heart shaped leaves in the spring. The flowers grow 12" tall and the clumps spread 18 to 24" wide. Helleborus 'Ballerina Ruffles' Price: $16.75 to dark pink. Helleborus 'Ballerina Ruffles' is a double hellebore in varying shades of pink, many with some light spotting around the center. Each plant flowers in just one color with double petals in colors ranging from light Helleborus 'Blushing Bridesmaid' Price: $16.75 Helleborus 'Blushing Bridesmaid' is a pretty, double flowering plant with 2 to 2 1/2" flowers that tend to be white or light pink with raspberry pink veining and picotee edge. Helleborus 'Cotton Candy' Price: $16.75 Helleborus 'Cotton Candy' has double flowering, fluffy light pink blossoms on pendulous flower stalks in late winter/early spring. These make an excellent addition to the natural woodland garden. Multipetalled flowers bloom in various shades of yellow to creamy yellow, often with a reddish edge.

Blue-green foliage grows 12" high, making a great border plant. Helleborus 'Melody Cream' Price: $12.75 Hellebore 'Melody Cream' is a selection from the Melody strain of wavy edged, single flowering Hellebores with creamy yellow petals and some light spotting near the center of the flowers. Helleborus 'Red Lady' Price: $12.75 Hellebore 'Red Lady' is an attractive smoky mauve-red with yellow anthers. It is a great grower that will form a large clump. Helleborus 'Royal Heritage Strain' Helleborus 'Royal Heritage' is a mixed seed strain with colors ranging from red, white, pink, green, and some plants are occasionally yellow. They are good growers and we select only the most vigorous plants from the field. Each plant flowers just one color. Helleborus 'Sandy Shores' Price: $14.75 Helleborus 'Sandy Shores' is a vigorous, single flowering hellebore with 2 to 3" flowers that are light apricot with a wine-red center and pink on the back of the petals.

Heuchera 'Apple Crisp' Heuchera 'Apple Crisp' (PP#23576) has uniquely crisped foliage forming a very compact clump of white veiled, green foliage with white flowers. It grows 6" high and 11" wide with 11" tall flowers. Heuchera 'Autumn Bride' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Heuchera 'Autumn Bride' is a spectacular, easy to grow coral bell with fuzzy, bright lime green foliage topped and a profusion of giant white flowers in September. It prefers a semi-shaded area with good drainage, growing 15 to 18" high with taller flowers. They grow about 3' tall and wide and need rich, moist soil for best growth. Ligularia 'Dragon's Breath' Price: $10.75 Ligularia 'Dragon's Breath' is a slow growing, dwarf form of Ligularia przewalskii with thicker and more deeply cut leaves, growing 13" tall with 30" flower spikes. Naturally moist to wet soil is needed, so grow at the edge of a stream, bog, or swamp. Ligularia 'The Rocket' Ligularia 'The Rocket' is a stately plant with very tall, 5 to 6' golden yellow flower spikes that rise up high over large, serrated green foliage. This variety needs constantly moist to wet soil for best growth but is spectacular in the right situation. Matteuccia struthiopteris Price: $8.75, 3-4: $8.00, 5+ $7.00 Matteuccia struthiopteris, or ostrich ferns, have large 36 to 60", upright deep green fronds that form a distinct vase shape. They like rich, moist soil for best growth yet are vigorous spreaders under any conditions. Mixed Pulmonaria Price: $8.75 These pulmonaria (lungwort) are mixed seed grown plants that come in an interesting array of foliage patterns from spotted to silvery and variations in between. Flowers will have pink buds and purple to bluish-purple petals.

19 Osmunda regalis Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Osmunda regalis, the royal fern or flowering fern, has 3 to 6' tall fronds with lance-shaped leaflets that resemble the foliage of the locust tree. The spores emerge from the tips of the fertile fronds giving it the appearance of a crown or flowers.
