1 Perennial Plants for the Shade from Hallson Gardens Actaea 'Misty Blue' Price: $12.75 Actaea 'Misty Blue' forms a 2 to 3 foot multi-stemmed clumping mound of soft blue-green foliage that is topped with clusters of white flowers in summer followed by white berries in fall. It is a native plant that thrives in the rich but dry, woodland garden. Adiantum pedatum Adiantum pedatum, the Eastern maidenhair fern, has thin but sturdy, 24 to 30" high wiry black stems holding up feathery, circular fronds that branch outward in a flat, fan-like position with each branch carrying 10 to 20 horizontal leaflets. Aruncus 'Misty Lace' PP#15798 Price: $8.75 Aruncus 'Misty Lace' is a cross between Aruncus aethusifolius x Aruncus dioicus with fine, lacy, astilbe-like foliage topped with large, creamy-white, feathery plumes on dark red stems in early to mid summer. Asplenium scolopendrium Asplenium scolopendrium, or Hart's-tongue fern, has 16" upright and arching, leathery and strap-like, glossy green, evergreen fronds that can grow up to 3" wide. It prefers drier, alkaline soil but is also fairly adaptable and can tolerate damp soils so long as the crowns are set at soil level. Asplenium scolopendrium 'Angustatum' Asplenium scolopendrium 'Angustatum' is a narrow, ruffled form of Hart's tongue fern with 6 to 12" long, glossy green, evergreen fronds with crimped, ruffled edges. It is hardy and very attractive but slow to develop, so may not work in every garden. Syn. Asplenium s. 'Angustifolia'.

Athyrium 'Branford Rambler' Athyrium 'Branford Rambler' is a vigorous, running lady fern that spreads from underground rhizomes. It has upright, dark green fronds growing to 24" with maroon to red central stems. It forms an attractive arching mound, 18" high Athyrium 'Victoriae' Price: $8.75 Athyrium 'Victoriae' is a very attractive lady fern with deep green fronds and criss-crossing pinnae, coming to a point with a crested tip, giving it the common name of the criss-cross lady fern. It forms an upright, arching clump, 18 to 24" high and wide.
8 Athyrium otophorum Athyrium otophorum, the eared lady fern, has 12 to 18" pale green fronds with purple-burgundy stems and attractive maroon crosiers when they emerge. As the season progresses they mature to a dusky gray-green but keep their reddish stems. Cimicifuga 'Atropurpurea' Price: $10.75, 3+ $10.00 Cimicifuga 'Atropurpurea' has bronze tinted leaves in the spring turning green later in the season held on upright, dark purple stems. Fragrant ivory flowers rise up on 4-5' spikes in late summer and early fall for a nice vertical accent in the shade garden.

It is hardy, easy to grow, and selfsows freely, making it useful as a ground cover, especially in dry Cyrtomium fortunei Cyrtomium fortunei, known as Fortune's cold hardy holly fern, has 18 to 24", dull gray-green, upright, evergreen fronds with holly-like leaf formations. It is hardy to zone 5 and makes a handsome accent plant in the shade garden, especially in small groups.

Diplazium pycnocarpon Price: $8.75, 3-4: $8.00, 5+ $7.00 colony. Diplazium pycnocarpon, glade fern, has 24 to 36" arching and upright fronds with smooth, medium green, feathery blade pairs. It is easy to grow and relatively drought tolerant, slow spreading, forming a dense Dryopteris celsa Dryopteris celsa, or log fern, has tall, 36 to 48", upright fronds with narrow, pointed, lightly toothed leaflets that develop a dark green color in rich, acidic soil. It needs consistent moisture for the best height but is adaptable and easy to grow. Dryopteris filix-mas 'Parsley' Dryopteris 'Parsley' has unique crinkled and crested, medium to dark green fronds, forming a tight, upright clump. It is slow growing, ultimately reaching 18 to 24" high and wide.
12 Dryopteris goldiana Dryopteris goldiana is the largest of the Eastern native wood ferns, reaching 4' high in ideal conditions. It has stately, bold fronds that are green with a hint of golden yellow, and it spreads slowly to form a large cluster. It is best in moist woods, preferably in a sheltered, cool location. Dryopteris intermedia Dryopteris intermedia is hardy Eastern native fern with a delicate look. T h e l e a f l e t s a r e l o b e d a n d t o o t h e d, g i v i n g i t a l a c y a p p e a r a n c e t h a t i s quite attractive in the garden. It is easy to grow in moist soil in part to full shade, growing about 24" high and 36" wide. Dryopteris marginalis sturdier. Dryopteris marginalis, marginal wood fern or leather wood fern, has 18 to 30" upright and arching, triangular shaped fronds with bluish-green, lance shaped leaflets. It is similar to the lady fern but is evergreen and Dryopteris remota Dryopteris remota, the remote wood fern, has strong growing, overlapping, upright fronds with delicately cut, narrowly lance shaped blades. It is an easy to grow, fertile hybrid that is semi-evergreen and grows 24 to 36" high. Dryopteris x australis Price: $9.75, 3-4: $9.00, 5-9: $8.00, 10+ $7.00 Dryopteris x australis, or dixie wood fern, has tall, slender, upright, 48 to 60" fronds that have alternating, horizontally held bright green leaflets. It is a beautiful heat and drought tolerant fern that works great as a background or for naturalizing.

It is easy to grow so long as the rhizomes are planted and covered with some good soil and it receives occasional moisture. It grows 8 to 12" high and 18 to 24" wide. This variety is an excellent spreading groundcover with medium green, heart shaped leaves growing 10" tall and 18 to 24" wide. Epimedium 'Pink Elf' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Epimedium 'Pink Elf' (PP#17228) has evergreen, heart shaped foliage and in late spring, pretty little light pink flowers with a darker pink center come up on wiry stems. It flowers 20" high with 12" high foliage that will spread slowly to form a dense clump.
14 Epimedium 'Sulphureum' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Epimedium x versicolor 'Sulphureum' is a semi-clumping barrenwort with short spurred, light yellow flowers that rise up above red tinted, heart shaped leaves in the spring. The flowers grow 12" tall and the clumps spread 18 to 24" wide. Helleborus 'Ballerina Ruffles' Price: $16.75 to dark pink. Helleborus 'Ballerina Ruffles' is a double hellebore in varying shades of pink, many with some light spotting around the center. Helleborus 'Melody Cream' Price: $12.75 Hellebore 'Melody Cream' is a selection from the Melody strain of wavy edged, single flowering Hellebores with creamy yellow petals and some light spotting near the center of the flowers. Helleborus 'Red Lady' Price: $12.75 Hellebore 'Red Lady' is an attractive smoky mauve-red with yellow anthers. It is a great grower that will form a large clump. Helleborus 'Royal Heritage Strain' Helleborus 'Royal Heritage' is a mixed seed strain with colors ranging from red, white, pink, green, and some plants are occasionally yellow. They are good growers and we select only the most vigorous plants from the field. Each plant flowers just one color. Ligularia 'Dragon's Breath' Price: $10.75 Ligularia 'Dragon's Breath' is a slow growing, dwarf form of Ligularia przewalskii with thicker and more deeply cut leaves, growing 13" tall with 30" flower spikes. Naturally moist to wet soil is needed, so grow at the edge of a stream, bog, or swamp. Ligularia 'The Rocket' Ligularia 'The Rocket' is a stately plant with very tall, 5 to 6' golden yellow flower spikes that rise up high over large, serrated green foliage. This variety needs constantly moist to wet soil for best growth but is spectacular in the right situation. Matteuccia struthiopteris Price: $8.75, 3-4: $8.00, 5+ $7.00 Matteuccia struthiopteris, or ostrich ferns, have large 36 to 60", upright deep green fronds that form a distinct vase shape. They like rich, moist soil for best growth yet are vigorous spreaders under any conditions. Mixed Pulmonaria Price: $8.75 These pulmonaria (lungwort) are mixed seed grown plants that come in an interesting array of foliage patterns from spotted to silvery and variations in between. Flowers will have pink buds and purple to bluish-purple petals.

It is a clumping fern that multiplies slowly from the base and it is evergreen, very hardy, drought tolerant, and easy to grow.

It is a clumping fern that multiplies slowly but is also rugged and evergreen, with only some winter dieback in the coldest conditions. Pulmonaria 'Roy Davidson' Pulmonaria 'Roy Davidson' has long and narrow green leaves that are lightly dotted with many small spots. In the spring it is topped with powder blue flowers from pale pink buds. Pulmonaria 'Silver Bouquet' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Pulmonaria 'Silver Bouquet' (PP#20059) has coral pink flowers that age to violet purple in spring over spear shaped, silvery foliage. It has nice large flowers, mildew resistant foliage, and will add great silver contrast to the cool, woodland garden. Sedum ternatum 'Larinem Park' Price: $5.75, 3-4: $5.00, 5+ $4.50 Sedum ternatum 'Larinem Park' is a low growing native woodland groundcover with whorled, medium green, rounded leaves that creep to form a solid mass of foliage. It has white flowers in spring and grows best in the shade. Thelypteris decursive-pinnata Price: $8.75 Thelypteris decursive-pinnata, Japanese beech fern, has 18 to 24" narrow erect, tapering fronds that are a nice bright green, all season long. It is easy to grow and fairly drought tolerant, slow spreading from short, underground rhizomes, forming a dense colony.
21 Tiarella wherryi 'Silverado' Tiarella 'Silverado' has 8" high soft green foliage with prominent green veins. It is topped with many white flower spikes in early spring and has attractive dark foliage in the fall. Tricyrtis 'Dark Beauty' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Tricyrtis 'Dark Beauty' is an upright toad lily with cream colored, dark purple spotted flowers that bloom in branching clusters at the tops of 30" stems in late summer and fall in the woodland garden. Tricyrtis 'Miyazaki' Tricyrtis 'Miyazaki' is an arching, compact toad lily with fall flowering, purple spotted cream flowers. The flowers form at each leaf axil so in September and October the 18 to 24" clumps are covered with these attractive orchid-like blossoms. Tricyrtis 'Samurai' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Tricyrtis 'Samurai' has been the most vigorous variegated toad lily we have grown to date. The wide margined, yellow to cream edged foliage looks great through the summer and in August into the fall each stem is topped with branching, lavender tipped and purple spotted, cream colored flowers. It grows 18" high and prefers well-drained, woodland type soil in open shade.
