November 2018: SBID and BE OPEN announce Designed for Business competition category finalists The Society for British & International Design (SBID) and its partner BE OPEN Think Tank announce the finalists for Designed for Business, its new national competition aimed at final year creative students and graduates across Interior Design, Interior Decoration, Product Design, Fashion and Art & Design. SBID created the competition in a bid to showcase emerging talent in each industry, to promote equal opportunities and to nurture relationships between students and the working world. SBID and BE OPEN were delighted with the enthusiastic response to the competition from both students and creative course leaders at leading universities. Members of the esteemed judging panel remarked that they were impressed by the quality, innovation, social conscience and focus on sustainability present throughout the entries. The awards presentation will take place at the House of Commons on Thursday 29 th November, where category winners will be awarded with 1,000. The overall winner will be awarded with a substantial prize of 30,000, providing the winning student with the tools to pay off their debt, establish a business or create their idea for a commercial venture. A selection of finalists across the categories include: Product Design Masahiko Ito Kingston University BDes (Hons) Product & Furniture Design Saddle Seat is a new type of seating for schools. It is designed to be fun, engaging and playful whilst aiding posture and thus improving concentration amongst students. Masahiko s design allows for efficient oxygen intake and fluid blood circulation helping to avoid the physical and mental healthcare issues associated with poor posture. Jordan Keaney The University of the West of England BDes (Hons) Product Design Jordan aimed to create a hub to draw people together, encouraging social interaction on university campuses, using a combination of lighting and seating. The design of The Bonfire draws people in from a distance, accommodates groups of varying sizes and encourages natural interaction with its organic form. The Bonfire also offers varying degrees of shelter and privacy with protection from the elements.
Interior Decoration Catherine Sinclair Glasgow School of Art BA (Hons) Textile Design Hermine Doublon UAL Central St Martins BA (Hons) Design Ceramics Mhairi Alice Boyle Arts University Bournemouth BA (Hons) Textiles Catherine designed a sustainable collection of knitted textiles for interiors that have a sense of fluidity and surprise, inspired by the idea of building shelter. Hermine s project aims to challenge and open the mind by exploring surface textures in order to redefine the tactile qualities of familiar objects, addressing materiality within a domestic context leading to the creation of a new experience. Mhairi s collection celebrates Scotland s natural beauty to create contemporary, abstract, tactile fabrics suitable for interiors. Catherine interpreted this as a quest for the hidden, secret places within nature and our desire for escape and adventure. The collection was inspired by the textures found in the remote corner of north west Scotland where she lives, contrasted with the urban influences in Glasgow. The project was also an opportunity to explore experimentation and the delicate balance between safety and risk. Interior Design The project invites the user to change the usual, preconceived relationship to a familiar object with the aim to create a collection of high-end handmade ceramics with ergonomic, aesthetic and tactile qualities. Mhairi aimed to translate and recreate oil paintings into luxury, woollen fabrics made from highquality ethical yarns from Scotland to create a body of work which is both refined and technically competent. Mhairi worked with acid dyes which required experimentation due to the unpredictability of the dye and the technique.
Helen Mackenzie Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee BDes (Hons) Interior & Environmental Design Helen created a design for an existing building to accommodate a new drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre, with the overarching aim of restructuring the current system. Helen redesigned an 1850s Baronial style ruin in central Scotland and designed a 50-day rehabilitation system with a series of challenges to build confidence. The layout is designed around a central core, womblike shape to create a safe, nature-inspired environment for the system to flow from and around. Lauren Strong Northumbria University BA (Hons) Interior Design Lauren created a design for Little Buddies, an education centre for children with autism. Materials used throughout the space were specified to meet the needs of the parents and children. Each floor offers different activities with way finding to aid movement through the space. Coloured lights surround the floor to indicate which room you are being led into. Lauren was keen to include a rooftop terrace for children to learn how to plant and grow different types of food. Fashion Christopher Josef Ehrlich Central St Martins BA (Hons) Fashion Design: Menswear Project brief: Christopher s collection originated from his frustration with the current state of the fashion industry. He found that quality clothing is split into two camps: on one hand a traditionalist process that relies on feelings of comfort and nostalgia but is overly dependent on old techniques, thus losing relevance. On the other hand, a form of futurism that makes innovative use of new technologies but is too reliant on the techniques aesthetically, making the clothes cold and alienating. His goal was to find a new way that combines the strength of both. Aaminah Kara University of Salford BA (Hons) Fashion Design Project brief: Aaminah s collection an opportunity to present how she defines herself as a designer, without any barriers or restrictions. The collection was designed for her muse Nanda Schwarz and her target market. The concept was to challenge traditional ways of thinking through an alternative presentation of Amish culture, using print techniques that emerged from Amish quilting and combining contrasting aspects to create a fresh reflection of the community.
Art & Design Emma Mounsey University of Wolverhampton BA (Hons) Applied Arts Emma created a body of sculptural ceramics unifying the techniques and influences she had explored during the previous two years of the course. This was to involve a continuation of handbuilding and slipcasting ceramics, further exploration of wire inclusions and surface decoration as well as more in depth into constructivism and biomorphic abstraction. Another aspect of the project is the exploration of the idea of perfection and how to balance a lifelong search for perfection with the knowledge that it is an elusive concept and ultimately an unattainable goal. Lee Pickering University of Plymouth BA (Hons) Illustration Lee s project explores the social expectations on male identity in modern society, depicting insecurities using print, mixed media and digital mediums for an editorial-style campaign. Lee used research available on male insecurities and investigated how the male image is portrayed in the media. Lee created a series of case studies, photographing, interviewing and drawing models. The aim is to give voice to an important yet under-reported subject. The entries were judged by an esteemed panel from across the creative industries including key representatives from companies including Sebastian Conran Associates, Amazon UK, Christie s Education, John Lewis, Amara, HG Designworks and VitrA, as well as creative educators from a number of the UK s leading universities. SBID founder, Dr Vanessa Brady OBE, says We are delighted to announce the Designed for Business finalists. We were delighted to receive such a high volume of impressive entries, all of which aim to change traditional ways of thinking through design with innovation and social conscience at their heart. We believe that the competition will provide a life changing opportunity for the winning student and hope to encourage current students to develop a business mind throughout their creative education, in order to become the pioneers of the future. BE OPEN founder Elena Baturina comments, I am thoroughly impressed by the calibre of entries and the thinking behind each of our finalists work. The lens of the future generation looks bright and we can see how well they have considered their brief to find solutions that are not only pleasing to the eye, but also take on board values such as sustainability and the environment. BE OPEN is delighted to be involved in celebrating the next generation of young, creative designers and support them as they develop their careers. Notes to Editors: About Designed for Business
Designed for Business is aimed at final year creative students and graduates across Interior Design, Decoration, Fashion, Art & Design. Students were asked to submit their final year projects for a chance to win a prize of 30,000, enabling them to pay off the average cost of student debt or to establish a creative start-up business. In keeping with the aim of global excellence for the next generation, both partners have gathered some of the world s best industry and education experts across five creative sectors - Art, Fashion, Interior Design, Product Design and Interior Decoration as well as University Educators, to assess and shortlist entries. The judging process took place on 18th September with the announcement of official shortlist to be made on 29th October, followed by the awards ceremony on 29th November at the House of Commons. education/designed-for-business/ About SBID (Society of British and International Design) The Society of British and International Design (SBID) is the standard bearer organisation for the Interior Design profession across the UK, Europe and around the world.
