2 IT S FARMHOUSE. BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT. We ve never been one to shy away from a challenge, so when it was suggested the classic farmhouse needed a fresh new look we sprang into action. The modern interpretation of the traditional farmhouse or homestead has now become a topselling style for Plunkett over the last few years. The new modern farmhouse design is all about enjoying volume, space and light; those things that you head to the country for. The traditional red brick design takes a back seat to the fresh white walls, stonework and high-pitched rooflines. There will always be a place in our hearts for traditional country-collection designs such as the Southampton, but designs such as the Colorado are appealing to a new breed of buyers in search of a country retreat. Whether you re heading for a quarter acre or more in the Hills, or you re bringing a bit of the country to the city, it s fair to say that this is a style that plays to the emotions. It s the dream of a rural idyll where we can escape the rat race and find the peace and serenity we crave. Emotion is all very well, we hear you say. A verandah out the back and an old rocking chair and all that, but what about the practical day-to-day demands the modern family places on a home? Is it possible to balance the sentimental with the functional? You bet it is.

These designs still have the purity and simplicity we ve always loved about the classic old homestead, but they re totally in tune with modern Australian living. Light and height: Raking ceilings are the hallmark of many rural-style properties and the Augusta is no exception, with high raking ceilings running the length of the open-plan living area and out to the alfresco. Combined with the highlight windows, the ceilings accentuate the open-plan layout and easy flow from indoors to outdoors. A deep bulkhead helps define the kitchen, which features a long island bench and plenty of storage and workspace. In similar fashion, the raking ceilings and huge gable-end windows help give the Colorado its distinctive shape and volume. They can be added to any of our existing homestead floor plans, giving you even more design options.

11 Street appeal: With its wide frontage, substantial roofline and chunky charcoal-grey window frames, the Colorado looks classically long and low from the outside. But don t be deceived. The raking ceilings and soaring gable-end windows create an explosion of space in both the main living area and the master suite. The Augusta s front elevation gives a great first impression, with charcoal Accoya cladding teamed with clean lines, a wrap-around verandah, white render and a dark grey Colorbond roof. The timber cladding is understated, yet adds warmth and texture. Style and Space: We ve given the Augusta the warmth and character of a country retreat, but combined it with all the sleek open-plan spaces and contemporary features that modern living demands. Everything feels bigger in the Colorado thanks to the extra bit of space in the central passageway which makes it feel like it s connecting the different areas. It exudes a modern vintage feel, with its rustic colours and understated pattern, along with contemporary features such as the sleek gloss-white kitchen, the IT nook, and the built-in dining table that adjoins the kitchen island bench. The additional tablestyle section can be omitted so that you have space to place a traditional table and chairs, turning the living and dining area into more of a freeform space. Views: Living on a lifestyle block is an open invitation to engage with the outdoors. You don t want to just look at it, you want to throw open the doors and let in the breeze and the birdsong. 12 Layout: We ve brought some fresh thinking to our classic homestead layout in the Colorado. Instead of using the living area to separate the master suite from the minor bedrooms, the modern design has the living and entertaining zone on one side of the home, and all bedrooms or quiet space on the other. In the Augusta, the minor bedrooms and second bathroom have been grouped together at the front of the home along with an activity area adjoining the entry hallway. Displayed as a study zone for two, the activity area is a flexible space that has been neatly concealed from the hallway without sacrificing any sense of flow or openness. Contemporary kitchen: Here we have the perfect opportunity to marry traditional home style with all the mod cons and latest in kitchen design. A classic U-shaped kitchen works a treat, but a galley-style layout works just as well, with today s island bench becoming yesterday s kitchen table or butcher s block. In the Augusta, the kitchen cabinetry has been extended into the dining space. It s a modern and practical touch that helps integrate the two spaces.
