4 Existing Structures The existing structures in the piazza include two residential buildings, a Carabinieri Station, the Church of Saint Ignatius, and the Ristorante da Sabatino.

14 Sun Studies Using the basic masses of the piazza, we generated the following sun studies that show what areas of the piazza are shaded or sun-soaked at different parts of the day. The studies were taken every two hours from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM on 26 June 2018.

16 Behavior Mapping Through behavior mapping the piazza, we gained a knowledge about how people move through the space, how people use the space, and how the piazza both supports and discourages certain activities. The following diagrams explore foot and vehicle traffic, "spaces" within the piazza, and noise.

31 Behavior Mapping Conclusions - Circulation is generally straight through the piazza from the Pantheon to the Trevi Fountain and vice versa - Pass-through space dominated by smaller groups of tourists - Extensive car and truck traffic, government vehicles - Church of Saint Ignatius always provides shade - The center of the piazza, in front of the Carabinieri Station is generally empty space and not often in the shade - Activities are limited to simply walking through, visiting the church, or resting on the church's steps - Visitors walk with their heads down, missing the vertical emphasis of the piazza

32 Comparison Piazzas Comparing and contrasting Piazza di Sant'Ignazio to other piazzas is another means of understanding the function of this type of space in Rome. Visiting other piazzas highlights the successes and shortcomings of both Piazza di Sant'Ignazio and the many other piazzas in Rome. Piazza Santa Maria della Liberatrice and Piazza Testaccio serve as comparison locations.

33 Piazza Santa Maria della Liberatrice General Observations - Not a tourist destination - Large in size - Ample shade from surrounding trees - Child and adult users - Many dogs - Use of every area in the space - Ample seating - Children's park - Sit, stay, and play style - Surrounding buildings do not effect the piazza - Wide green spaces - Clean, very little trash

35 Comparisons and Differences to Piazza di Sant'Ignazio At first glance, Piazza di Sant'Ignazio and Piazza Santa Maria dell Liberatrice have nothing in common. But upon closer analysis, both piazzas have ample sources of shade with a consistent breeze. Both piazzas have steps or step-like structures for seating. By contrast, Piazza Santa Maria dell Liberatrice is largely characterized by the amount of people who stay in the space, while Piazza di Sant'Ignazio is a passthrough space. Santa Maria has the benefit of natural shading via trees and a large area, while Ignazio has very little greenery and space.

38 Comparisons and Differences to Piazza di Sant'Ignazio At first glance, Piazza di Sant'Ignazio and Piazza Testaccio have nothing in common. But upon closer analysis, both piazzas have ample sources of shade with a consistent breeze. Seating in both of these piazzas is located on the edge of the space facing into the area. Piazza Testaccio boasts ample space for a variety of acitivites, encouraging visitors to stay and play, while Piazza di Sant'Ignazio is a transition space between points of intrest. Testaccio has a large water source in its center, while the center of Sant'Ignazio is empty. Sant'Ignazio has clear vertical emphasis, while Testaccio can be viewed and enjoyed at eye level.
