As a leader and specialist in the design, manufacture and supply of high quality products for hard landscaping, transport and building schemes, we have expanded both through organic growth and by acquisition. Through this growth and the incorporation of the product and expertise it includes, we have in our portfolio many renowned and long-proven brands such as Trief and Kassel specialist kerbs - in fact Brett is now one of the leading safety kerb manufacturers in Europe. These well established and successful products are complemented by an innovative and comprehensive design service and technical support. 11 SERVICE Few areas of construction have as much published guidance and legislation covering them as the future of our urban landscapes. As a leader in hard landscaping solutions, it is our responsibility to provide advice to our clients, guiding them through the relevant legislation in order to achieve the optimum hard landscaped environment. This can range from master planning and meeting pre-tender conditions, through to complying with statutory requirements and provision of integrated system solutions. Brett continually demonstrates that good advice, good design and good products go together to provide the very best hard landscaping solution. Integrated design, specification, ordering and delivery packages can be provided for projects of all sizes - furthermore, our advice continues to be available on maintenance, refurbishment and cleaning, long after the project finishes. So the Brett Landscaping Design Service starts when you pick up the phone or us. but never actually stops. SPECIALIST KERBS Drawing on the benefits of our industry-leading range of specialist kerbs, the Design Service can provide advice or bespoke designs for bus stations and depots, bus stops, traffic management and calming measures as well as protected pedestrian access. BESPOKE To meet the demands of challenging sites or specific requirements that cannot be met with the range of standard products, Brett has developed the capacity to design and produce bespoke products. SUDS Brett is a leading provider of permeable paving for sustainable drainage solutions. The Design Service is able to design bespoke solutions and specify appropriate products that meet the necessary legal requirements and conform to best practice. Measuring Up is Brett s own manufacturing, environmental and sustainability auditing system, specifically developed to help us achieve these goals. This on-going monthly reporting on our operating activities is closely monitored and assessed to help us reduce resource consumption, conserve energy, enhance and protect the environment, develop our people and be a better neighbour. Incremental month-on-month improvements based on this detailed reporting system adds up to significant on-going advances in our business. QUALITY, SAFETY, HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS An internally developed, fully integrated management system QHEST, (Quality, Health, Environment, Safety Together) has been running across the Brett business, starting in This enables us to benchmark and continually improve our operational efficiency. The ongoing development of the QHEST integrated management system will ensure that Brett remains at the forefront of system design and compliance. The Group s activities are certified through BSI, QSRMC or SIRA Certification Services. Since 2002, approximately 26% of our total workforce have attained recognised qualifications through Brett. These include SHE NVQ in Extractive Industries, accreditations and other NVQs in work related subjects, as well as professional qualifications in the fields of Health, Safety and the Environment through IOSH, NEBOSH and IEMA. HEALTH AND SAFETY Our Behavioural Safety programme, Alive and Well was introduced in Comprehensive training and regular employee engagement identifies both good practice and areas of improvement for everyone. Alive and Well feedback combines with Near Miss Reporting to ensure all actions are captured. Since the introduction of Alive and Well, our rate of reportable accidents has fallen by around 50% - a great achievement and one kept under constant review for future improvement. ETHICAL TRADING Some of our products are sourced from outside the UK. In order to ensure ethical trading conditions, we have become an active member of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI). We are progressively adopting the ETI Base Code which provides a moral code for the treatment of workers across the world. We require all of our UK suppliers to be aware of and to apply the ETI Base Code to their own suppliers. INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP Brett people are proactive in representing both the industry s and the local area s interests through active involvement in national and local associations and organisations. These include the MPA, (formerly the Quarry Products Association, the BCA and The Concrete Centre), The British Ready-Mix Concrete Association, the QSRMC (Quality Scheme for Ready Mixed Concrete) and the British Precast Concrete Federation, Interpave and BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries). CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY Given the background of Brett as an independently owned business based on relationships, we have a strong commitment to corporate responsibilities. 16 For Brett, success and environmental performance go hand in hand. All of our sites quarries, concrete plants, manufacturing and processing plants, wharves and offices are required to consider, measure and minimise their impact on the environment. 16

17 ENVIRONMENT The sensitive way in which we plan, manage and work our assets consistently receives positive recognition and acclaim, as does our consideration of our neighbours. Our Measuring Up programme extends across land management and bio-diversity enabling us to take definite and positive steps toward minimising our impact on our surroundings. QUARRY RESTORATION Our restoration of quarries not only wins us prestigious local and national awards, but more importantly, it enhances the communities in which we operate. We have restored the Surrey Church Lammas quarry to a wildlife habitat and lake, built with disabled access as its primary focus. In Kent, we have turned a part of Conningbrook Quarry into a superb fishing lake, built the internationally acclaimed Julie Rose Stadium next to it and created a lake used by sailing and rowing clubs at Westbere. To date, Brett has won 39 awards in 33 years for the quality of our restoration and aftercare of quarries alone, including the prestigious Cooper Heyman Cup on six occasions - on two consecutive occasions in 2004 and In 2009, we were delighted to win the Best of the Best award for excellence in restoration, awarded by the Mineral Products Association for the restoration work at Laleham Quarry in Surrey, which resulted in 100 acres of high quality agricultural land. THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT We provide core funding for the Kentish Stour Countryside Project which protects and enhances the natural surroundings and biodiversity of the environment right along the River Stour which crosses the South East of England. We are also involved in numerous conservation activities, such as supporting Wildlife Trusts and protecting the habitat of rare bird species in our Charing quarry. The Community Liaison Award for 2009 was awarded to Brett for work carried out at our Cliffe site. TRANSPORT Where possible, Brett uses alternatives to road transport to minimise environmental impact. All aggregates used in the manufacture of our concrete block paving at Cliffe, for instance, are delivered entirely by water. Overall, our landscaping and building products plants receive raw materials via the following means: 54% water, 26% road and 20% rail. This reduces our impact on the environment by both reducing road congestion and lowering carbon emissions. The Brett Love Your Landscape initiative reflects our strong corporate social responsibility values and our ongoing programme of environmental and social responsibilities. The initiative includes donations of building materials and other contributions to help make landscapes more enjoyable and more accessible for the public. Projects which the initiative will support include; open spaces and environments which improve health and wellbeing, educational projects at schools and colleges, spaces which are at the heart of the local community, social housing and regeneration projects, heritage and monuments as well as environmental and sustainability projects. 19 SUSTAINABILITY Our products are designed and manufactured to enhance the built environment and the lives of the people who use it. It is therefore essential that Brett ensures that these products and our operations are themselves sustainable. We constantly strive to minimise our impact on the environment by minimising our energy usage and maximising the recyclability of our materials, so that they have the minimum impact on the environment both now and in the future. Restored Brett Quarry, Chilham, Kent SPECIFIC SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENTS In 2008, Brett was a lead signatory to the UK Concrete Industries Sustainable Construction Strategy. This initiative will provide industry-wide commitment to the following: Producing an annual sustainability Performance Report for the UK concrete industry Agreeing set performance targets for the industry Working to reduce CO 2 emissions from the sector Playing a leading role in meeting the challenges of sustainable construction Providing key industry data for life cycle analysis modelling Demonstrating the benefits of concrete products within the built environment RECYCLED MATERIALS We have established a set of Key Performance Indicators consistent with those of our Trade Associations. These include measurement of our water and energy consumption, as well as other critical sustainable criteria which are regularly monitored under our on-going Measuring Up programme. Brett waste materials are routinely re-used in both our own as well as in other industries to make innovative new products. For example, our 100% recycled Type 1 sub-base has been used on many major contracts. Increasingly, we are also working to reduce our packaging, leading us to design out palletisation wherever possible. Where pallets are required, we collect and re-use wherever possible. BRITISH PRE-CAST CONCRETE FEDERATION Brett is a signatory to the BPCF sustainability charter, which provides member companies with a way of demonstrating that they are going beyond legislation and undertaking voluntary actions to improve their performance on a range of sustainability issues. The key value of the Charter is to guide companies towards focusing on the issues that have the greatest impacts on economic viability, social progress and environmental performance in the precast sector. A or A+ GREEN GUIDE RATINGS The BRE Green Guide to Specification provides independent assessment and endorsement of the low environmental impact of precast concrete paving as manufactured by Brett Landscaping.
