Pre-concept note DRAFT only for review and development On Top Form Ellerslie, Ōrākei Community, organics, sport and wellness, art and images, horses and racing Vision The On Top Form theme melds together strong associations of place with the horse (racecourse), organic foods, and the community aspects of Ellerslie. Stroll around gazing upon the heritage buildings that give Ellerslie its Village feel, go shopping at one of the organic stores. Maybe pick up a picnic basket at one of them and explore the green spaces of Ellerslie and the Paptuanuku ki Taurangi organic garden. Or enjoy the range of cafés, restaurants, and specialized food outlets through restaurant hopping (one culinary dish and drink at each place). The trail will improve linkages between parks and walkways, cultural and heritage attractions, and local shopping areas, which will offer a diverse experience that moves beyond mere shopping. Furthermore the trail will create stronger local networks of collaboration. Overall this will generate a distinctive sense of place for visitors and locals alike. Points of interest include:! Auckland Racing Club! Ellerslie Event Centre! Ellerslie town centre and retail! Organic Shops! Various cafés, restaurants, and specialized food outlets! Papatuanuku ki Taurangi Organic Community Garden! Ellerslie Racecourse Gardens
! The Stables Theatre, Ellerslie Theatrical Society! Sports facilities and parks! Ellerslie Domain! Derby Downs Domain! Michaels Ave Reserve! Lawry Reserve (For a detailed description of the points of interest see appendix) Goals & objectives! Stimulate local engagement in the development of the Go Green in The Organic Village trail, which will create stronger local networks of collaboration, leading to an increased understanding of the visitor economy and enhanced business performance.! Encourage the use of local resources in a way that enhances economic opportunities and improves business and community well- being in a sustainable way.! Collect and share local information and stories, by placing a focus on the cultural and historical significance of the natural and built environment, which can create a sense of place that will appeal to the visitor and give them a reason to slow down, stay longer and spend more money once they arrive.! Protect and promote cultural and natural heritage, by conserving local history, heritage landmarks and the natural environment by passing on knowledge to younger generations, local residents, and (international) visitors. Partners (to be discussed?)! key individuals,! interested parties and groups (business and community) Audience and target market The trail will target groups ranging from families, to age groups 24+, foodies, and people interested in organic food. It does so by including different elements along the trail such as organic shopping, dining, enjoyment of green spaces and heritage attractions. The trail is constructed not only to attract international visitors, but also domestic visitors which includes residents from other parts of Auckland. Additionally, an increased understanding of the natural and cultural gems that are present in Ellerslie will provide residents with the opportunity to maintain and build a strong sense of local identity and pride in once own neighborhood. Governance/ coordination/ leadership (to be discussed?)
! OLB! ATEED! NZTRI/AUT! Visitor Strategy Group Guiding values & principles, worldview, and interpretation The development of this particular trail, although small in scale, adds on to a wider context. First of all it is guided by two key values (also recognized by the New Zealand Tourism Strategy). - Kaitiakitanga, which refers to guardianship and sustainable management of natural and built resources of collective benefit to current and future generations. - Manaakitanga, which means a generous spirit of sharing exceptional hospitality, knowledge and beliefs, on the basis of mutual respect between host and visitor. The trail is focused on preserving and sharing cultural and natural heritage, to provide benefits to hosts and visitors alike. Additionally the trail can potentially link to the 5+ A Day is a Charitable Trust that encourages all Kiwis to eat five or more servings of colourful, fresh fruit and vegetables every day for good health. The organic shops could provide the 5+ A Day, or restaurant and bar hopping could incorporate this idea. Furthermore there are 5+ green spaces that can be visited and 5+ historical buildings that can be gazed upon. Public meetings and local engagement (to be discussed) Benefits and appeal:! To the people of Ōrākei Local Board area and Tāmaki Makaurau! To iwi! To the region/ locals in Tāmaki Drive, Remuera and Ellerslie! To the Visitor (international, domestic, intra- regional and local)! To local businesses (shops, restaurants, cafes, tour operators, rentals etc.)! To local organizations! To Auckland Transport! To other visitor attractions in the area The host community experience The trail will provide an opportunity for local residents to get to know the organic and green side of their own community and explore areas they would otherwise not have gone to. An increased understanding of the natural and cultural gems that are present helps to maintain and build a strong sense of local identity and pride in once own neighborhood. This leads to
more appreciation of the natural and built environment and commitment to preserving those features within Ellerslie. By building on the organic and green side of Ellerslie it can attract more business to the area. Aucklanders, domestic and international visitors will find that there is more to the area than just another shopping street. Overall the trail can assist in making Ellerslie a more well- known suburb with a strong footing on the visitor map of Auckland. The visitor experience The Trail will offer a variety of experiences, which users can combine and tailor to their own interests and circumstances depending on season, time available, fitness, interests and the nature of group on the outing. Trail followers can pick and choose length of route, mode of transport, refreshment stops, shopping opportunities, deeper discoveries, and will be able to revisit the trail, taking a different approach next time, and combining different activities. Insights into history, nature and local attractions and services will be available on- site, on- line and in print. The information provided will highlight places and activities which locals love, delivered in user friendly ways that reflect the generous spirit and pride of residents old and new. Activities associated with the trail! Shopping! Walking! Cycling! Picnicking! Dining! Sight seeing! Geocaching (e.g.) treasure hunt for kids Digital resources! Google maps! Image library! podcasts! videos Phases of development (this doc will focus on Phase 1) (to be discussed) Infrastructure! On site information panels
! Directional/wayfinding signage (with logo?) possibly also pavement markers/footprints! Web presence including links to trails, downloadable maps, podcasts, and videos. Marketing! Launch activities, such as a treasure hunt, neighbourhood picnic, food events such as culinary tasting, café hopping, music in the parks, workshops etc.! Regular local events e.g. monthly themed guided walking tours to provide personal insights from locals? Appendix Points of interest Go Green in the Organic Village trail Organic Shops Ceres Wholefoods began trading in 1984, becoming New Zealand s first organic store. Today it continues to provide an ever expanding range of organic and natural products to customers far and wide. Ellerslie Meats specializes in organic beef, lamb, chicken, rabbit, Venison, Smoked Bacon & Ham. Furthermore they offer award winning gluten free handmade organic sausages. Paris - Berlin Organic Bakery - Here you will find a selection of traditional German sourdoughs, French crusty baguettes, wheat free sourdoughs, and seeded loaves. We have south- German pretzels and pretzel breads, naturally leavened, yeast-, dairy-, and gluten- free bread. Various cafés, restaurants, and specialized food outlets Papatuanuku ki Taurangi Organic Garden Food trail, hopping from one culinary dish and/or drink to the next. ( Dependent on the willingness from local business owners to set this up as regular event) Papatuanuku ki Taurangi (Earth Promise) is an initiative of Nga Whaea Atawhai ó Aotearoa Sisters of Mercy New Zealand. The garden is a place for teaching and learning as well as providing food. It is based on permaculture and organic principles, and is designed as a place of beauty. Hospitality is core and whoever comes is welcome. Visitors will see vegetable beds, fruit trees, and roses. It is
a lively and beautiful place. Ellerslie Racecourse Gardens Ellerslie Domain Derby Downs Domain Michaels Ave Reserve Lawry Reserve Bridge of Memories Anglican Church - Christ Church Former Ellerslie Post Office Former Municipal Offices Arborfield Ellerslie War Memorial Hall Unclear if you can enter this garden as a walk in visitor Ellerslie Domain is centrally located in Ellerslie Borough within walking distance of the Ellerslie shopping centre. The only access to the domain is from Main Highway. The majority of the land is relatively flat in two levels with terracing between. The north eastern corner rises sharply in a steep bank. Most of the domain is grassed with a scattering of trees along the western boundary including three totara and an oak in the north eastern corner. Local green open space with path providing street to street access. The reserve is a much loved center of recreation, sport and fitness of the area. For almost 20 years Michaels Ave reserve has been a multi- purpose public space, meeting the needs of everyone, from soccer players to preschoolers, dog walkers to native wildlife breeding in the restored wetland. Local green open space. Has Ellerslie Play Centre and Girl Guides Hall located on site. (Visit needed for further description) The Bridge of Memories was part of the work done in 2006 to revitalize the Ellerslie Town Centre. The memory corner displays mosaics commemorating the history of Ellerslie. One can find amongst others mosaics of historical places in the village, the race course, and Robert Graham s Ellerslie Gardens. Christ Church 1883, a wooden gothic building in Ladies Mile. Its most significant feature is a full set of windows gifted to the congregation by the English firm of Clayton and Bell. The post office was designed in 1909 by John Campbell. He modelled the building on the post offices in Mount Eden and Kingsland. The post office operated here until the privatisation of New Zealand Post in the late 1980s. It is now home to the Union Post Brew Bar. The Ellerslie Town District purchased the land in 1926 for the construction of its municipal buildings. The Ellerslie Borough Council was based in these offices until it merged with Auckland City in This two- story wooden Italianate house was the residence of Lieut. Col Charles Dawson (18th Royal IrishRegiment), Chairman of the Mount Wellington Road Board and Master of the Pakuranga Hunt. This building was constructed 1989 after fundraising by local groups and is used as a centre for performing arts. The Ellerslie servicemen who were killed or wounded in World War I and World War II are recognised and honoured in the War Memorial Hall.
