The summer of 2014 will be remembered for being as mild as the winter was harsh, but I don't think anyone will complain about the mild summer weather. The DC Branch continues to be very active and we have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming months. First, looking back; Adam Newhart and I represented the DC Branch at PLANET s Day of Renewal and Remembrance at Arlington National Cemetery on July 28 th. We were there with several other PGMS members from around the country, including National PGMS President Walt Bonvell (Xavier University) and President-Elect John Burns (University of Texas), a couple of really great guys. The weather was amazing and it was a great volunteer opportunity to give something back to those who have sacrificed so much for our Country. Arlington National Cemetery is a beautiful site and it is very well maintained by the dedicated staff that cares for it on a daily basis. 2 President s Message, continued President s Message, continued Olney Gardens Wholesale hosted and sponsored the August 7 th DC Branch meeting at their facility in Silver Spring, MD. John and Donna Rich and Bill Harris provided us with information about their operation and tours of the nursery, we can t thank them enough. The meeting was very well attended, with 40 members and guests in attendance. Mark Nettleship and Kurt Nilsson updated us on the progress being made by the Membership Committee and they are coming up with some really good ideas for promoting the PGMS and the DC Branch. Mark Scafide, City of Gaithersburg, provided chairs and tables for the event, which was much appreciated. Amanda Laudwein not only provided the drinks, but she also gave us an update on MANTS Looking ahead, we have another fantastic program planned for the September 4 th Branch meeting. The September meeting will be hosted by Ruppert Nurseries facility in Laytonsville, MD, there will be tours and demonstrations showing some of the latest techniques in tree farming, as well as moving trees. The meeting will be sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts. Please RSVP and don t miss this one! The DC Branch will again take the lead on seeing that the PGMS is well represented at MANTS in 2015 and we expect some excellent support from National in 2015 as well. Be sure to sign up for a spot at the booth when the signup sheet is sent around. The DC Branch Family Picnic is scheduled for Sunday, September 14 th at the Rojas farm in Poolesville, MD. Look for more information soon and please be sure to mark your calendar for this day of family fun and food, and bring the kids! DATE: Sunday, September 14, 2014 TIME: 1:00 5:00 pm PLACE: Marie Rojas Farm Beallsville Rd Beallsville, MD DIRECTIONS: The farm is located just outside of Poolesville, (Western Montgomery County) Maryland, on Rt 109 (Beallsville Rd) halfway between Rts. 28 & 107 (Whites Ferry Road). From Rockville, take Rt 28 all the way out to Beallsville. At the traffic light in Beallsville, turn LEFT onto Rt 109. Go about 1 mile and the farm is on your RIGHT. From the beltway, take River Rd exit toward Potomac. Continue through Potomac and stay on River Rd all the way until it dead-ends at a stop sign. Turn LEFT (you ll still be on River Rd) and go about 1 mile. Turn RIGHT onto Partnership Rd. Continue on Partnership until you get to a stop sign. Turn LEFT at the stop onto Whites Ferry Rd (Rte 107). Continue to the town of Poolesville. When you come to a 4-way stop, turn RIGHT onto Beallsville Rd (Rte 109). Go about 1.5 miles and the farm is on your LEFT. Continue slowly down the gravel drive until it dead ends at the farm. Park by the big red barn.
