43 Superstructure Shape and Appearance DRAFT Proposed Specification: Main Span Portion of the I-90 Viaduct Shall Consist of Haunched Girders Reflects Design Principle: New bridge should be consistent with shape of existing bridges yet not imitative.

44 Form, Rhythm and Continuity DRAFT Proposed Specifications: Abrupt girder depth changes only at end piers of main viaduct. Consistent material type (steel or concrete) and superstructure shape (I-girder or box) for entire length of bridge. Reflects Design Principle: Design should be consistent and coherent across entire valley, and speak with single design vocabulary

45 Aesthetic Lighting DRAFT Proposed Specifications: Design Build Teams will be required to submit an aesthetic lighting scheme for entire main viaduct bridge Plan shall be comparable to the lighting of the other downtown Cleveland bridges. Reflects Design Principle: Design should incorporate opportunities for aesthetic lighting in keeping with the lighting schemes common to existing bridges in the valley

46 Attention to Detailed Aesthetics DRAFT Proposed Specifications: No stiffeners on the outside of the fascia girders. No horizontal drainage pipes below the bottom plane of the superstructure. Drainage systems required to match color of adjacent concrete/steel bridge elements. Reflects Design Principle: Treat side, under and above deck views with comparable effort to global views

47 Pier Configurations DRAFT Proposed Specification: Single box superstructures single stem columns Twin box superstructures twin columns in line with box girders Multiple girder superstructures no more than two columns Reflects Design Principles:..placement of bridge supports should be conducive to positive and beneficial future land use adjacent to underside Consideration of people environment adjacent to and under bridge is important

48 Touch down points and neighborhood impacts DRAFT Proposed Specifications: In this case, the Request for Proposal (instructions to bidders) will include prescriptive drawings requiring design elements being discussed for Gateway and Tremont areas Reflects Design Principle: The design should be sensitive to the scale and appearance of the neighborhoods where it touches down and should respect the special character of Tremont and Gateway
