1 Aldrich Blowdown Separators & Cooling Manifolds ASME Section VIII U Stamped & National Board Registered Construction: Aldrich blowdown separators are constructed of 3/8 thick carbon steel shell and 3/8 thick 2:1 convex heads. All standard sizes are stamped at 150 MAWP. Custom tank sizes and higher working pressures are available upon request. Cooling Package: Aldrich after cooler systems include bimetal thermometer, self-actuating cooling valve, wye strainer, check valve and manifold. Manifold size must match drain size of selected blowdown separator. 3 Aldrich Blowdown Separator & Cooling Manifold Installation & Maintenance Manual Warning: It is important to inspect the unit for any possible damage it may have endured during shipping. Make sure sealing surfaces of flanges, internal, and external NPT threaded connections are free of dings and dents. Check all connections for leaks upon completion of installation. Verify the MAWP pressure of the Blowdown Separator is equal to or greater than that of the boiler to which it is connected prior to installation. Important: Always read and understand local codes prior to installation of new mechanical equipment. Local codes prevail over any recommendations or rules outlined within this manual.

4 1. Setting the Unit: Aldrich Blowdown separators should be securely mounted to a concrete floor or slab using the holes provided in the support stand. Optional wall mounting brackets may be used if purchased with the unit and provided by Aldrich Company. 2. Inlet Connection: The inlet size of the blow down separator shall match the bottom blow down valve size of the boiler to which it is connected. Piping shall be full size from the blowdown valve to the inlet of the separator. LWCO blowdown and surface blowdown piping shall be full size of the outlet (ref diagram). 3. Vent Connection: Run vent piping full size and keep as short as possible to reduce back pressure. Vent line should be terminated at a safe location to the public. Follow local codes. 4. Drain Piping: Run drain piping full size of drain connection on the Separator if piping is sealed. It is also acceptable to terminate cooling package above a floor drain permitting the floor drain is equal to or larger in diameter than that of the drain connection. 5. Aldrich Cooling: Systems are sized based on 50 F incoming water temperature at 40 psi. It is recommended to increase the pipe feeding the cooling line by one pipe size to ensure plenty of cooling water is available. It is important to monitor the provided strainer and keep it clean. Clogged strainers will reduce water flow and inherently reduce cooling capacities. 6. Care Inspection: Aldrich Blowdown Separators have stainless steel wear plates to reduce erosion at inlet to the separator. The units are self draining and drying. With normal use these separators will last many years. Inspect the unit for build of solids, washout as necessary. Keep outside free of corrosive residues and surface rust.

5 Aldrich standard cooling packages are designed for 15 psi low pressure applications. Refer to the chart below or consult factory for higher pressure cooling packages.
