Before starting Please check that the following documents have been supplied with the unit: - Installation instructions (this manual) - Operating instructions for CTS 600 controls - Wiring diagram Should you have any questions on how to operate the system, contact your nearest Nilan dealer, who you can find at VP 18-10P is a heat recovery ventilation system with a capacity of up to 330m 3 /h at 100Pa external counter pressure. The energy of the exhaust air is transferred via a heat pump to a 180L hot water tank as first priority and to the inlet air as second priority. The system can be equipped with G4 duct filter. Other optional extras are also available, including hygrostat and pollen filter unit. The system is operated via CTS 600 controls offering a wide range of functions, including menubased operation, weekly programming, timed filter alarm, fan speed adjustment, etc. The CTS 600 controls are described in a separate manual supplied together with the system. For details of spare parts and accessories, see page 24. VP 18-10P is supplied in a white Aluzink cabinet, fully tested and ready to operate. Installation and start-up must only be performed by a qualified electrician. Subject to alterations Page 3 of 24

Electrical connection All wiring (power supply, safety circuit breaker, etc.) must only be fitted by a qualified electrician. The system must be connected in accordance with the accompanying wiring diagram. The system is supplied with a 1m test cable for the CTS 600 control panel. The control panel must be connected to the CTS 600 controls using twisted pair cable type 2x2x0.25mm 2 (max. length 50m). The CTS 600 control panel should be installed in a dry, frost-free location. A temperature sensor built into the control panel prevents further cooling of the building should the primary heating system fail by switching the ventilation system off if control panel temperature falls below a preset level. (The default setting is 10 C, but any temperature between 1 C and 20 C can be set.) Figure 1: CTS 600 control panel Subject to alterations Page 4 of 24

ULN V~T1T1230V~230V~UserselectOverheathermostatTank-sensorTopTank-sensorBotom VP 18-10P installation When installing the unit, it is important to take future service and maintenance into account. There should be a minimum clearance of 600mm in front of the unit, measured from the VP 18-10P front panel. Individual connectors have been marked out at the factory to facilitate installation. Please note the attached labels. The connectors should be connected to the duct system using flexible adapters (flex tube, soundproofed flex tube or similar). The unit must be installed and levelled on a firm, vibration-free surface. There should be at least 30mm clearance to walls or other permanent installations. Although the unit itself is practically noise and vibration free, care must be taken to prevent any vibration from being propagated to adjoining parts of the building. It is important that the condensation outlet of the VP 18-10P be connected to a drain. The unit is supplied complete with water trap. The outlet should be led frost-free with steady decline to the nearest drain. The safety valve overflow must also be led to a drain. If VP 18-10P is enclosed by any covering, it must be possible to remove the covering easily. Figure 2: Sketch of VP 18-10P Subject to alterations Page 5 of 24

Condensation outlet/water trap VP 18-10P is supplied with 20mm condensation outlet (PVC, GF fittings). The unit is also equipped with built-in water trap. The condensation outlet must be led frost-free with a steady decline of at least 1cm/m to the nearest drain. The safety valve overflow must also be led to a drain. In order to prevent ice formation, it may be necessary to equip the condensation outlet with a heating cable where frost is possible (see Accessories/spare parts page 26.) Protecting the condensation outlet from frost is the responsibility of the fitter. Subject to alterations Page 6 of 24

Approx. 80cm Water connection In order to prevent ice formation, it may be necessary to equip the condensation outlet with a heating cable where frost is possible (see Accessories/spare parts, page 26.) Protecting the condensation outlet from frost is the responsibility of the fitter. The inner tank surface is enamelled and the tank is equipped with a sacrificial anode. All connectors have 3/4 threads, with the exception of the anode access which is a 3/4 sleeve. All water pipes are connected to the bottom of the unit, see figure 2 on page 5. If required, hot water circulation can be established by fitting a non-return valve to the recirculation connector of the tank after inserting a 80cm long circulation pipe (optional accessory) into the tank. See figure 3 below. If hot water circulation is not required, the connector and fitted blanking plug should be left untouched. Hot water circulation may result in considerable heat loss within the piping system. A large proportion of heat pump output may therefore be lost. To prevent heat loss, circulation and hot water pipes must be insulated with at least 30mm of mineral wool or other type of pipe insulating material. 8 Duct connection Ducting and fittings with rubber seals of tightness class B are recommended. It is also advisable that all duct connections to VP 18-10P be made with approx. 1m of soundproofed flex tube in order to dampen sound emission. Ducting should be cut to length using a hacksaw or angle grinder and laid in accordance with the design drawing. Ducting is usually either attached to rafter feet using perforated strip or suspended in fitting strip. Avoid pinching the ducting in any way and any unnecessary bends. The ducting must be insulated. Sometimes, standard loft insulation can be used for the purpose. All ducting should be insulated with 100mm mineral wool to prevent heat loss and condensation. Such insulation requirements also apply to soundproofed flex tubing. It is recommended that two layers of 50 mm insulating material be used. If ducting is installed in an unheated room, it is inadvisable to switch the system off for prolonged periods as air from heated rooms will rise into the ducting and condensate, thus possibly causing moisture problems. Loft insulation material Ducting Granulate The discharge duct leads the exhaust air (from which the system has recovered the energy it contained) to the outside through the roof or outer wall. It is important that the roof stack or wall grille has at least the same area as the duct immediately ahead of the stack or grille. Any contraction will cause unnecessary pressure drop, which may reduce ventilation capacity. Holes for inlet and exhaust valves should be cut to fit the frame of the valve concerned. Secure the valve frame in position using screws and then attach the valve. Where the valves should be positioned depends on room design and use. It is, for example, inadvisable to install inlet valves immediately above where people usually sit as inlet air may sometimes be perceived as a draught. Subject to alterations Page 8 of 24

Start-up and configuration of CTS 600 controls Startup Once all connections have been checked, check that the tank is full of water. To do so, open the hot water tap. Open ceiling valves, ensuring that valve cone is level with front edge. Subject to alterations Page 9 of 24

Fault finding If problems arise during operation, please check the following before calling the service centre. Check whether the alarm LED on the front of the CTS 600 control panel is flashing. If so, investigate the cause of the alarm and remedy the fault. If necessary, contact your local service centre. For details of alarms and how to reset them, please refer to the operating instructions for the CTS 600 controls. - VP 18-10P is operating but with reduced output. Check that sufficient air is being supplied to VP 18-10P. Check filters for excessive dirt accumulation. Check that valves are sufficiently open. In 98% of cases, the fault is caused by clogged filters. If necessary, increase ventilation step. Any dampers to the open air should be shut at outdoor temperatures lower than 6 C. - VP 18-10P is operating but there is no hot water. Check whether the tank has been emptied of hot water. If the system is equipped with a circulation pump but the circulation circuit has not been insulated, considerable heat loss may result, significantly reducing VP 18-10P capacity. Has the required water temperature (T12) been set correctly in the CTS controls? Usually, water temperature should be set to between 45 and 55 C. Please refer to the CTS 600 operating instructions for details on checking and setting water temperature. If the Air exchange menu is set to COMFORT it is necessary that the temperature of the supplementary electrical heating element is set to minimum 50 C. Is the air supplied too cold or the quantity supplied too low? Check filters and valves. Check whether duct insulation is sufficient and complete. - VP 18-10P is not operating. Check whether a fuse has blown. Check whether the hot water safety thermostat (D in figure 2 on page 5) has cut out. If it has, press the button and the thermostat will cut in again once the water temperature has dropped C. If the thermostat continues to cut out, contact your local service centre. Subject to alterations Page 21 of 24

Maintenance Every 3 months: - Clean T-filter and replace when necessary. Usually, the filter should be replaced once a year. The filter alarm of the CTS 600 controls can be used to keep track of filter service intervals. For further details, please refer to the CTS 600 operating instructions. At least once a year: - Check the sacrificial anode (see figure 3 on page 7). It should be replaced if more than half of it has corroded away. Failure to replace the sacrificial anode may cause the tank itself to corrode. - Check the air inlet for blockages and clear if necessary. - Check evaporator surface and clean if any deposits have formed. - Check that condensation forming on the evaporator surface can be freely drained through the water trap and condensation outlet. - Check hot water tank safety unit (see "Accessories/spare parts"). - We recommend that a service agreement be made with the fitter. Subject to alterations Page 22 of 24

Energy saving advice - Use the "Energy" setting in the VENTILATION menu of the CTS 600 controls. For further details, please refer to the CTS 600 operating instructions. - Keep domestic hot water at a relatively low temperature. Try 45 C for example. - Disconnect supplementary heating, and use it only when there is exceptional demand for hot water. For further details, please refer to the CTS 600 operating instructions. - Keep fan speed as low as possible. - Avoid recirculating hot water. - Distribute bath times throughout the day as VP 18-10P requires 6-7 hours to heat the 180L of water in the tank. - Insulate ducts in accordance with instructions. - Never use cooling in winter. Subject to alterations Page 23 of 24

Accessories/spare parts - Safety unit, including mixer valve with scald control. Item no Statutory safety equipment which must be fitted to the hot water tank. The user has an obligation to test its function at least once a year. To do so, press the handle and check that water emerges through the overflow pipe as a result. The unit consists of a safety valve and an adjustable non-return valve. The non-return valve functions as a stop valve (opens and closes water supply) and prevents return flow from the tank. Reduced hot water flow. - T-filter. Item no Use of this filter is highly recommended. If the filter is lacking, dirt in the system will result in reduced performance and service life, and dirt and dust will be introduced along with the inlet air. The filter is of class G4. - Loose filter. Item no Insulated pollen filter unit for installation in inlet duct. Item no Loose pollen filter. Item no Hygrostat. Item no Allows forced ventilation at high air humidities. Subject to alterations Page 24 of 24
