2 Tailor-made climate control for technical rooms Cooling at high thermal loads Air conditioning is not just an issue in summer. There is also significant demand for cooling in winter. A classic example is the server room with sometimes hundreds of computers. Without high-performance cooling, it would quickly mean overheating and failure for the machines. In such cases, energy-intensive mechanical refrigerating machines are generally used all year round. The utilisation of low outdoor temperatures in winter and in transitional periods, also known as free cooling, can save considerable amounts of energy here. A frequent situation in practice Another characteristic of IT and other technical rooms is how seldom personnel are present, and then mostly just briefly to perform installation or maintenance work. Fresh air is therefore only required on an occasional basis. Comparable tasks for air conditioning systems are frequently found in industrial production facilities, but also in machine rooms such as pump stations or transformer buildings. Central air conditioning unit with free cooling It was for these specific requirements that Menerga developed the Frecolair, whose process control system takes full advantage of the possibilities for free cooling. Various processes take place within the compact device. The control system ensures optimal operation, based on the outdoor temperature and the desired indoor temperature. Freezing cold outdoors When the weather is wintery, the Frecolair mixes a small proportion of air from outside into the recirculated air. This is enough to dispose of the waste heat. If the outdoor temperatures rise, the proportion of air from outside rises continuously up to 100 %. After this point, free cooling alone is no longer sufficient. A refrigerating machine, which is integrated into the central air conditioning unit, switches on. As the outside air is still cooler than the air in the room, however, the free cooling system continues to contribute to the cooling performance. A special feature of the refrigerating machine is the controllable compressor, which adjusts to the refrigeration demand. 3 Operation in high summer The second switch-over point is reached when the outdoor temperature rises above the room temperature. Free cooling is then no longer possible. The Frecolair switches from outside air to recirculated air, because cooling in recirculation mode is now more energy efficient. Complete package with control system The first stage of Menerga s approach is an evaluation of economic efficiency. Once the optimal system concept has been found, the control system is designed and suitable units are selected. The client will always receive a central air conditioning unit in the form of a complete package featuring a control system that is adjusted to the individual requirements of his project. Further specific operating modes can be programmed upon request. When the light switch is operated, for example, i. e. when someone enters the room, it is possible to have a minimum proportion of air from outside added. It is also possible to control the proportion of air from outside by means of air quality sensors. Special applications The design of the Frecolair is also suitable for function rooms that are seldom used. Before the first visitors arrive, the room is heated or cooled depending on the season, saving energy by operating in recirculation mode. When the room is full of people, the air conditioning unit runs with a high proportion of air from outside, in order to ensure the required air quality. If a hall is used more frequently, other air conditioning designs with heat recovery systems, which Menerga likewise supplies in different variants, offer economic advantages. 5 Details which are right every time! Regulation Menerga delivers all air conditioning units with a control system that matches the requirements of the project. This facilitates commissioning and subsequently guarantees the efficient operation of the system. Fan unit Speed-controlled fans save electrical drive energy. Constant monitoring of vibrations, flow rate and pressure increase guarantees operational safety, and draws attention to any maintenance required. Air dampers Precise adherence to the mixing ratios determined by the control system for recirculated and outside air guarantees the quality of the air conditioning. Flap systems from Menerga allow exact distribution of the air streams. Refrigeration The refrigerating machine is integrated into the air conditioning unit in such a way that the waste heat from the compressor and the condenser is discharged with the exhaust air. This allows a compact design and makes installation in the interior of a building easier. Stepless power modulation over a range from 10 % to 100 %. 6 That s how it works: Cooling in recirculation mode at very high outside air temperatures In recirculation mode, the load inside is worked off by the integrated compression refrigerating plant. The condenser is cooled with air from outside. The integrated compression refrigerating plant is in controlled part-load operation. Cooling with air from outside at high return air temperatures In outside air mode, the supply air is cooled by the integrated compression refrigerating plant. The condenser is cooled with the warmer return air. The integrated compression refrigerating plant is in controlled part-load operation. Cooling with a low proportion of air from outside at very high outside air temperatures In recirculation mode, the load inside is worked off by the integrated compression refrigerating plant. The proportion of air from outside required for purposes of hygiene is added in a measured and controlled fashion. Free cooling at low outside air temperatures In recirculation mode, a proportion of air from outside is added to the return air. The proportion of return air replaced by air from outside is discharged into the atmosphere via the outgoing exhaust air fan. Cooling with air from outside at high return air temperatures In outside air mode, the supply air is cooled by the integrated compression refrigerating plant. The condenser is cooled with the warmer return air. The integrated compression refrigerating plant is in controlled part-load operation. 6
