Resilient(Streets( (Zero(Waste(Event(Guide( Thank&you&for&all&that&you&are&doing&to&build&up&our&Whistler&community&by&planning&a&Resilient&Streets&event& Over the following pages we will highlight the main things to think about when planning a zero waste event: Before your event predicting what waste types will be created and find ways to eliminate or reduce waste. During your event understanding how to sort waste correctly and providing the tools for attendees to do so. After your event understanding your impact and ensuring waste ends up in safe hands. We have also provided some supplementary tools and resources in the appendix of this document, and included helpful links throughout. What(is(zero(waste?( Zero waste refers to the diversion of all non-hazardous waste from the landfill through recycling, composting, reducing, reusing, and upcycling. Zero waste requires thinking about how items can be eliminated from the waste stream, and how the remaining waste can be converted into a resource. A zero waste event strives to reduce waste generated and capture as much as possible for composting or recycling in order to minimize the amount of waste discarded in a landfill. An event or operation is typically thought of as zero waste if it diverts 90% or more of its non-hazardous waste from the landfill. So,(you ve(decided(to(host(a(zero(waste(event.(now(what?( Congrats There are many environmental, social, and economic incentives to making your event zero waste. You can save resources, money, and promote responsible waste management in your community through this initiative. There are three stages of zero waste event planning: pre-event, during, and post-event. Read on for ideas and useful resources to use as you are in the planning, execution, and reflection stages of your event.

Before(Your(Event( Review(Event(Plan(&(Set(Goals( Set a zero waste goal. Strive for a challenging but realistic goal for your event. As previously mentioned, an event or operation is typically thought of as zero waste if it diverts 90% or more of its non-hazardous waste from the landfill. Additionally, be sure that your goals are clearly quantified (i.e. in terms of pounds of waste diverted or number of bags collected), so you can easily measure your success after your event. Identify a zero waste leader to champion your zero waste efforts. Identify the number of waste stations you need to have at your event. Think about where the most waste will be generated, what types of waste will be generated, and whether you want to have a volunteer at the station to help attendees sort waste. Communicate your zero waste goal with attendees beforehand. If you are having a BBQ or potluck, encourage people to bring their own cups, plates, or utensils and to avoid single use items or bringing items with a lot of packaging. Plan to keep waste streams simple. If you do have to buy products to execute your event, look for opportunities to reduce waste before it is even created. For example, consider buying condiments in bulk instead of individually packaged, as hard plastics are easier to wash out and recycle. The key concept is to try to consolidate waste into the fewest streams by careful planning. For example, if you buy compostable cups then ensure the lids are compostable too. Refer to our Product Purchasing Guide (Appendix B) for guidance on products to select and avoid. During(Your(Event( Waste(Streams(Explained( In order for a zero waste event to be successful, it is important that your zero waste champions understand the waste streams yourselves. See Appendix C for a detailed training on what goes where, exactly. Appendix A also offers a helpful summarizing infographic of the entire lifecycle of each waste stream. Prepare and print signage that is easy to understand and clearly communicates which items go in which stream to display during your event. See Appendix D or visit our website at for FREE educational signage, available for download and print. Collecting(Waste( Strategically set up your bins where the most waste will be generated of that particular stream. For example, if you are hosting a BBQ or potluck, consider placing an organics bin near the cooking/dining area. Think about where the most waste will be generated, what types of waste will be generated, and, if have a volunteer at the station to help attendees sort waste, let them know where they should be stationed. Don t forget your organics Separating organics from trash can divert a huge amount of waste from landfill. This is perhaps the most important stream for you to collect in order to reach your zero-waste goals. Did you know that over 50% of household waste in Whistler is organics? Did you also know that organics, when wrongfully sent to landfill, do not break down but instead produce Methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO2? Refer to Appendix E for a very helpful infographic on exactly what does and doesn t go in the organics bin.

After(Your(Event( Measures(Of(Success( Measure the amount of waste generated. Consider taking the final weight of materials collected/diverted with a simple scale or by counting the number of bags. The combined weight of every stream besides garbage is how much waste you have diverted from landfill. Reflect on your zero waste goals. Did you reach them? What worked and what didn t? Aim to learn from your successes and failures and keep these in mind for future zero waste events. Communicate your accomplishments with event guests and sponsors. Even if you didn t meet your goals, you can still share your waste reduction efforts and use the lessons learned moving forward & & Thank&you&for&taking&the&time&to&plan&and&execute&an&event&that&not&only&builds&up&our&community,&but& also&deals&with&its&waste&responsibly&& Whilethisguideiswrittenspecificallytohelpyouplanazerowasteevent, alloftheinformationit containsisapplicableinyourhomeaswell.pleasefeelfreetoutilizeanyofthesematerialstohelp manageyourresidentialwaste.

REDUCE, reuse, then recycle. F Remember, the best way to deal with waste is to not create it in the first place. END RESULT Nutrient-rich soil amendment used for landscaping, community gardens and Pemberton farms. Used locally as road aggregate. Plastic is down-cycled into a lesser product. Multi-material items, such as tetra packs are difficult and expensive to recycle and best avoided. Paper and cardboard containing mainly recycled content and varying levels of virgin material. Glass can be recycled infinitely into new glass jars and bottles. Metal can be recycled infinitely into new metal containers. Down-cycled into picture frames and crown moulding, which are not accepted for recycling locally. Whistler s waste goes to Robanco Roosevelt Landfill in Washington State over 700 KM away. WHAT FLATTEN FLATTEN EMPTY & RINSE EMPTY & RINSE EMPTY & RINSE EMPTY & RINSE EMPTY & RINSE Landfills are forever REMEMBER Organics break down aerobically, creating CO2, which is far less harmful than the greenhouse gases created from landfilling food. Keep polluting petroleum plastics out Food soiled paper, napkins and paper towel hinder the paper stream, but benefit compost, so include them in your Food Scraps & Organics Bin. The wavy (corrugated) centre piece found when looking at the edge of a cardboard box differentiates it from paper packaging. Metal lids belong in the Mixed Containers Bin. Return these locally to Regional Recycling at the Nesters Depot to get money back. Include plastic-lined coffee cups. If you can easily poke your finger through it - it belongs in this stream. Keep out Ziplock bags, saran wrap & crinkly plastic. Separate colour and white plastic foam. Needs to be clean. AVOID - Plastics and styrofoam are down-cycled meaning the value of the resource is greatly reduced or permanently lost when processed. For example, a plastic bag cannot be recycled into a new bag without the addition of new oil-based material. Food in landfill, breaks down anaerobically, producing methane a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent that C02. Leachate, a toxic runoff has to be managed to protect ground water. HOW Food is COMPOSTED at the Sea to Sky Soils Composting Facility and bio-solids are COMPOSTED at the Callaghan Composting Facility through an aerobic process. Cardboard and paper are both broken down with a WATER-BASED PROCESS, mulched and combined with virgin fibres. Oils can interfere with this process, so food-soiled paper, like pizza boxes, should go in the Food Scraps & Organics Bin. Plastic is down-cycled into small pellets that cannot chemically re-bond with any impurities present. Plastics must be clean to be properly recycled. Can it be reused? recycled? composted? Glass is crushed, MELTED and impurities burn off. Metal is MELTED, impurities such as labels and leftover contaminants burn off MELTED or COMPACTED to condense for shipping. At the end market it s chipped up, melted again and chopped into pellets. Landfills are designed to bury waste, not break it down. WHERE Single-Family Home Residents: All streams are collected at the Nesters and Function Junction Depots between 7AM and 7PM daily. Multi-Family Home Residents: As of September 2017 all commercial and strata property garbage rooms must collect, separate and manage contamination for all waste streams produced. Food Scraps & Organics Printed Paper & Paper Packaging Corrugated Cardboard Glass Bottles & Jars Refundable Beverage Containers Mixed Containers Plastic Bags & Film Styrofoam Packaging Garbage to LANDFILL LET'S TALK TRASH We have the power to collectively reduce our waste footprint by maximizing our waste diversion efforts. Familiarizing ourselves with how each waste stream is processed helps us to better understand the steps required for success. So, here is the nitty gritty on recycling and composting in Whistler...

Appendix B Product Purchasing Guidelines for Streamlined Waste Segregation Whistler s magnificent backdrop attracts a non-stop line-up of events through all seasons. Whistler events create lasting impressions on the guests and locals who attend them, but can also create a lasting impression on the landfills where event waste is sent to rest. In support of Whistler s community goal of becoming zero waste, events are asked to plan for waste management by not only dealing with the waste generated, but by also taking the appropriate steps to reduce waste before it is created. Outfitting events with recoverable resources, such as reusable, recyclable and compostable items can significantly aid in lessening an event s waste footprint. Managing Product Purchases For Streamlined Waste Segregation: The main priority of waste management is to reduce the amount of waste generated. Careful consideration of the need you are seeking to fill by buying a particular product should be accompanied by consideration of alternative options that may generate less waste. Periodically reviewing processes will help to identify options to reduce or eliminate the amounts of waste being created at your event. When considering product purchases consider the following the points in sequence: Do you need it? The best way to reduce waste is to not produce it in the first place. Is it the best available product? Favour products that are made of a high proportions of recycled content, instead of valuable virgin resources. Is it easy to recycle? Ensure the products that you buy are easy to recycle end of use. How will the product be used in your business by staff and customers? Do existing processes support your intended end of use recycling? For example plastic ramekins are recyclable only if rinsed - is that feasible? If not, consider a different product eg: compostable or reusable. Does the product you selected help you reduce waste? For example does it make sense to source, purchase and recycle paper towel with the posssibility of contamination, or rent an energy efficient handdryer? Product(Purchasing(Guidelines( 1(

In today s convenience society, single-use items have flooded the market and been rapidly adopted. People spend minutes with these items that can take hundreds of years to break down. As people become more conscious of the environmental and societal impacts of large-scale waste generation a continuous flow of new products are being developed and are seeking a place in the growing greener product market. Differentiating between low impact products and those that are green-washed can be a challenge. We hope the information in the following pages will provide a useful and timely guide to help you navigate through this product mix. When you work with suppliers use the language in the look for section as a guide and stay away from products described by language in the avoid section. Compostable Plastics Compostable plastics generate a lot of confusion and are prone to a high level of green-washing. Compostable plastic looks like plastic and feels like plastic, but are an entirely different product derived from plants. Use the information below to navigate through the confusion. At the products end life ensure that you are correctly segregating compostable plastic into the Food Scraps and Organics bin instead of contaminating the plastic recycling bin with a product designed to break down. IS IT A CERTIFIED COMPOSTABLE PLASTIC? If it looks like it contains plastic, it must be a certified bio-plastic to be safe for soils. Products that appear to contain plastic must be certified compostable by the following certifications: These do NOT mean compostable: Must have letters PLA BIODEGRADABLE MADE WITH RECYCLED MATERIAL MADE FROM PLANTS MADE FROM PLANT STARCH OO-DEGRADABLE NATURAL BIO ECO ECO-FRIENDLY EARTH-FRIENDLY GREEN CERTIFIED GREEN ASTM D6400 ASTM D6868 Product(Purchasing(Guidelines( 2(

Product Specific Purchasing Guidelines: Drinking Straws Service Ware and To-Go Containers Top Tips Look for Avoid Great Brands Comments Top Tips Look for Avoid Great Brands Adopt a straws on request policy to reduce the amount of singleuse disposable items at your event and in the community. Compostable PLA Paper Plastic Biodegradable Oxo-degradable Ardvark, paper straws Greenmunch Eco-Products (read comments for more info) There has been a lot of progress made around compostable straws within the last 12 months. Locally Slope Side Supply has sourced a great option that is available at around $8 for a box of 400. This product is not susceptible to the downfalls that compostable straws have showcased in the past, such as cracking. Product code: ST C8GS NB: This product is not made for hot beverages. Opt for re-usable, washable service ware when possible. Portion control is a huge factor in food waste levels but also in creating or reducing demand for to-go containers. Compostable Fibre ware Sugarcane PLA Plastic (plant-based plastic) PLA lined paper products ASTM D6400 BPI Compostable Paper products with plastic coatings or liners Plastic (especially products not made with a high recycled content or that are non-recyclable). 9 Disposable Cutlery Garnish / Burger Skewers Comments Top Tips Look for Avoid Brands we support Comments Look for Avoid Compostable plastics may be susceptible to melting under high temperatures ask your supplier what testing has taken place before you buy. Bio Pak packaging (brown) are made out of 100% recycled material but they are NOT compostable. The Bio Plus TERRA II is the only compostable product from this line. Reduce the uptake of disposable cutlery by providing it upon request and avoid having it available for guests to help themselves to. Compostable Wood (most ideal choice) Compostable Plastic Recyclable Plastic (Must have a recycle symbol on back. Many plastic utensils are made of low-grade plastic mixtures that are too costly to isolate and recycle). Taterware Plant based plastics that are not labelled compostable, such as Taterware Non-recyclable plastic Virgin plastic Aspenware compostable wood cutlery Recyclable plastic cutlery must be rinsed before recycled. Plastics undergo a chemical process when recycled and food impurities impede that process creating a contaminated end product that cannot be salvaged. Most plant based cutlery, such as taterware contains a resin that does not allow the end product to be recycled in plastic recycling or food scraps & organics, and is therefore garbage. Compostable bio-plastic cutlery is susceptible to melt under high heats, but does not need to be rinsed before going into the food scraps & organics bin. Wooden cutlery is the most ideal option for disposable cutlery. Although it has a mouth feel that some people do not enjoy, the product is distinguishable and easily recognized as belonging in the organics and food scraps bin. 11 Appendix C ZERO WASTE HEROES MATERIALS TRAINING PACKAGE ABOUT AWARE The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment (AWARE), has been Whistler s environmental charity since AWARE is a member driven charity that works to protect the natural environment in Whistler and the Sea-to- Sky through advocacy and speaking up about key environmental issues, while empowering other to do the same through science-based research and education. Organizational Priorities: Safeguarding habitat, biodiversity and wilderness values Connecting people with nature Building sustainable community When people are asking questions relating to AWARE please direct them to more information at : Website: info@awarewhistler.org WHAT IS ZERO WASTE? Zero Waste is a whole systems approach that considers the flow of products and materials from the first stages of product and process design, through resource extraction, manufacturing, consumption and disposal. Waste is seen as more than just garbage it is seen as a valuable resource. Given this broader perspective, the Zero Waste approach aims to minimize the consumption of materials at the beginning of the product life cycle, in order to reduce the environmental impact of the product at the later stages. (SLRD) The Zero Waste International Alliance defines Zero Waste as 90% diversion from landfills and incinerators. WHAT IS ZERO WASTE NOT? Zero Waste is not just 100% recycling. Yes, we do want to recycle everything, but that comes after waste prevention, product redesign and reuse. Even when everything is recycled, there can still be badly designed products or packaging that waste energy, water, and other scarce resources. A zero waste approach evaluates the product s entire lifecycle, not just if it can be recycled or composted.

RECYCLE BC (formerly: MULTI-MATERIALS BC (MMBC)) Whistler s depots participate in MMBC s packaging and printed-paper recycling program, which started in This shifted the cost burden of recycling from the municipality (taxpayers dollars) onto the producers of the goods being recycled. This is known as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Businesses that supply packaging and printed paper to BC residents are now responsible for collecting and managing these materials so they can be recycled. Multi-Material BC (MMBC), a non-profit organization financed by these businesses, is now responsible for residential recycling programs in many areas across BC, either directly or by working with local governments, First Nations, private companies and non-profit organizations. MMBC is among more than 20 Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs introduced in BC over the past two decades. Through these programs, industry is responsible for end-of-life management of items such as beverage containers, electronics, paint, used oil, tires and batteries. EPR is a way for businesses to be accountable for the environmental impact of products during all stages of the product lifecycle, from selecting the materials used in production to collection and recycling when a product is post-consumer. ( Why isn t YZ accepted at the depot? When people inquire why a certain item was not accepted at one of Whistler s depots it is often because the item does not fall under the MMBC packaging and printed paper category. For example, MMBC will take the box that a recyclable toy came in, but not the toy itself. Where do I recycle items the depot does not accept? Use the RCBC Online Recyclepedia or App to locate over 1,000 drop-off locations and recycling options for over 70 materials or products across BC. SINGLE USE ITEMS The best way to deal with waste is to avoid producing it in the first place Single use items such as plastic bags, straws, coffee cups (most are 10% plastic lined) and water bottles serve a function for a very short period of time and if not properly recycled or recyclable they clog our landfills for centuries to come. Glass is easy to recycle. It can be recycled into a high quality product that can be used again and again. Labels can be left on. Lids belong in the Mixed Containers bin. Melted in furnace. A glass jar can be recycled to make a new glass jar. Locally glass is crushed and used in roads.

Clean, dry, flat, major tape removed. Cardboard is recycled through a water based process that mulches it into pulp. Fibres become shorter and shorter until they no longer bond to make paper and new fibres must be added. Corrugated cardboard (which is held together with glue) is harder to recycle than the thin cardboard used to package groceries. If wet, or food contaminated place in the Food Scraps and Organics bin. Styrofoam is a trademark form of polystyrene foam insulation Clean. No peanuts. Both Styrofoam and soft plastics are hard to recycle. They must be very clean and turn out a low quality product that isn t considered very valuable. While it can be recycled the recycling market is diminishing, and it is not a closed loop system meaning the product is not actually recycled, but down cycled, turning it into a lesser quality product. What happens to food in the landfill versus composter? In a composter food breaks down in the presence of oxygen, producing carbon dioxide (CO2). Landfills are sealed therefore there is no aeration to provide oxygen. Food in a landfill breaks down to produce methane, a green house gas 72% more potent than CO2. Where does Whistler s food waste go after the event? Whistler has two nearby composting facilities: Callaghan Whistler Composting Facility Managed by Carney s Waste Systems, which predominantly deals with biosolids (human excrement) from Whistler and the Sea-to-Sky communities, and some food waste. Sea to Sky Soils Operate a food, green and agricultural waste commercial composting facility for the Sea to Sky area in Rutherford (between Whistler and Pemberton). How do you tell the difference between a compostable and biodegradable item? Biodegradable compostable All compostable items are biodegradable, but not all biodegradable items are compostable We know, it s confusing To be a certified compostable products have to break down over a certain period of time (normally 180 days or fewer) and cannot leave any toxic residue behind. Biodegradable plastics breakdown into small fragments, which make them even more challenging to clean up. Keep our soil petroleum free by reading labels carefully and being aware of greenwashing. What is ASTM D6400 Certification? ASTM D6400 is the standard specification for labeling of PLA materials designed to be aerobically composted in municipal or industrial facilities. It s important to make sure the service-ware being sent to a composting facility meets this specification so it will break down properly and won t compromise

the quality of the compost. Why do napkins, food soiled paper and cardboard belong in the food scraps & organics bin? Paper is broken down through a water process and oils from food interfere with this. Where do I put my oil (bacon grease)? Small quantities of oil can go in the Food Scraps and Organics bins. Large oil producers such as Restaurants must separately collect their oil. Why can t Tatterware be composted? This green washed product contains plant-based material and a binding resin that does not allow the cutlery to breakdown and is therefore it is not compostable or recyclable. Remember, not too long ago we didn t recycle anything and it all ended up in the trash, so remind people who don t feel like composting is achievable that we have proven we can make the change before Metal: Easy to recycle. Recycing method: Metals are melted down. Impurities melt off. A metal can be recycled into a new metal can. Plastics: Of all the different materials we toss in the trash, plastics cause the biggest problem. Why? Plastics lasts a long time in the environment without breaking down sometimes as much as 500 years. Light and they float, so plastic litter drifts across the oceans and washes up on our beaches, killing wildlife and scarring shorelines Hard to recycle. There are many different kinds of plastic (numbered in triangle) and they all have to be recycled in a different way Since there is so much plastic, waste plastic material doesn't have much value, so it's not always economic to collect Plastic containers also tend to be large and, unless people squash them, they quickly fill up recycling bins. This is why lids off is very important. Why do plastics need to be rinsed? Plastic recycling relies on a chemical process that is impacted by contaminants, such as food particles, which interfere with the re-bonding of the plastic. If batches of plastic are too contaminated they get sent to the landfill, instead of being recycled. Why can t straws and plastic cutlery be recycled? Any plastic item without a recycle symbol on it belongs in the garbage (check the back of cutlery). These items are made up blends of low grade plastic that are extremely difficult and not financially viable to separate.

Why aren t Ziploc bags recyclable? What if I cut the zipper off? Two types of plastic that can t be separated. MMBC does not accept products, only packaging. Why aren t you collecting soft plastics and Styrofoam (pink and purple dots on banner)? Both Styrofoam and soft plastics are hard to recycle. They must be very clean and turn out a low quality product that isn t considered very valuable. While it can be recycled the recycling market is diminishing, and it is not a closed loop system meaning the product is not actually recycled, but down cycled, turning it into a lesser quality product. Envelope windows are accepted. Can only be recycled so many times because it's made from plant fibres that become shorter during papermaking. Once too short, they no longer make decent paper. In practice, this means some new paper always has to be added during the papermaking process. Why do napkins, food soiled paper and cardboard belong in the food scraps & organics bin? Paper is broken down through a water process and oils from food interfere with this. Using bleach to de-ink papers can be an environmentally harmful process and it produces toxic ink wastes that have to be disposed of Clean and rinsed to get deposits back. Mining aluminum is a very energy-intensive and environmentally harmful process. That's why aluminum cans have a relatively high value and why recycling them is ideal. The focus of our conversations at the Zero Waste Heroes should always be on reducing waste by reducing consumption. Whistler s waste goes to Washington State in the United States. & & & &
