4 PREPARATION TIPS NOT IN MY RECYCLING CART! Most frequent unacceptable items and where to dispose of them ITEM HOW TO DISPOSE WHERE TO DISPOSE Garbage Curbside Garbage Cart (Black lid) RINSE CONTAINERS TO MINIMIZE ODOURS FLATTEN MATERIAL TO SAVE SPACE PLACE CAPS AND MATERIALS LOOSE IN CART Garden Hose Food & Yardwaste Curbside Curbside Garbage Cart (Black lid) Organics Cart (Green lid) NO PLASTIC BAGS When recyclables are tied into plastic bags (such as grocery bags), the bags and contents need to be thrown away because, for safety reasons, bags cannot be opened once they reach the recycling facility. The only exception to this is shredded paper, which should be tied in a clear bag and included with your other recycling. UNACCEPTABLE MATERIALS (CONTAMINATION) Unacceptable materials negatively impact the recycling process as they must be removed at the recycling processing facility. This additional step results in financial penalties that may impact waste collection service utility costs. It s far easier, and less costly, if we all do our part to ensure that we are only placing acceptable materials into the recycling cart. Plastic Bags Electronics & Batteries Foam Packaging Glass Bottles & Jars Hazardous Waste (Propane/ Butane Tanks/ Syringes) (or use as garbage bag) Scrap Metal Failure to follow these recycling requirements will result in your Recycling Cart not being serviced. 5 The final sorted materials, such as plastic jugs, newspaper, cardboard, steel cans, aluminum cans, etc. are baled and prepared for shipping. The bales are shipped to material re-manufacturers to be processed into new materials. WHAT HAPPENS TO MY RECYCLING? PLASTICS are shredded, washed and pelletized. When you set your materials out at curbside, they are collected by a specialized truck. These trucks are designed for efficient collection. Some have automated arms, compaction systems and even the ability to collect other waste types in separate compartments. MATERIAL RECOVERY PAPER is washed, pulped and spun into fibre. FACILITY METALS Materials are transported to a material recovery facility (MRF) and put onto a conveyor belt where they enter the sorting process. The materials travel along a series of conveyor belts where large non-recyclable items (contamination) are first manually removed. A FIBRE SCREEN separates heavy and light material using star-shaped steel discs. Paper and envelopes fall below the screen while larger cardboard is propelled over. are shredded, smelted, and rolled into sheets. Some materials are recycled back to their original purpose, like plastic bottles and paper products, closing the loop of the product s life cycle. Others are transformed into completely new products like furniture, car bumpers and shelving. Some materials, such as steel and aluminum cans, have no limit to the number of times they can be recycled. EDDY CURRENT 10 A MAGNETIC SEPARATOR is suspended over a conveyor belt and runs continuously to remove steel cans from the stream of materials travelling below. An EDDY CURRENT causes aluminum cans, pie plates, etc. to be repelled into a separate collection bin. An OPTICAL SORTER uses infrared light to detect material compositions. It then uses an air jet to sort materials. Once the new products and packaging are created, they are packaged and sold back to you. Your materials are recycled into any of these products, plus many more! 11

Larger amounts of grease can be poured into a tin can to cool and solidify before disposing into your organics cart (without the can). Do not pour oil or grease down the sink, no matter how much hot water or soap you pour down after it. Sooner or later it solidifies and clogs pipes, causing property damage or raw sewage backups in your home. ORGANICS 14 15

Store your cart in a cool, shaded, ventilated area and keep the lid closed PLASTIC BAGS, MILK JUGS & YOGURT TUBS GARBAGE DIAPERS Wash your organics cart periodically with mild soap or a vinegar water solution. It s far easier, and less costly, if we all do our part to ensure that we are only placing acceptable materials into the organics cart. Following these steps will help reduce contamination: NO PLASTIC Please do not place any plastics (including compostable or biodegradable bags) into organics. When cleaning out your fridge, please remember to remove food from plastic bags, wrap, and styrofoam.
