1 PRODUCT: 7020/7025/7030 NO.: 5 DATE: 1/22/01 SUBJECT: UPPER FUSING HEAT ROLLER REPLACEMENT 30% FOC Program for Rollers with Coating Buildup /7030 Only Lines on copies from lead-to-trail, intermittent fuser jams, or fuser failure codes are symptoms of a coating buildup on the upper fusing heat roller of the fusing unit. Code F35-7 may also occur due to excessive buildup on temperature sensors TH1 and TH2. This coating, which may be slightly blue in color and is concentrated in the center area of the roller, forms as a result of inadequate cleaning of the upper fusing heat roller due to insufficient pressure being applied to the upper fusing heat roller by the pressure roller. For those machines that are currently exhibiting the symptoms noted above due to upper fusing roller coating buildup, a new roller (reddish in color) is available. This new roller, which reduces the likeliness of coating buildup, is factory installed in machines starting with the serial numbers listed below. For machines below the listed serial numbers, a 30% free-of-charge program is in effect. This is not a mandatory program. Note: The height of the neutralizing brush located under the pressure roller must be adjusted to compensate for the installation of the new upper fusing heat roller. Four washers per machine are required for this adjustment, which are also available at 30% free-of-charge for those machines below the listed serial numbers. Instructions for applying these washers are included in this bulletin. Models Beginning Serial Numbers NE PE05852 Note: All model 7025 machines are factory installed with the new upper fusing heat roller and washers. Note: To help prevent this condition in machines not yet affected, it is highly recommended that the preventative procedure provided in 7020/7025/7030 Technical Bulletin #4, dated 1/15/01, be installed. 2 PARTS Free-of-charge program Through July 31, 2001, the new upper fusing roller and washers can be obtained from the Parts Distribution Center free of charge for 30% of the machines below the listed serial numbers, using the special ordering procedure in this bulletin. The Parts Center will charge for all parts ordered using standard ordering procedures. Note that 4 washers are needed per machine. DEALER DESCRIPTION PART NO. Special FTR program A special FTR program has been established for any servicing locations that may have experienced a failure rate in excess of the 30% FOC program provided in this bulletin. For entitlement to this FTR program, complete the requirements provided in the checklist below. Checklist Provide the total number of models 7020 and 7030 below the serial number cut-in. Complete an FTR form (Field Technical Report, Form TP-2) for affected machines within the remaining 70% group of your installed base. FTR forms can be downloaded from the General Information Business Forms for Konica Employees section of Konica s secured web site. Provide documented proof (i.e., complete machine service history, etc.) with fuser roller replacement highlighted. Provide your contact name and phone number and/or . Engineering will evaluate your claim and notify you of the status and expected delivery date. Assistance for servicing locations with large installed base In an effort to assist servicing locations with a large installed base of models 7020 and 7030, we are allocating fuser units free of charge equal to 2% of the installed base. Service locations with a combined quantity of 50 to 99 model 7020s and/or 7030s will receive one fuser unit; locations with 100 to 149 machines will receive two fuser units, etc. Based on the total number of machines identified on each order, the appropriate quantity of fusing units will be included with the fusing roller shipments. 3 SPECIAL ORDERING PROCEDURE Order form B--439 must be completed as instructed below for entitlement to this free-of-charge program. The Parts Center will charge for all parts ordered using standard ordering procedures. This free-of-charge program expires July 31, Orders will be filled at a 30% rate under this program. 1. Use a separate Form B when ordering these parts. Do not mix other parts with this order. 2. 4 UPPER FUSING HEAT ROLLER REPLACEMENT To replace the upper fusing heat roller, follow the steps below in conjunction with the detailed procedure outlined in the Fixing Unit Section of the 7020 Service Manual for the removal and installation of the upper fusing roller. WARNING: To avoid injury, turn off the machine and allow sufficient time for the fusing unit to cool down before proceeding. 1. Remove the fusing unit from the machine and place it on a sturdy, flat work surface. 2. Remove the external components of the fusing unit: front and rear covers, cleaning unit cover, and the fusing exit plate. 3. Remove the main and sub heating lamps from the upper fusing roller. Note: Pay particular attention to the 4 cautions listed on page 3-31 of the Fixing Unit Section of the 7020 Service Manual for the removal and insertion of these lamps. 4. Disconnect the 4-pin connector (see Figure 1) located in the cleaning unit, then remove the cleaning unit and swing it away from the fusing unit. It is not necessary to disconnect the cleaning unit wiring harness at the back end (gear end) of the fusing unit. 5. Lower the fusing guide assembly to disengage the pressure roller from the upper fusing heat roller 6. Remove the upper fusing heat roller and associated hardware (gear, sleeves, etc. [hardware to be reinstalled on new roller]). 7. Remove the pressure roller. 8. Adjust the height of the neutralizing brush. To do this, remove the 2 screws of the neutralizing brush (see Figure 1) and place 2 washers between the neutralizing brush support plate and the neutralizing brush where the screw holes are located (see Figure 2). Secure the neutralizing brush with the 2 screws. 9. While the fusing unit is disassembled, clean the fusing heat roller sensors (TH1 and TH2) and thermostat (TS) with isopropyl alcohol (see Figure 1). Reassemble the fusing unit and insert it back into the machine. Caution: Ensure that the temperature sensors (TH1 and TH2) and the thermostat (TS) are making contact with the upper fusing heat roller after the roller is reinstalled. 5 ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE FOR MACHINE JITTER Although it is somewhat rare, it is always a good idea to double check for possible lead-to-trail jitter which may occur due to minute differences in fuser rollers. 1. Place a test chart (fishing reel chart or equivalent) on the platen. Make a copy using 11 x 17 inch paper. Check the copy for signs of lead-to-trail jitter. If machine jitter is evident, proceed to step Perform the printer system vertical magnification adjustment outlined on page 6-56 of the 7020 Service Manual, using the recommended settings provided below. a. First adjustment: reduce the reduction ratio by 4 steps (for example, if the current value is --1, the new value will be --5 ). Make another copy and recheck for machine jitter. If jitter still persist, proceed to step b. b. Second adjustment (if necessary): enlarge the adjustment value by 1 step (setting was --5, now it is --4 ). Make another copy and recheck for machine jitter. If jitter still persist, proceed to step c. c. Third and subsequent adjustments (if necessary): enlarge the value by 1 step each time, checking for jitter in between adjustments, until the jitter is corrected.
