APPLIED VEHICLES: VINs AND DATES: 2012 Altima Sedan (L32) Built before: 1N4BL2AP(*)CC / 01-Feb N4AL2AP(*)CN / 01-Feb Altima Coupe (CL32) Built before 1N4BL2EP(*)CC / 01-Feb Sentra (B16) Built before 3N1CB6AE(*)CL / 16-Feb 2012 Built before 3N1AB6AP(*)CL / 10-Dec 2011 IF YOU CONFIRM: A/C is not blowing cold AND Inspection of the compressor shows green dye is present near or around the oil Drain Plug bolt (Figures 1 and 2), this Service Bulletin applies. ACTION: Figure 1 Figure 2 Use the DIAGNOSIS FLOW CHART on page 3 to help diagnose and identify the source/cause. Nissan Bulletins are intended for use by qualified technicians, not 'do-it-yourselfers'. CLAIMS INFORMATION: Altima Submit a Primary Part (PP) type line claim using the following claims coding: DESCRIPTION PFP OP CODE SYM DIA FRT Rpl Compressor Bolt (QR25) 0.3 (1) TX37AA GB 58 Rpl Compressor Bolt (VQ) 0.6 (1) Refer to the electronic parts catalog (FAST) and use the A/C Compressor assembly part number as the Primary Part (PFP). Sentra Submit a Primary Part (PP) type line claim using the following claims coding: DESCRIPTION PFP OP CODE SYM DIA FRT Rpl Compressor Bolt (MR20) 0.7 (1) TX37AA GB 58 Rpl Compressor Bolt (QR25) 0.6 (1) Refer to the electronic parts catalog (FAST) and use the A/C Compressor assembly part number as the Primary Part (PFP). 3 REPAIR FLOW CHART A/C is not cold Yes Inspect the compressor for the presence of leak dye (using Standard tools/fluorescent light and glasses see photo on first page). Is there dye near and around the compressor oil drain bolt? No Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for Service Procedure. This bulletin does not apply Refer to Electronic Service Manual (ESM), Symptom diagnosis Insufficient cooling trouble shooting to diagnose lack of cooling. Replace Compressor Drain Plug bolt assembly with Parts listed and vehicle specific Service Procedures below. NOTE: If no green dye is present around the compressor Drain Plug bolt and there is low, or no refrigerant, this bulletin does not apply. Refer to the ESM and use the standard repair and warranty procedures as needed. SERVICE PROCEDURE: Altima VQ35 NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the A/C compressor to complete this procedure. 1. Remove refrigerant charge from the A/C system using recovery machine, following the instructions on your machine. 2. Note the quantity of oil removed from the system by recovery machine. 3. Set vehicle on a lift and raise so that right front wheel can be removed, then remove wheel. 3/9 NTB12-044a
4 4. Remove Fender Protector Side Cover. 5. Loosen A/C drive belt and remove Idler Pulley to gain access to A/C Drain Plug. 6. Remove contaminants from Drain Plug (Figure 3) and surrounding surfaces. (Use Isopropanol 50% or Refrigerant Dye Cleaner J as recommended in the Electronic Service Manual) Location of Compressor Drain Plug VQ35 Altima Drain Plug location Figure 3 Note: Use new or clean gloves (rubber or leather only) when removing Drain Plug from 7. Mark Drain Plug with red dot (ink or paint pen), and then remove old Plug and O-ring. Keep O-ring seat surface clean so that contamination does not enter 8. Add same amount of (new) oil as removed by recovery machine. 9. Install new pre-assembled Drain Plug and lubricated O-ring (service kit) and then torque plug to Nm. Confirm new Plug has black dot marking. 10. Clean Drain Plug and surrounding surfaces to remove any remaining oil (Use Isopropanol 50% or Refrigerant Dye Cleaner J-43872). Confirm that black dot mark has not washed away. 11. Reassemble vehicle in reverse order. 4/9 NTB12-044a
5 12. Evacuate the A/C-system for a minimum of 25 minutes. 13. Recharge system with original refrigerant charge indicated on A/C-system label. Refer to ESM for procedure to recharge A/C system. 14. Run engine and A/C-system with full blower for 5 minutes to make sure system is working properly (refer to performance chart in service manual). 15. Recheck the Drain Plug area for leaks after functional check. Altima QR25 NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the A/C compressor to complete this procedure. 1. Remove refrigerant charge from the A/C system using recovery machine, following the instructions on your machine. 2. Note the quantity of oil removed from the system by recovery machine. 3. Remove Front Air Duct. 4. Remove contaminants from Drain Plug (Figure 4) and surrounding surfaces. (Use Isopropanol 50% or Refrigerant Dye Cleaner J as recommended in the Electronic Service Manual) Location of Compressor Drain Plug QR25 Altima Drain Bolt location Figure 4 Note: Use new or clean gloves (rubber or leather only) when removing Drain Plug from 5/9 NTB12-044a
6 5. Mark Drain Plug with red dot (ink or paint pen), and then remove old Plug and O-ring. Keep O-ring seat surface clean so that contamination does not enter 6. Add same amount of (new) oil as removed by recovery machine. 7. Install new pre-assembled Drain Plug and lubricated O-ring (service kit) and then torque plug to Nm. Confirm new Plug has black dot marking. 8. Clean Drain Plug and surrounding surfaces to remove any remaining oil (Use Isopropanol 50% or Refrigerant Dye Cleaner J-43872). Confirm that black dot mark has not washed away. 9. Reinstall Front Air Duct 10. Evacuate the A/C-system for a minimum of 25 minutes. 11. Recharge system with original refrigerant charge indicated on A/C-system label. Refer to ESM for procedure to recharge A/C system. 12. Run engine and A/C-system with full blower for 5 minutes to make sure system is working properly (refer to performance chart in service manual). 13. Recheck the Drain Plug area for leaks after functional check. Sentra QR25 NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the A/C compressor to complete this procedure. 1. Remove refrigerant charge from the A/C system using recovery machine, following the instructions on your machine. 2. Note the quantity of oil removed from the system by recovery machine. 3. Set vehicle on a lift and raise so that right front wheel can be removed, then remove wheel. 4. Remove Fender Protector Side Cover. 5. Remove Engine Undercover. 6. Remove the fasteners for the front half of the Fender protector and allow it to hang down. 6/9 NTB12-044a
7 7. Remove contaminants from Drain Plug (Figure 5) and surrounding surfaces. (Use Isopropanol l 50% or Refrigerant Dye Cleaner J as recommended in the Electronic Service Manual) Location of Compressor Drain Plug QR25 Sentra Drain Bolt location Figure 5 Note: Use new or clean gloves (rubber or leather only) when removing Drain Plug from 8. Mark Drain Plug with red dot (ink or paint pen), and then remove old Plug and O-ring. Keep O-ring seat surface clean so that contamination does not enter 9. Add same amount of (new) oil as removed by recovery machine. 10. Install new pre-assembled Drain Plug and lubricated O-ring (service kit) and then torque plug to Nm. Confirm new Plug has black dot marking. 11. Clean Drain Plug and surrounding surfaces to remove any remaining oil (Use Isopropanol 50% or Refrigerant Dye Cleaner J-43872). 8 15. Run engine and A/C-system with full blower for 5 minutes to make sure system is working properly (refer to performance chart in service manual). 16. Recheck the Drain Plug area for leaks after functional check. Sentra MR20 1. Remove refrigerant charge from the A/C system using recovery machine, following the instructions on your machine. 2. Note the quantity of oil removed from the system by recovery machine. 3. Set vehicle on a lift and raise so that covers can be removed. 4. Remove Fender Protector Side Cover. 5. Remove Engine Undercover. 6. Disconnect both High Side and Low Side refrigerant lines from Compressor. 7. Loosen Compressor drive belt and then remove belt. 8. Disconnect electrical connector and remove Compressor. 9. Remove contaminants from Drain Plug (Figure 6) and surrounding surfaces. (Use Isopropanol 50% or Refrigerant Dye Cleaner J as recommended in the Electronic Service Manual) Location of Compressor Drain Plug MR20 Sentra Drain Bolt location Figure 6 Note: Use new or clean gloves (rubber or leather only) when removing Drain Plug from 8/9 NTB12-044a
9 10. Mark Drain Plug with red dot (ink or paint pen), and then remove old Plug and O-ring. Keep O-ring seat surface clean so that contamination does not enter 11. Add same amount of (new) oil as removed by recovery machine. 12. Install new pre-assembled Drain Plug and lubricated O-ring (service kit) and then torque plug to Nm. Confirm new Plug has black dot marking. 13. Clean Drain Plug and surrounding surfaces to remove any remaining oil (Use Isopropanol 50% or Refrigerant Dye Cleaner J-43872). Confirm that black dot mark has not washed away. 14. Replace the Compressor High Side and Low Side line O-rings and reassemble vehicle in reverse order. 15. Evacuate the A/C-system for a minimum of 25 minutes. 16. Recharge system with original refrigerant charge indicated on A/C-system label. Refer to ESM for procedure to recharge A/C system. 17. Run engine and A/C-system with full blower for 5 minutes to make sure system is working properly (refer to performance chart in service manual). 18.
