1 Borough of Emerson 2018 Solid Waste & Recycling Newsletter and Dog & Cat License Application RECYCLING REMINDERS Please don t put recycling in your garbage. It costs money, it s bad for the environment and it s against the law! It costs the Borough $69.50 per ton to dispose of household waste in a landfill but only $17.50 per ton if it is taken to a recycling facility. Every ton of material taken out of the landfill saves 75% of the cost of disposal. In 2016 Borough residents recycled 1052 tons of cardboard, paper, cans, plastic and glass bottles which saved the Borough nearly $55,000. This is a great result. But currently only 25% of all household waste generated is recycled. If every resident of Emerson recycled just 1 pound more of waste every week, the Borough would save another $14,000 per year. 6 PET WASTE POLLUTES OUR WATERS What You Can Do to Help Protect Our Water Clean and plentiful water is important to our families, our environment our economy and our quality of life. Did you know that animal waste from pets can pollute our waters? When left on the ground, pet waste is washed by rain and melting snow and ice into storm drains that carry it to our rivers, lakes, the ocean and drinking water. Animal waste contains a high concentration of nutrients, as well as bacteria and disease-causing microorganisms that can cause problems. What You Can Do Pet owners of anyone who takes your pet for walks must properly dispose of any waste by picking it up, wrapping it and either placing it in the trash or flushing it unwrapped down the toilet. Ordinance No Disposal of Pet Waste All pet owners are required to immediately and properly dispose of their pet s solid waste deposited on any property public or private not owned or possessed by that person.
