2 1. The installation of this appliance must be carried out by a CORGI registered person, and in accordance with the requirements of the current GAS SAFETY (INSTALLATION AND USE) REGULATIONS. 2. As with any fire, certain components will become hot in use, e.g. the decorative front fret. Care should be exercised when using the control of the appliance when it is hot. We also recommend that a fireguard, conforming to SS 1945, be fitted for the protection of young children, the elderly or infirm. 3. When new, the ceramic coals may produce a slight odour, but this will completely vanish after a few hours of use. 4. Handle coals gently. They are fragile. A soft brush can be used to clean them of any excess soot. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should coals be washed. 9. These instructions are provided to assist you to operate the fire correctly and should be kept in a safe place. 10. In the event of a power cut the fire will not operate until power is restored. The pilot flame will remain alight. It is good practice to set all switches to the "off' position to avoid the appliance relighting unexpectedly. 12. This appliance is fitted with a flue blockage safety device which will shut the appliance down in the event of abnormal conditions. The device is NOT a substitute for an independently mounted Carbon Monoxide Detector. Your Ultraflue is fitted with a Flame Supervision Device which cuts off the gas supply to your fire if, for any reason, the pilot light is extinguished. The pilot light heats the probe of the thermocouple and allows gas to flow to the main burner. If, due to pilot failure, the thermocouple cools, no gas will flow to the main burner. If the fire is turned off or the flames go out, wait for AT LEAST 3 MINUTES before attempting to relight.

3 2. Switch on the fan by depressing the "ON" switch on the control panel, and you should be able to hear the fan operating 3. After a short while, the fan will achieve optimum speed and the pressure switch will detect adequate air flow and open the solenoid valve. 6. With the knob still depressed turn it from the "OFF" position to the "PILOT' position until the pilot ignites. Continue to depress the control knob for a further seconds until the pilot flame is stable. 7. If the pilot flame goes out, repeat the process, holding down the control knob for a slightly longer period. 8. Depress the control knob and turn anti-clockwise to the" MAX" position. The main burner should now light. When first lit, the flames tend to be rather blue in colour. Once the core of the fire becomes hot, the flames will become yellow and more lifelike. During this initial warm-up period it is recommended that the control remains at the "MAX" position. This allows the fire to reach its optimum condition more quickly. 9. The fire can be altered between the "MAX" and "MIN" positions by depressing the valve slightly and turning in the required direction. 1. Depress the control knob slightly and turn clockwise to the "PILOT" position. The main burner should go out but the pilot flame should remain alight. 2. Depress the control knob slightly and turn clockwise to the "OFF" position. The pilot flame should go out.

4 1. Ensure that the fire is cold before undertaking any cleaning. Also ensure that the appliance is disconnected from the mains supply. Remember that heat is retained for some time after the fire is switched off. In normal use, your Ultraflue requires only minimal cleaning. Soot can form on the coals and can easily be removed by lifting the relevant coals from the fire and cleaning with a soft brush. If it is necessary to remove all coals for cleaning then any soot or debris should be removed from the ceramic elements and from the burners. 2. If large pieces of debris are found in the fire - sufficient to alter the appearance or operation of the appliance - then the flue/fan system should be checked and inspected and the appliance serviced before further use. 3. In any event, the fan and flue system should be checked annually to ensure continued clearance of combustion products and that there is no excessive build-up of soot. ASSEMBLING THE FIRE AND PLACING THE COALS (See Installation Instructions) The fuel bed layout is critical to the correct performance of the fire. Do not attempt to alter it by removing coals or increasing the number of coals supplied. If any coals are dislodged, or after cleaning, it is important that they are replaced in the same manner as when originally fitted. (See Installation Instructions). The burner tray and ceramics are illustrated in figure 10 (Installation Instructions). Take the base ceramic and place it on the burner tray. Take the back ceramic and slide it behind the steel retaining lugs to rest on the top of the base ceramic. a) Place a row of 5 large coals across the middle of the base ceramic in the marked zone. These should be spaced about 5mm apart. ROW A. b) Place a row of 5 medium coals on top of ROW A so they are pushed back and are resting on the rear ceramic. ROW B. c) Place a row of 7 medium coals along the top of the raised slotted part of the base ceramic at the front of the burner. These coals should be positioned so that they are equally spaced (about 5m) and drawn forward so that they touch the front coal retainer. ROW C. d) Place a row of 6 random coals between the 7 front coals and the 5 large coals. ROW D. e) Place a row of 4 medium coals resting on the rear ceramic and ROW B. ROW E. t) Place a row of 5 random coals resting between ROW B and ROW D. ROW F. The coal lay described is for the 16" model. For the 18" model the same method should be used, but the following quantities should be used:- ROW A ROWB ROWC ROWD ROWE ROWF 18" Models. 6 Large 6 Medium 8 Medium 7 Random 5 Medium 6 Random Your appliance should be serviced annually in order to ensure no deterioration in its performance and appearance. We recommend that you contact your Verine supplier who will ensure that the work is carried out by a Corgi registered engineer. 57d56

5 The fan unit is fitted with an electronic control unit that monitors the behaviour of the fan during the start up procedure and in the event of high gusts of wind. When the fan is switched on, the control will set it to run at high speed until the air pressure switch senses a satisfactory amount of airflow. Once the airflow has been proved, the fan will slow down to its operating speed. If a high gust of wind causes the pressure switch to return to the 'no air' position, the controller will switch over to the high speed setting to overcome the wind. The pressure switch will then switch back and the controller will return the fan to its operating speed. In the event of the gust of wind being more persistent, the controller will maintain the fan at high speed for approximately 6 seconds. If the pressure switch has not sensed a return of airflow in this time, the controller will shut down the whole system. In this event the fire will go out and will only relight if the ON switch on the switch panel/switch assembly is pressed. When first switched on the fan may 'pulse' between high and low operating speed settings. This is normal providing the fan runs at a steady speed after 5-10 minutes of use with the fire alight. Your Ultraflue fire is designed and manufactured to give many years of trouble free operation. In the unlikely event of any component failure or installation problem the appliance will restore to a "fail-safe" condition. However, faults can be caused by situations other than component failure and we strongly recommend that you consider the following points when using your fire. Since the air supply for the fire is drawn by a fan and extracted to the outside air along with the spent products of combustion, it is inevitable that fluff, lint, dust and even pet hairs could stick to the fan blades in the flue system. Without regular cleaning during maintenance checks this build up could slow down the fan to an extent that might cause the flue-flow safety device to operate and shut down the gas supply to the fire. This "nuisance" shut-down can be avoided by observing the servicing and maintenance recommendations in the Installation Manual. Should the fan not run correctly, the safety device will not allow gas to the fire. This can be caused by insufficient air flow, low fan speed or a flue blockage. Should this situation occur, you must contact your Verine stockist. It is also possible that the air flow sensing device in the flue system might, under extreme weather conditions such as high blustery winds, shut down the fire inadvertently. This can be overcome by switching off the fire, and relighting after a delay of approximately three minutes. 57d56
