3 Basic information on heating industrial packaging Industrial packaging, such as buckets, canisters, hobbocks, drums and IB containers, are commonplace and offer many advantages. The removal of the liquid, viscous or solid contents stored in them is often problematic, however. They need the right flowability and temperature for convenient removal and correct further processing. A simple and safe way of ensuring this is to heat the complete container including its contents. Our heaters for industrial packaging are flexible heating mats placed directly on and attached to the container to be heated. Common heaters therefore include heating jackets, heating sleeves, heating belts or heating rings. Depending on how much and how quickly heat is supplied, heating with high power and tempering or maintaining a constant temperature with low power are distinguished. The heaters differ in their dimensions, dependent on the shape and volume of the container to be heated in the design and materials, dependent on heating power and maximum temperature according to the application area Depending on the contents and application, heat is supplied: to melt a solid in order to be able to process it as a fluid to reduce the viscosity of a liquid in order to be able to pump or fill it better to avoid crystallisation or flocculation of cold-sensitive media to keep the content at a constant, optimal processing temperature The time required for heating depends on a wide range of factors, including: quantity and specific heat capacity of the content wall thickness and thermal conductivity of the material and packaging heating temperature (temperature difference), heated area and area output A phase change from solid to liquid, for example, can considerably prolong the heating duration. Otherwise, good thermal convection in the container, e.g. supported by a stirrer, can noticeably reduce the heating time. 4 Advantages 1. Light, compact, low-cost A heating mat only weighs a few kilograms, and may easily be rolled up for storage when it is not needed. The investment is significantly lower compared to a metal heating system or a heating chamber. 2. Practical and space-saving With a flexible heating mat, you can heat your containers directly wherever they are set up, since only a little space is required. The containers can easily be transported with heating mats mounted on them. 3. Simple to use Every heating mat is completely equipped with mounting fixtures and all of the required components for secure and reliable operation, such as a cable, plug, thermostat, etc.. With just a few simple actions, the heating mat is attached to the container, and can be removed again just as quickly. 4. Flexibility and a perfect fit The flexible heating mats fit to the shape of the container to be heated. This also enables them to heat oval, flattened, or convex containers. A flexible heating mat keeps you on the safe side if the dimensions of your containers fluctuate, since the fasteners can be adjusted at any time. 5. Efficiency Direct contact between the heating mat and the container without any insulating layer of air creates a more effective and consistent heat transfer process through the wall to the contents to be heated. Integrated insulation (except for the WODS series) prevents unnecessary loss of heat to the surrounding environment and protects against high contact temperatures. 6. Fast delivery All heating mats are normally in stock (right to prior sales reserved). Delivery times for special sizes on request. 7. Safety and quality All of our heating mats correspond to applicable low-voltage and EMC guidelines, and they also feature the CE symbol. A detailed user guide is included. Our heating mats are handmade from high-quality materials and components. Robust manufacturing techniques ensure a long product life. All products are retested prior to shipping. We are certified according to ISO 9001:2008. Safety function: if the measuring system is accidentally destroyed (drop in capillary pressure), the thermostat switches off permanently. 8. Special sizes and special power ratings: Do you need to heat a specially sized drum or another container? No problem. We can produce heating mats in any special size, even just 1 unit. 5 SELECTION OF THE RIGHT HEATING MAT The drum type is crucial for selecting the right heating mat! Plastic drums Plastics are generally poor thermal conductors. Polyethylene (PE) commonly used for plastic drums has a thermal conductivity of approx. 0.5 W/mK, whereas steel with 50 W/mK has a value around 100 times better. Leading manufacturers of plastic drums specify 70 C as the maximum temperature for a duration of 6 hours, such that the drum does not lose its mechanical values. As a result of the material properties and wall thicknesses, plastic drums are not suitable for heating. Instead, such packages should be heated e.g. in a suitable heating chamber and the temperature should simply be kept constant at the removal site using a drum heater. In order to ensure good heat transfer over the entire heated area, Winkler offers two types of drum heater: for cylindrical and non-cylindrical plastic drums. 20 WEXH series ATEX heating jackets with system approval Applications The WEXH type explosion protected heating jackets can be used in gas and dust areas zone 1/2 (gas) and zone 21/22 (dust) and are therefore universally applicable for diverse sectors and industrial applications (explosion groups IIC hydrogen and IIIC conductive dusts) with necessary process-related heating. Not suitable for zones 0 and 20. The fully electrostatically dissipative design means the operator of the ATEX system is always certain that no hazardous electrostatic charge can occur on the ATEX heating jacket and that charge is dissipated to ground potential immediately when the ATEX heating jacket is connected. The extended use for ambient temperatures from -40 C to +60 C indicates appropriately robust and special materials, which have successfully passed various additional tests and are therefore also suitable for outdoor use. 20 Drum and IBC Heaters
