3 RPORT WAST MANAGMNT POINT-CLAIR RANKS SCOND AMONG TOP-PRFORMING CITIS ON TH ISLAND OF MONTRAL Thanks to proactive City policies and shared efforts to promote sustainable development, Pointe-Claire generated 17,059 tonnes of waste in 2016, the majority of which (64%) was reclaimed, recycled, or reused. Here are the results for the main collections: WAST 2020 OBJCTIVS Organic waste Recyclables Construction materials, renovation debris, and bulky items Recovery rate of 60% Recovery rate of 70% Recovery rate of 70% 2015 RSULTS Recovery rate of 55% Recovery rate of 74% Recovery rate of 66% 2016 RSULTS Recovery rate of 55% due to: the distribution of free composting bins and kitchen cones; the information session. Recovery rate of 76% due to: the collection of recyclables on public property; the new permanent collection point for polystyrene. Recovery rate of 77% due to: the door-to-door collection of bulky items; cocentre days; unlimited access to cocentres in the agglomeration of Montreal. 4 GNRAL INFORMATION HOW TO PLAC YOUR BINS OR CONTAINRS 1 Your rolling bins, waste containers, bags of leaves, and bulky and upholstered items must be placed at the end of your driveway, after 6 p.m. the day before the collection or before 7 a.m. on the day of the collection itself. 2 The wheels and handles of the rolling bin should face your home. 3 There should be a 30-centimetre (1-foot) free space around the rolling bin. (67 kg) 360 litres lb. (100 kg) PRVNT NUISANCS 1 Keep your bin in good condition Wash your bin by spraying the outside and inside with white vinegar, then rinsing. It s important to let your bin dry before putting waste into it. 2 Keep your bin out of the sun and put it out every collection day, regardless of how full it is. Keep the bin closed at all times. FOR TH ORGANIC WAST COLLCTION: 3 Alternate between food scraps and dry materials Layer them separately in the bin and wrap your leftover meat, chicken, or fish in newspapers before putting them in the bin. 4 Place your leftover meat, chicken, or fish in the freezer or refrigerator until the day of the collection. 6 ORGANIC WAST MONDAY Weekly collection Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. INSTRUCTIONS: Only 80-, 120- and 240-litre green rolling bins from the City are accepted. To obtain a second bin, contact Public Works at or tp@pointe-claire.ca. The green rolling bin must not weigh more than 150 lb. (67 kg). The cover of the bin must be completely closed. Only organic materials placed in the rolling bin will be collected. Leaves placed in the green rolling bin are accepted in the collection. Bags of leaves are picked up only during the seasonal leaf collection (details on page 8). Only evergreen branches shorter than 1 metre in length and less than 5 cm in diameter will be picked up. They must be placed in the bin. Plastic bags, even if they are identified as compostable or biodegradable, are not accepted. 7 KITCHN CON HOUSHOLD COMPOST BIN RAIN BARRL Get a free kitchen cone: it s a simple, effective way to collect food scraps using newspapers sections or advertising flyers. A larger size is available for multi-unit residential properties. Get a household compost bin for $25 and make your own compost from yard waste and some types of food scraps. ach residence can have a maximum of three household compost bins. Get a rain barrel for $40. You ll be able to wash your car or water your garden without using drinking water. ach residence can have a maximum of three barrels. Available at the multiservice counter at City Hall, open every Thursday until 7 p.m. MULTI Card required* CHILDRN S BOOK: LONARD S COMPOSTING ADVNTURS A children s book created by the City that tells the story of a young boy and his cat as they learn to compost thanks to Mr. Compost. The book is available for loan at the Library and can be purchased at the multiservice counter at City Hall for $5. Coup de cœur honourable mention at the Quebec Waste Reduction Week Municipal Challenge * The MULTI Card, available free of charge at the Library, Aquatic Centre, and City Hall, is a proof of residence that you can use to register for all City activities and access a range of City services, including the cocentre and distribution of trees, rain barrels, kitchen cones, and household compost bins. 8 SASONAL LAF COLLCTION MONDAY Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. SPRING FALL April 16 and 30 October 22 May 14 and 28 November 5 and 19 June 4 and 18 December 3 and 10 There will be the usual organic waste collection on these days, and you will also be able to put containers and bags filled with leaves at curbside. ACCPTD CONTAINRS: 80-, 120- and 240-litre green rolling bins provided by the City any reusable container with a maximum volume of 100 litres cardboard boxes paper bags (with or without cellophane) Plastic bags, even if they are identified as compostable or biodegradable, are not accepted. Leaves are also accepted as part of the weekly organic waste collection. They should be put in the green rolling bin. BRANCH COLLCTION ON RQUST May 1 to October 31 Do you want to get rid of hardwood or evergreen branches? You can request a collection for branches longer than 1 metre and 5 to 20 centimetres in diameter. Allow 21 days for this on-request collection. Branches cut off by a contractor hired to prune or fell a tree are the contractor s responsibility. Please note that logs and stumps will not be picked up during the on-request branch collection. Contact Public Works: tp@pointe-claire.ca LAF AND GRASS RCYCLING Leaf and grass recycling are ecological practices that involve leaving shredded fallen leaves and grass clippings on the ground after mowing so that they can break down into the soil. Leaves and grass are natural fertilizers! 8
9 RCYCLABLS MONDAY Weekly collection Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. INSTRUCTIONS Only 80-, 120-, and 360-litre blue rolling bins from the City are accepted. Only recyclable materials placed in the rolling bin will be collected. The cover of the bin must be completely closed. Containers must be rinsed before you put them in the bin. ACCPTD MATRIALS PAPR / CARDBOARD boxes: cereal, tissue paper, frozen foods, detergent, shoes, etc. cardboard tubes and rolls flat and corrugated cardboard, folded or cut-up cardboard boxes newspapers and circulars paper bags paper (including paper with staples or ink) envelopes (including those with windows) telephone directories, catalogues, magazines PLASTIC / GLASS / MTAL Bottles, containers and jars (with or without labels)* Lids and caps Plastic bags (that are not identified as biodegradable or compostable)** Metal cans, aluminum beverage cans, aluminum plates Milk and juice cartons, including Tetra Paks Plastics numbered 1 to 5 and 7; look for the following symbol on the container or packaging to make sure it can be recycled: * Remove lids and caps before placing them in your bin. ** Put all your plastic bags in one bag this will make it easier to process them at the sorting centre. 9

Otherwise, it will be sent to the landfill. NON-XPANDD POLYSTYRN (NUMBR 6 PLASTIC): PILOT PROJCT COMPLT Starting May 1, 2018, you must place non-expanded polystyrene (number 6 plastic) in the household waste collection again. Our partner in the project is currently analyzing the procedure, and the City remains open to the possibility of a permanent recovery system. Thank you for your cooperation in this sustainable development project. 10
11 HOUSHOLD WAST TUSDAY Collection every other week* Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. NW FROM JUN 5 TO AUGUST 29: Weekly Collection Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. SCTOR A TUSDAY / SCTOR B WDNSDAY For the summer of 2018, we are returning to weekly household waste collections to determine their impact on the environment. *Given land use, multi-unit residential properties have collections every week. SCTOR MAP SCTOR A The entire area west of Saint-Jean Boulevard and the entire area south of Highway 20. A SAINT-JAN BOULVARD B SCTOR B The area that is both east of Saint-Jean Boulevard and north of Highway 20. A HIGHWAY 20 INSTRUCTIONS Only household waste placed in a closed container or rolling bin will be picked up. MANUAL COLLCTION Waste may be put in a reusable plastic or metal container, or a rolling bin, with a maximum volume of 100 litres per container or bin. The maximum weight for each container or bin is 55 lb. (25 kg). A maximum of 360 litres of household waste per door will be picked up at each collection. MCHANICAL COLLCTION Waste may be put in a wheeled, reusable plastic container with a maximum volume of 360 litres. The rolling bin must not weigh more than 220 lb. (100 kg). Only non-recoverable waste is sent to landfills. ACCPTD MATRIALS appliances containing halocarbons (refrigerator, freezers, air conditioners, water coolers and dehumidifiers) computer equipment and electronic appliances motorized equipment (without fuel) household and bulky items sports equipment upholstered items (couches and mattresses) crystal, porcelain, ceramic excavation materials* household and electrical appliances ferrous and non-ferrous metals* tires and rims (separated) construction and renovation materials* remains of hardwood trees (branches, bark, chips) soil, rocks and sand fabrics and clothing *Maximum size: 2.4 metres x 1.2 metres ACCSS TO ALL COCNTRS IN TH AGGLOMRATION This is a service provided free of charge for a yearly maximum of 12 cubic metres. 13 BULKY ITMS: DOOR-TO-DOOR COLLCTION WDNSDAY Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. April 4, May 2, June 6, July 4, August 1, September 5 and October 3 Bulky items are non-upholstered items that are too big to be put in a bag, box, or garbage can. These objects are recovered and reclaimed. INSTRUCTIONS Items should not weigh more than 100 kg (220 lb.), and the maximum acceptable size is 1.8 metres (6 feet) by 1.2 metres (4 feet). Sharp or potentially dangerous items must be made safe. For each household or multi-unit residential property, there is a maximum of 10 items, or the equivalent of 5 cubic metres, per collection. Whenever possible, materials should be tied up together. For each household or multiunit residential property, there is a maximum of 10 items, or the equivalent of 5 cubic metres, per collection. Whenever possible, cushions should be tied up together. Some furniture stores will pick up your furniture and upholstered items when delivering new items. Ask about it! All decorations must be removed. The tree must be placed horizontally in the snow, near the road, the day before the collection or before 7 a.m. on the day of the collection itself. Trees are accepted up to the following maximum sizes: Trunk diameter: 13 centimetres (5 inches) Height: 2.5 metres (8 feet) Collected trees are turned into wood chips or compost.
