AIR MANAGEMENT APPLICATION GUIDE FOR» INNOVATIVE VAV DAMPER WITH ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGY
UltraSound Technology by FläktGroup LOW NOISE GOOD INDOOR AIR QUALITY FLEXIBILITY ACCURATE & VERSATILE ENERGY EFFICIENT MAINTENANCE FREE OUR ULTRASOUND INNOVATION Ultrasound is a natural technique used by bats and dolphins, for instance. It s an effective way to analyse what s around you without seeing or touching it. In our innovation we have adapted ultrasound to analyse what happens with the air flow inside a ventilation duct. Precise sensors and clever algorithms gives us a very detailed image of the air stream by studying how sound waves are affected by the moving air. 2
INNOVATIVE VAV DAMPER WITH ULTRASOUND BRINGS UNMATCHED BENEFITS TO A WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS FläktGroup OPTIVENT is a trusted line of VAV dampers that have been optimized with the latest cutting-edge innovation. With advanced airflow analysis based on ultrasound technology we now present a new dawn for Demand Controlled Ventilation. A landmark innovation setting aside traditional challenges for VAV dampers; Noise, turbulence and pressure drops in the airflow. Dust buildup affecting measuring precision, contaminating the air and requiring maintance. also offers unique benefits for builders, property owners and construction companies in more aspects. It avoids traditional risks and disadvantages in VAV systems and leads to simplified design, installation and commisioning, bringing lowered life cycle costs and an unprecedented level of air comfort as well. OPTIVENT ULTRA by FLÄKTGROUP 3
OPTIVENT ULTRA AND DEMAND CONTROLLED VENTILATION FOR INDOOR AIR QUALITY & COMFORT Today we spend over 90% of our time indoors. In order to reduce energy consumption, buildings are becoming more airtight. This means well planned ventilation and indoor air quality is more important than ever before. Not just for comfort reasons, but also to enable us to perform to our best. To learn more at school, to get well sooner in hospital and to be more productive at work. A Demand Controlled Ventilation (DCV) system detects momentary demand on ventilation and adapts to provide what s needed no more, no less. Doing so requires precision and flexibility from both system and components. as Variable Air Volume damper fits at the heart of any DCV system, adding further comfort benefits to the installation. Improved indoor air quality positively affects productivity. Increasing fresh air rates from 12 l/s to 24 l/s per person, has shown to reduce short term sick leave by 35%. Doubling the outdoor air supply rate in classrooms (in a range from 3 to 9,5 l/s per person) would improve the performance speed by 8 14%. 4
26 l/s PRECISE AIR VOLUME The measuring precision of our Ultrasound technology means that exactly the correct amount of air is supplied at any given moment. Not less, impairing comfort or health. Not too much, causing draft and unneccesary energy consumption. LOW SOUND LEVELS The sensor free flow measurement causes no noise inducing turbulence. A low flow resistance also requires lower pressure, which also limits noise levels. 8 l/s VERSATILE Ultrasound technology has the big advantage of being without any physical sensor inside the air stream. That means less risk of dust build-up a big advantage in many applications. FLEXIBLE WORKING RANGE OPTIVENT is constructed for optimum performance, from a minimum flow with delicate control to a maximum without turbulence or pressure drop from measuring air flow. 65 l/s TEMPERATURE & CO 2 IN CONTROL Thermal comfort and low CO 2 levels are crucial demands on indoor air climate. A narrow comfortable range of only a couple of degrees C require precise control, while the demand for fresh air means that CO 2 level must be controlled carefully. HUMIDITY Well controlled humidity levels is a less noticed air quality requirement. Unbalances still causing comfort issues like irritation in eyes, nose and skin and secondary effects like static electricity. is perfect for good comfort because of longterm control precision in DCV and low noise levels. 5
SOLVING THE CHALLENGES OF DEMAND CONTROL VENTILATION WITHIN ENVIRONMENT, ECONOMY, INSTALLATION AND RELIABILITY Nearly zero-energy buildings are the future, but it s a very near future. All new buildings must meet the standard by 2020, public buildings already The solution for ventilation goes in the footprints of automatic lights, switching on when we enter a space and off when we leave it. As ventilation requires even more energy than lighting, it makes sense to only deliver costly treated air when we need it and, where we need it. And that s the goal of DCV, Demand Control Ventilation. Adapting the ventilation provided exactly to the momentary need is a clever thought. It requires some additional hardware, like sensors and dampers, and refined controls that manages the system. But the increased investment has a short payback-time, when large energysavings lowers costs longterm and at the same time benefits the environmental aspects. Demand controlled ventilation is therefore growing heavily year by year. At the same time the challenges for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance are increasing too. OPTIVENT ULTRA simplifies tasks for every stakeholder. Compact to install, easier to control is extremely neat to fit into buildings as it requires much less space than traditional dampers. The ultrasound technology measures the entire cross-section of the airstream, which makes it unsensitive to turbulence. It means that you no longer need safety distances around bends and T-pieces. A DCV system with VAV dampers can now easily be accomodated, also in existing buildings with limited space. is also an adaptable component in any DCV system, with Modbus communication as standard equipment. 6
Less energy costs, lower maintenance requirements PROBABILITY OF THE OCCUPANCY DCV TIME Example of classroom occupancy and energy savings Constant air volume (CAV) ENERGY SAVINGS AVOID EXCESS WITH DCV TO REACH THE GOALS Employing Demand Controlled Ventilation is a smart way to save energy. When you adapt the air supply to momentary demand, energy can be saved without any sacrifice. The trick is to sense demand in temperature and CO 2 -levels and adapt the ventilation. A simple task with smart controls - made even simpler with as VAV damper. AIR FLOW As part of a Demand Control Ventilation system, OPTIVENT ULTRA is contributing to a operating cost with sound figures. With ever growing energy prices the calculation done yesterday very quickly gets better and better for each passing day. But contributes to longterm economy also in it s own right: Measuring air flow in the system by means of ultrasound is more precise, which means less energy consuming air flow, heating and cooling is made in excess of demand. With the ultrasound measuring technology, no physical pressure sensor inside the air stream causes turbulence and pressure drops requiring higher fan drive. Traditional pressure sensors will over time collect dust. The dust build-up affects both precision and pressure drop, causing unneccesary energy costs. To avoid this, regular cleaning is required. Without physical sensors, ultrasound lowers this maintenance cost too. (And when ductwork is brushed for regular cleaning, ultrasound sensors are completely unaffected) Investment 10% Count on saving with Maintenance 5% A system for Demand Controlled Ventilation, based on dampers is a good choice made even better with the advantages of ultrasound taken into account. Energy 85% LCC SAVINGS vs. traditional VAV dampers COST INVESTMENT IS THE SMALL PART if you consider a typical ventilation system, where it constitutes only around 10% during it s life cycle. Trad. VAV damper with static meas. Trad. VAV damper Cooling 30% Lighting and tecnical installations 10% Trad. VAV damper with T-sensor Trad. VAV damper with static meas. Trad. VAV + T-sensor Trad. VAV damper LCC savings vs. traditional VAV dampers Extra design, installation and commissioning costs vs TIME LCC SUMS IT ALL UP. When you take into account all the costs during a VAV-dampers lifetime, is in it s own class; Lower investment than a VAV-damper with static measuring and lower design and commissioning costs than VAV-dampers with T-sensor. Compared to a simple, traditional VAV-damper it has only a small initial price disadvantage, very soon compensated by outstanding operating costs. Ventilation 30% Heating 30% ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN BUILDINGS is possible to address to a large extent with an efficient ventilation system, as much of the costs are affected by it. 7
Invisible technology for concrete benefits In the continous efforts to develop our products and solutions we have always tried to think outside the box. For control of VAV dampers this has taken a very concrete turn. We wanted to be able to measure the air flow, with precision, from outside of the air flow. We realised it would give us a number of substantial benefits, both in the basic performance of the unit and during long term use. After several years of development at our research centre in Finland we have realised the technology in a landmark innovation for VAV dampers with several patents pending. No physical Sensor inside the airstream that collects dust, induces noise or affects the airflow, leading to turbulence and pressure loss. With Ultrasound we can detect without causing unwanted effect The development of ultrasound technology for air flow measuring is derived from a couple of physical facts. Sound waves are sensitive detectors with limited effect on the subject, a property giving us clear images of unborn babies. But sound waves are also sensitive for air movement. Try for instance shouting against the wind. DETECTION METHOD When analysing air movement with ultrasound waves, several methods can be used. We have chosen to use a technique called beam drift. The basic physics we use, are sound waves radiating from a sound source. They are invisible, but behave the same way as the uniform circle of ripples on water around a dropped pebble. In the case of sound waves the circles will drift off with the wind. UltraSound Technology by FläktGroup 8
Ultrasound technology * means much more compact installations, requiring no extra safety distances around the Damper. Ultrasound technology * components transmit and receive ultrasound. The entire airstream is analysed with high accuracy in both low and high air speeds. Intelligent Controls sense temperature and analyse average air speed with carefully developed ultrasound algorithms, resulting in high precision data with long-term reliability. The control panel is easy to operate with an intuitive human-machine interface. Settings are simple to adjust and the digital display shows the current air flow in real-time. * Patented technology by FläktGroup WITH ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGY AIR SPEED IS ZERO When air inside the duct isn t moving at all, the sound waves radiating from the transmitter are perfectly uniform. The twin sensors on the opposite wall will read the waves exactly at the same time, without any phase shift. AIR SPEED IS LOW When air moves at a low pace sound waves start drifting which can be observed by measuring the phase shift between the two receivers. As the entire cross-section of the air stream affects the waves, even small movements are registered correctly. AIR SPEED IS HIGH At full power the wave drift is larger, causing a larger phase shift being measured by the sensors. In this case a physical sensor inside the air stream would have caused a considerable pressure drop and with an obvious risk of turbulence causing undesired noise. 9
ADVANTAGES OVER TRADITIONAL TECHNOLOGY WITH ULTRASOUND FOR VAV DAMPERS IN DEMAND CONTROL VENTILATION SYSTEMS Demand Control Ventilation is generally considered as the way forward for ventilation, when environ- BIG Traditional VAV dampers mental regulations, rising energy prices and higher demands for health and comfort come into play. Ways to overcome problems with traditional VAV dampers are in the spotlight, and now addressed by with ultrasound technology. The advantages are clear, making it an interesting option in new installations. But several properties also are beneficial when retro-fitting into existing buildings. SMALL Air flow range Accuracy Influence of disturbances BEATS traditional VAV dampers in a series of important aspects. Influence of dust etc. Pressure drop of air flow meas. Noise SPACE SAVING REQUIREMENTS MAKES INSTALLATION SIMPLER requires no safety distances to bends and T-pieces, as ultrasound measures the entire air flow, which makes it resilient to turbulence. The space savings in a typical installation are substantial. is also the same dimension as the tubes and there is no need to convert for smaller dimensions as it covers a wider air flow range with optimum performance. 10
improvements WIDE AIRFLOW RANGE ACCURACY DISTURBANCE-SAFE With precise control over measurement and no sensors affecting the flow, OPTIVENT ULTRA covers a big range, from 0,5 m/s up to 15 m/s depending on size. Ultrasound measuring is extremely precise in the whole air flow range. At the smallest flow (0,5 m/s) accuracy is +/- 8%, improving to +/- 4% at higher velocities. Measuring flow with ultrasound increases resilience. Even with damper directly after T-piece or bend, the level of measuring precision is still good. WITHSTANDS DUST NO PRESSURE DROP LESS NOISE Without any pressure sensor inside the airflow, is not sensitive to dust, that can impair accuracy. Pressure drop for measuring air flow is zero with because there is no sensor in the airflow. This saves energy when fans need not compensate with increasing drive. Lower required system pressure and no turbulence around physical air flow sensors means noise is minimized and limits the need for space consuming silencers. surpasses traditional solutions in many fields and enables DCV in many buildings. LOW NOISE GOOD INDOOR AIR QUALITY FLEXIBILITY ACCURATE & VERSATILE ENERGY EFFICIENT MAINTENANCE FREE 11
THE DEMANDS MAY VARY BETWEEN APPLICATIONS BUT IS ALWAYS THE RIGHT CHOICE With a solid set of advantages compared to traditional solutions, is likely to make itself useful in a wide range of applications only on it s own merits. As part of a Demand Control Ventilation system it plays it s part with grace, making DCV possible and producing benefits for both economy and environment. 12
General Planning tips and checklist Checklist and planning tips for your configuration Min air flow in the room: Necessary fresh air flow for good air quality (10 l/s per person or acc. to floor area 0,5 (l/s)/m²) Max air flow in the room: According to the required cooling capacity calculation Specify min and max air for the working instructions. Suppy air ducts: Dimension according to the max air flow utilizing pressure regain method, or use a velocity of less than 4 m/s at the beginning of a branch with the rest of the duct having the same size. (Dimensioning tool e.g. MagiCAD) Minimize pressure drop of the ductwork by low air velocities which means energy savings, flexibility for the future changes and low noise and functional adjustment. Extract air ducts: Dimension according to the max air flow utilizing friction method (<1 Pa/m). Symmetrical ductwork keep air flow in designed values with different situations. When unsymmetric situation then use pressure control damper, EMPA. dimensioning: same size as duct, because air flow range is big (0,5 m/s 15 m/s in the duct). Select a silencer with the selection tool SELECT. Different air flows and pressure drop of the damper can be simulated. Check air pattern with SELECT in case of min and max air flow so that there is not problem with draught and ventilation efficiency. SELECT Select a silencer with the selection tool SELECT. Different air flows and pressure drop of the damper can be simulated. 13
