Product Guide Product Guide PRODUCT GUIDE FAN TYPES SINGLE INLET This range of fans has been developed to provide reasonable volumes of air against resistances to flow greater than can be achieved from small tube axial fans. Compact overall dimensions have been achieved using forward curved, centrifugal impellers and two-pole (typical 28 rev/min) motors. The range has several fans covering flow rates from 2.8 litres/s (6ft 3 /min) to 13 litres/s (275ft 3 /min) and static pressures up to 5 Pa (2 in.w.g) for the largest unit. The models 21ATXL, 26BTCL and 26BTML are very small units particularly suitable where highly localised cooling and ventilation is required. Typical applications include heat sink cooling, vending machine ventilation, combustion air supply on domestic boilers and cool air circulation in refrigerated display cabinets. The 33BTFL, 4BTFL and 45CTL give very good flow rates for their size, the 45CTL giving over 82 litres/s (175ft 3 /min) at free discharge from a 117mm (4 5 8 in.) dia. impeller. The 4BTFL has been very popular in many variations for supplying combustion air for domestic and commercial gas fired units, and one special variant has actually been used for gas/air mixing in some cases. The 45CTL has been used in hand driers and the cooling of switchgear and servomotors. The 52BTXL and 57BXL are powerful units capable of relatively high pressure development and high outlet velocities. These attributes make them particularly suitable for special applications including materials handling, small clean air benches and tunnel ovens. Specific details on all these fans can be found on pages Inlet spigot/guard packs are available for the 4, 45, 52 and 57 sizes. SINGLE INLET SINGLE WIDTH The need for small powerful fans mounted in confined spaces such as ceiling voids led Airflow to develop this range of fans. They are effectively half of a conventional double inlet double width fan which allows for both vertical & horizontal mounting. The powerful 14 rev/min. motors are resiliently mounted in the inlet of the fan and can be speed controlled to match fan performance to actual demand. The range, comprising five models offers flow rates between 5 & 75 litres/s. (15 & 159ft 3 /min) and useful pressure development up to 45Pa. (1.8 in.wg.) for the largest size. Specific details of these fans can be found on pages ACF COMPACT This range is a family of quiet, high performance centrifugal fans designed with ease of installation in mind using powerful, efficient and reliable external rotor motors. With a very compact, narrow profile they are ideal for integration into many applications requiring unobtrusive air movement with the minimum of system disruption. There are six fans in the range, from the ACF 12x62 with a free air flow of 8 litres/s. (17ft 3 /min) to the ACF 18 x 75 offering 158 litres/s. (335ft 3 /min) The powerful ACF 16x62 is capable of developing pressures up to 6 Pa (2.4 in.wg.) Installation is simple with the dynamically balanced motor/impeller assemblies providing long term performance. Ideally suited for applications where space is limited but where system resistances to flow demand good pressure development. More details on this group can be found on pages

PRODUCT GUIDE STOOL-MOUNTED A range of robust single inlet fan suitable for commercial and light industrial use in general ventilation and cooling. The construction is of a fabricated steel fan housing incorporating aluminium or steel forward curved centrifugal impellers. The fans are directly driven by totally enclosed fan cooled motors which are mounted on a platform or stool. The stools have holes incorporated in their feet for the purpose of locating the fans. The ten fans in the range, from the 52DS giving 188 litres/s (4ft 3 /min) at free air to the 126HW giving 1792 litres/s (38ft 3 /min) are all available with three-phase motors with the smaller seven, 52DS to 9 GW inclusive, also available in single-phase. A wider range of performances are achieved from these units as generally a choice of different speed options is available (except 52 DS and 57 DT models). Speed control by voltage variations is not possible on single phase versions. However with these types of fans, mechanical dampers are normally used. Although robust, these fans are not intended for handling explosive, inflammable or corrosive gases. Each fan is available in eight different handing and discharge positions (see p37 for details). However, availability varies, so please see our price list. Specific details on all these fans can be found on pages Also please see p37 for information on spigot/guard packs for this range. Product Guide DUPLEX The duplex or twin scroll fan units are basically two fans driven from a common motor which has a double shaft. The purpose of this design is to provide air across a broad front, for example a water to air heat exchanger. They have an inherent advantage over the Crossflow (or tangential) fan in that the forward curved centrifugal impellers have a better pressure development characteristic. This is important when a fan of low profile is required because of restricted space, but high resistance must be overcome, for example, in electronic cabinets where high packaging density is often encountered. The two smallest fans in this range, the 4BTX and 4B2TX are particularly useful in equipment cooling and in 19 inch racks. The powerful two-pole dual voltage motors enable the fans to give volume flows of 59 litres/s (125ft 3 /min) and 14 litres (22ft 3 /min) respectively, at 15 Pa (.6 in.w.g). The other four fans in the range are duplex fan decks where the motor is resiliently mounted onto a plate, which also supports the outlet flanges of the two fan housings. These provide high air performances from slim low profiles. They are intended for use in high quality ventilation systems and air conditioning units, air curtains, fan convectors, clean room benches etc, and are particularly useful wherever air must be delivered across a broad front to effectively cover heat exchangers or filters. Generously sized 4-pole (13 rev/m) motors of the permanent split capacitor type are used on these fans and they are suitable for speed control by voltage reduction. Specific details on all these fans can be found on pages

Product Guide Product Guide PRODUCT GUIDE DOUBLE INLET, DOUBLE WIDTH A range of fans originally developed from the demands of the Domestic Warm Air Market where large volumes of air at low outlet velocities are required from very compact units. Above all, these units have to be very quiet to suit the domestic environment. Since then, larger, more powerful units have evolved to meet the needs of overcoming greater system resistances. The range now covers nine fans, from the small 64E2SR giving typically 95 litres/s (2ft 3 /min) against 57 Pa (.23 in.w.g) to the 12H2WL/4 providing over 168 litres/s (356ft 3 /min) at free discharge. All the fans feature two large inlets and a generous outlet, which, combined with low impeller speeds ensure that aerodynamic noise is kept to a minimum. Motor noise and mechanical vibration is reduced considerably by using a three-point resilient motor mounting. Five of the fans are super-quiet, for use where low running noise levels are critical, using motors running between 8 and 95 rev/m. These are the 64E2SR to 12H2WL. The three more powerful units, 76E2WL/4, 9G2WL/4 and 12H2WL/4 are suitable where noise is still an important factor, but higher system resistances are encountered, such as large complex duct systems or where high density filters are used. All the fans in this range can be speed controlled to give a variety of duties, by voltage variation. Specific details on all these fans can be found on pages ECM DOUBLE INLET DOUBLE WIDTH Airflow have developed a small range of powerful fans for the volume Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) market by incorporating energy efficient Electronically Commutated Motors (ECM s) into some of their well established quality double inlet, double width fans. The unique feature of these units is the ability to offer a virtually constant airflow irrespective of changes in system resistance (within certain limits). This is achieved by the programmable motor sensing changes in torque and reacting accordingly. Additionally the motor/fan combination can be controlled by, say, a building management system (BMS) to give a range of specific flow rates as required. For example, when the motor is configured to accept a 2-1 volt signal from a system, the flow rate will change in direct proportion to the change in signal voltage. The three fans currently in the range provide flows between 2 litres/s. (42 ft 3 /min) up to 12 litres/s. (254 ft 3 /min) for the largest 114H2W- ECM unit. This fan can maintain constant flow against static pressures between & 3 Pa. (1.2 in.wg.) For specifications and performance details see pages

PRODUCT GUIDE HIGH TEMPERATURE (HT) RANGE With many years experience of developing fans for handling hot air (including pioneering work on domestic fan assisted ovens) this range of five fans suitable for air, and combustion products from natural gas burning appliances, up to 25ºC. incorporate proven features to help ensure long reliable product life. The fans employ an intermediate cooling arrangement between the main impeller and motor to keep the bearings and windings within their temperature limits. Capable of performances between 1 & 13 litres/s (2 & 275 ft 3 /min) they are used in such applications as flue gas extract for commercial heating appliances including overhead radiant tubes and space heaters. Laboratory ovens and tunnel curing ovens also incorporate these units. A black flexible high temperature polyester paint finish is used to enhance both appearance and longevity. The detailed specification shown on pages illustrates the basic types. Production units are made to order with unique features such as bespoke outlet flanges to suit the needs of the Original Equipment Manufacturer. Product Guide FLUE DILUTION (GBDF & SSDF) RANGE Airflow offer a tried and tested comprehensive range of flue gas dilution fans, including stainless steel versions for enhanced corrosion resistance, which enable combustion products from gas fired boilers and water heaters to be discharged to atmosphere at low level. The concept of diluting the products of combustion for environmentally safe discharge is now well established, and this fan design meets the need of the majority of installations for appliances with input ratings of between 6 & 65 kw. There are significant advantages in using dilution fans instead of conventional flue stacks as they offer the opportunity for the flexible siting of boiler and water heaters within the boiler room, and the elimination of unsightly external, or expensive internal flues. Based on efficient and quiet double inlet centrifugal fans they are capable of overcoming the system resistance of flue duct runs, and, with the built-in flow switches safety is not compromised in the event of fan failure or flue blockage. For more details please see pages 3-31, but also contact Airflows Sales Office for a dedicated brochure. ECONOMISER The concept behind the Economiser is quite simple: use a fan in the roof void to blow back down to working level the warm air that has risen. This principle, known as destratification, results in increased levels of comfort for building occupants, but also offers significant savings in the cost of energy to heat the premises which can, depending on the fabric of the building and usage be up to 3%. Installation and operation are simple with a unit mounted thermostat sensing when the pre-set temperature is reached and switching on the fan. There are two sizes available both fitted with adjustable louvres for optimum circulation and minimum draught discomfort. The E1 is used in multiples based on one unit per 17m 3 of building volume* and the E2 for larger, higher buildings when one fan is used per 34m 3 of building volume* For more details on the use of these destratification fans see pages *based on recovering warm air from the top 1 4 of the building 4 times per hour. 7

STANDARDS & TECHNICAL DATA TECHNICAL GENERAL INFORMATION Airflow Centrifugal fans are ideal general purpose units for ventilation and cooling systems where ambient temperatures do not exceed 4ºC. Most models are designed for continuous operation at any flow rate from free discharge to no-flow conditions for full specifications see p Where you have two sizes of fans meeting the requirements of any particular application, then the larger of the two running at lower speed will give lower noise levels. Many of the fans offered can be speed controlled by voltage variation. See page 36 for information on the controllers which have been tested to be compatible. Please contact our sales office if advice is required on controlling these fans. Although more than adequately sealed and protected for general applications, these fans are unsuitable for handling explosive, inflammable or highly corrosive gases or gas/air mixtures. CONSTRUCTION Apart from the three smallest fans in the range, the fan casings (scrolls) are manufactured from zinc coated sheet steel components spot-welded together to provide a very rigid construction. The fans will be supplied with either a blue powder coat finish as generally illustrated or with a clean aluzinc coated finish. The high temperature (HT) range and GBDF flue dilution fans have a black heat resistant paint finish. The impellers are created from a continuous strip of formed blades which are roll-seamed and locked into the back plate and inlet ring to provide a rigid concentric impeller wheel. The materials used are aluminium alloy (5251) and zinc coated mild steel depending on size, and are sometimes used together to give the best combination of strength and lightness. Some larger sizes are dynamically balanced. The impellers are fixed to the motor shafts via zinc plated hubs and grub screws. On some larger sizes cast flanged hubs or keyway hubs are used. The motors used in the range of fans vary according to the fan size and the applications in which they are generally used. The small size single inlet blowers have motors face or flange mounted to the fan scroll. The double inlet fans have motors mounted in one of the inlets. These motors are resiliently mounted via small anti-vibration grommets in order to keep transmitted noise to a minimum. The stool mounted fans use foot mounted motors bolted directly to the stool of the fan. (See page 37 for handling and discharge information. Duplex or twin scroll units have motors either mounted directly to the fan casings (4BT and 4B2T) or resiliently mounted onto fan decks which in turn support the two scrolls. MOTORS All single inlet, double inlet and duplex units use single phase induction motors. The types used and their parameters are described with each fan type in the technical data section (pages 14 to 27). On the stool mounted fans, the motors used are totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC). Single phase versions are available together with the three phase models. Some of which can be wired either for star or delta supply. Motor insulation is normally to Class B or Class F specifications, meeting BS5 Part II requirements. All motors are rated for continuous operation. On stool fans, connections are made via terminals located under a cover plate, wiring arrangements are shown on a diagram inside the cover plate. Other fans in the range have either flying leads or terminal blocks for electrical supply connection to the fans. 8

Standards and Technical Data STANDARDS & TECHNICAL DATA MAINTENANCE The fans are generally designed for use in normal air conditions. Filters should be used where contaminants and dust burdens are in excess of atmospheric air. It is important that periodic examination, and, if necessary cleaning of the impeller is undertaken. This will avoid dust build-up on the blades which, if not removed, will impair the capabilities of the fan to move its designed air volume. MOTOR LIFE The motors used on these fans have been selected for their quality and reliability, and should give years of satisfactory life. However, because of variations in installed situations where duty cycle, temperature, humidity and dust burden can affect electric motors, it is not possible to quote accurately anticipated life. For example, excessive ambient temperatures not only affect the windings, but also the bearings. Thus, motors which are lubricated for life can suffer from evaporation of the lubricant and also breakdown of the shaft seals. thereby causing oil to migrate from the oil reservoirs if subjected to ambient temperatures above 4ºC. SAFETY As with any other type of moving machinery, fans can be dangerous. It is essential that before any fan is examined it must first be completely isolated from the mains supply. Please note that some fan motors are fitted with automatic resetting thermaloverload cutouts. These operate if the motor overheats for any reason. Naturally, once the motor has cooled down, they will restart; which re-emphasises the need to isolate the fan, even if it has stopped operating. Airflow fans are designed to be used as components in other equipment, and it is the installer s responsibility to ensure that rotating parts and electrical components are adequately protected. To comply with Health and Safety at Work regulations, this means that access can only be gained by using a tool. European Directives (a) Machinery Directive (98/37/EC) The standard range of fans are supplied with a Declaration of Incorporation, which indicates that these products are intended for assembly within machinery which have a declaration of conformity. Economisers and Flue Dilution Fans have a Declaration of Conformity (b) Low Voltage Directive (73/23/EC) and Directive on Electromagnetic Compatibility (89/EEC,92/31EEC) The fan specifically referred to in this catalogue conform to these directives Standards and Technical Data FAN CODING The bases of the fan coding are the dimensions of the impeller where the first two (or three) digits indicates the diameter and the first letters indicates the width. Where a figure 2 appears after the letter, this denotes a double width impeller. For example : Fan designation 83F2WL is a unit with an impeller inches (or 213mm) diameter and a width of inches (or 1mm) times 2 as the fan is of the double width type. The coding for all the standard sizes is as shown in the table on page 35 (IMPELLER section) The other letters are a reference to the method of construction and impeller/scroll combination, except the last digit which is L or R (LG and RD on stool fans). This refers to the handing of the fan, which is : L = Clockwise rotation when viewed on the motor shaft R = Counter clockwise rotation when viewed on the motor shaft OPERATIONAL CRITERIA Installation of Airflow fans is both straightforward and flexible. They are designed to be mounted with the motor shaft horizontal, (except single Inlet Single width range which can also operate with the motor shaft vertical) but with the discharge in any direction. In particular, the single inlet, double inlet and duplex fans are designed to be mounted by their output flanges or decks. Stool fans must be mounted down on a horizontal surface, via the feet of the motor stool. 9

Standards and Technical Data Standards and Technical Data STANDARDS AND TECHNICAL DATA System resistance The resistance to flow imposed on a fan by the system, e.g. filters, grilles, electronic components etc. is known as system resistance. Pressure drop or back pressure are also used to describe this. There is a square law relationship between the volume flow rate and the pressure from the fan required to achieve that rate. If it is required to double the air flow through a system, then a fan will be needed which develops four times as much pressure to drive the new double flow through the same system. Likewise, if only half the flow is needed then a smaller fan generating only a quarter of the original pressure would be needed. For further information please look at Technical Topic no. 2 on the AIRFLOW website at PREFERRED DUTY RANGE Airflow fans are fitted with motors adequately rated to permit operation anywhere between no flow and free discharge (except for the HT range of high temperature fans) However, optimum performance is achieved between 15% and 85% of the free air capability. TEST METHOD Airflow fans are tested for performance to BS 848: part 1: 1997/ ISO 581: The performance data has been corrected for air at 2ºC. and to the standard density of 1.2 kg/m 3. Laboratory performance curves for the fans shown in this catalogue are available on request. SPEED CONTROL The use of speed controllers can provide a degree of flow regulation on many of the fans shown. The amount of regulation possible is dependent upon there being a close match between the power needs of the fan and the output of the motor. Therefore where common motors have been used the degree of controllability can vary between models. Please contact our Customer Services if further information is required on any particular fan. Airflow offer a range of electronic controllers rated between 1 & 1 Amperes. They have been designed to minimise the induced motor hum often associated with thyristor devices. See page 36 for further details. AIR TEMPERATURE (a) single inlet fans Generally the maximum ambient temperature around the motor should not exceed 4ºC. Above this, the temperatures of the motor bearings and the windings may exceed their specified limits and cause a reduction in motor life. It is important to provide adequate space around the motor (including those with integral cooling Impellers) to allow heat to dissipate. (b) high temperature (HT) fans Whilst these fans have been designed to handle air at elevated temperatures up to 25ºC. it is essential that the ambient around the motor does not, as above, exceed 4ºC. (c) double inlet fans The motors are mounted in one of the inlets which take advantage of the cooling effect of the air being pulled into the fan. This allows the motors to be air over motor rated i.e. generally smaller than a mechanically rated equivalent. The ambient temperature of this air going over the motor must not exceed 4ºC. Note: when ambient temperatures approach ºC. or below there is likely to be a delay, while the motor warms up, before the fan achieves its design speed. If continuous operation at temperatures well below zero is anticipated, please check suitability as special lubricants may be needed (OEM quantity applications only). SOUND DATA The difficulty for the specifier of fans is that of comparing one manufacturer s information with another. The figures quoted in the data tables give a single figure for sound level (in dba) measured one metre from the fan inlet, when it is operating in the free air condition. This is a commonly used parameter for noise levels, so has been adopted to aid comparisons. USEFUL CONVERSION DATA VOLUME FLOW RATE 1 m 3 /s = 1 l/s = 36 m 3 /h = cfm = 6 m 3 /min 1 l/s = 3.6 m 3 /h = cfm =.6m 3 /min =.1 m 3 /s 1 m 3 /h =.5886 cfm =.1667 m 3 /min =.28 m 3 /s =.2778l/s 1 cfm =.283 m 3 /min =.472 m 3 /s =.472 l/s = m 3 /h 1m 3 / min =.1667 m 3 /s = 16.67l/s = 6 m 3 /h = cfm VELOCITY 1 m/s = ft/min 1 ft/min =.58 m/s PRESSURE 1 Pa =.1 mbar =.415 in.wg =.1197 mm.wg =.145 psi 1 mbar =.415 in.wg = mm.wg =.145 psi. = 1 Pa. 1 in.wg = 25.4 mm.wg =.361 psi. = Pa. = mbar 1 mm w.g =.142 psi = Pa. =.987 mbar =.3937 in.wg. 1 psi = Pa. = mbar = in.wg. = 73.7 mm.wg. 1

SPECIAL APPLICATIONS Special Applications Many variants on the standard fan range have been designed and manufactured to meet specific applications. This service is available to volume original equipment manufacturers where a minimum of 5 to 1 off are needed at any one time. The design of the fan casings and the method of producing impellers allows Airflow to combine a variety of fan blade widths to different diameters, and incorporate into the most suitable scroll. When combined with a motor of the correct speed and appropriate output power the customers specification in terms of flow rate and dimensional constraints can often be met. Thus if the specified flows, sizes and fan types are shown to be available within the overall range described in this catalogue, then Airflow s Engineers will be pleased to evaluate the needs and then offer potential solutions. In the first instance please contact the Customer Services Department, or forward the faxback on page 39 with preliminary information. To enable Airflow s personnel to advise on the best approach, the following information should be supplied if known. Volume flow Static pressure Electrical supply to be used Temperature of air to be circulated Ambient temperature Purpose of fan Any special requirements or environment Product Guide An indication of the diversity of applications for which Airflow Centrifugal Fans have been developed is given in the following examples: Directly driven fan for domestic cookers Duplex fan for medical isolation beds Slim fans for small air handling units Flue boosting fans Laser cooling fans Air circulation fans for laboratory ovens Cooling fans for transmission equipment Body dryer fan (after showering) Aeration fans for grain storage See page 38 for more information. 11

Single Inlet (single width) Single Inlet (single width) SINGLE INLET (SINGLE WIDTH) Single Inlet (single width) A range of five compact direct drive centrifugal fans with powerful motors mounted in the inlet to provide exceptional flow rates from a narrow profile. The fans are normally mounted from their outlet flange or via fixings on the non-inlet side to provide simple horizontal installation for shallow confined spaces such as ceiling voids. General Installation Conditions These fans are suitable for handling ambient air at temperatures up to 4ºC. and can be mounted with the motor shaft orientation vertical or horizontal. As the air passes into the fan over the motor, the maximum ambient of 4ºC must not be exceeded if overheating is to be avoided. The fans must not be used for handling explosive, inflammable or corrosive products, nor sighted in such environments. Typical Applications These fans were specifically designed for mounting into in-line duct fan boxes. With their shallow profile & powerful 4-pole (c. 13 rev/min.) motors they are eminently suitable for small air handling units and door curtains as they can overcome the resistance to flow of filters, heater batteries and long duct runs. Specifications: All models feature multivane impellers manufactured from aluminium or mild steel housed in cases fabricated from mild steel sheet. The motors are resiliently mounted in the inlets of the fan, giving the benefit of minimising noise & vibration as well as a compact assembly. Mounting the fan is either via fixing holes on the three-sided flange or from threaded inserts on the non-inlet side of the fan. The four larger fans utilise efficient permanent capacitor motors with ventilated enclosures, whilst the 64DSYR/4 incorporates a totally enclosed shaded pole motor. Electrical connection is made via terminal blocks mounted on the case side with, where fitted, capacitors pre-wired. For full technical data see chart on next page. 24 Double Inlet Double Inlet DOUBLE INLET Double Inlet Double Inlet, Double Width Fans A range of ten standard models designed specifically for applications where low noise levels are critical. Resiliently mounted low speed motors coupled with large fan outlets provide low air velocities the main contributor to quiet running fans. For installations where higher resistances to flow need to be overcome some versions are available with higher speed motors to generate more pressure capability. The fans are normally mounted from their outlet flanges which can be for either vertical or horizontal discharge. General Installation Conditions These fans are suitable for handling ambient temperatures up to 4ºC. and should be fitted with the motor shaft horizontal. If this temperature is exceeded there is a risk of the motors overheating and triggering the in-built thermal protection devices. The fans must not be used for handling explosive, inflammable or corrosive gases, nor sighted in such environments. Typical Applications Please see page 38 for examples of uses to which these fans have been put. Specifications: All models feature multivane impellers manufactured from aluminium or mild steel housed in cases fabricated from mild steel. Permanent capacitor motors have been specified for this range (except the 57FTQR) for their comparative efficiency and better speed & noise control. Outlet flanges with fixing holes for ease of installation are integral on each model. Whilst the 57FTQR is offered with flying leads for electrical connection the rest of the range have pre-wired capacitors mounted on the fan case side together with a terminal block. 26 ECM Double Inlet (double width) ECM Double Inlet (double width) ECM DOUBLE INLET (DOUBLE WIDTH) ECM Double Inlet (double width) ECM Powered Fans A series of double inlet double width centrifugal fans incorporating advanced Electronically Commutated Motors. These motors enable the fans to provide constant air flow through a system despite fluctuating pressures. This is achieved by programming the electronics of the motor to adjust its speed & torque so that the fan maintains a specified constant airflow through the system it is connected to. The program is set by Airflow Developments by testing the fan/motor combination across a range of static pressures. In the installed situation the motor s microprocessor will adjust the speed and torque to maintain the flow rate when the resistance to flow within the system changes, eg. Filters clogging up, varying wind loads on terminal devices. Additionally, the motor can be configured to accept the signal from an optional 2-1V dc controller to give a range of flow rates between programmed upper and lower limits. The adjusted air flow will be in direct proportion to the applied voltage. It follows that the fan can also be controlled from a building management system having such an output signal. 27 ECM DOUBLE INLET (DOUBLE WIDTH) General Installation Conditions The ECM s are designed for air over motor installations only and to operate within the temperature range 1-45ºC. (-6ºC. powered/non operating mode) The fans are normally mounted from their outlet flanges with the motor shaft horizontal.the motor bearings allow for shaft vertical operation, but in high humidity conditions moisture, anddripping water must not be allowed to enter the motor. Generally the Relative humidity range is 5% to 95% non condensing. As with other fans with conventional motors these must not be used for handling explosive, inflammable or corrosive gases, nor sighted in such environments. Typical Applications Like standard double inlet fans, uses include powered variable air volume (VAV) units, heat recovery equipment, small air handling units and heat pumps. Specifications: All models feature forward curved multi-vane impellers manufactured from aluminium or mild steel according to size. The cases are fabricated from aluzinc coated mild steel. The motors, based on brushless dc technology, have their drive electronics mounted in the motor which in turn is resiliently mounted into one of the inlets of the fan casing. The speed range of the motors is from 3 to 12 rev/min, they incorporate ball bearings and employ Class B insulation materials. Power (23V/1/5Hz) and control (24V a.c.) connections to the motor are via Amp sockets. It is recommended that power to the motor is continuous and that operation is controlled by the 24V a.c. signal. This can be a simple switch or thermostat or similar control device. Fan Performance Range The performance data shown gives an indication of the typical pressure/flow envelopes available from this fan range. Fan sizes and motor power combinations are selected to meet specific needs. Availability The matching of motor to fan and the programming of the motor is unique to each application, and is undertaken by Airflow Developments in conjunction with the Original Equipment Manufacturer for volume production. Typically minimum batches that can be supplied are 1 off. Maintenance Very little servicing is required providing the installed situation is as described above. The motor bearings are sealed for life and no provision is made for re-lubrication. It is recommended that the impeller is carefully cleaned annually, or more frequently where dusty conditions prevail. 28 Hot Fans Hot Fans HOT FANS Hot Fans High Temperature Fans A group of five direct drive fans especially designed to handle hot air or the products of combustion from gas burning appliances at temperatures up to 25ºC. An Intermediate cooling impeller positioned between the motor and the fan casing minimises the transfer of conducted and radiated heat to the motor bearings and windings. General Installation Conditions The fans are mounted either from their outlet flanges or from threaded inserts incorporated on the inlet face of the casing, with the motor shaft horizontal. The motors are efficiently rated to run the fans out to the free air condition, while the ambient temperature around the motor must not exceed 4ºC. These fans must not be used for handling explosive, inflammable or corrosive gases, nor sighted in such environments. Typical Applications This model range has been developed for the Overhead Radiant tube heating market, but the concept of using directly driven fans for handling hot air was pioneered by Airflow for the domestic and commercial catering oven markets when a radial bladed impeller interposed between motor and fan eliminated the problems of short motor life. Since that time hot fans have been used in applications such as Tunnel curing ovens for the shoe and automotive industries, laboratory ovens & packaging machinery. Please see page 38 for a general summary of where Airflow Centrifugal fans have been used. Specifications: All models feature aluminium or mild steel forward curved impellers directly driven by totally enclosed motors which have an integrated cooling impeller and guard arrangement. The motor on the 45BTF-HT is of the shaded pole electrical type, whilst the remaining units have motors of the permanent capacitor type. The fan casings are fabricated from zintec mild sheet and finished in a black polyester high temperature paint. Power connection is via 3-core cable. For full technical data see chart on next page. 29 HOT FANS Speed Control Normally the fan model is selected to suit a particular heating appliance rating, and therefore these fans are not designed specifically to be speed controlled. However if variable flow by voltage control is required this can be considered. Maintenance Very little servicing is required providing the installed situation is as described above. The motor bearings are sealed for life and no provision is made for re-lubrication. In dusty environments the main impeller and intermediate cooling impeller (& guard) should be examined regularly and cleaned as required to maintain performance and cooling efficiency. Availability & Variants Generally the fans shown in this section are made to order only, in quantity, for Original Equipment Manufacturers, giving due regard to their needs. Airflow will work in conjunction to evolve the correct variant that meets the application. Where flow rates greater than those shown are required, these could be met with larger impeller sizes and using stool mounted metric frame motors. Dependent on quantities required (usually minimum 25 off) possible variants to the basic design can include: alternative inlet & outlet fixings non-standard voltage opposite hand rotation to that illustrated cable plug connectors speed control capability budget version with open frame motor and plastic cover Hot Fans TECHNICAL DATA: Fan Model Supply Frequency Capacitor Max Start Max Max air Min Noise Speed at Weight Max Voltage value running current input flow static level max air ambient current (approx) watts pressure flow temp Volts Hz µf Amperes Amperes Watts Litres/s. 30 Dilution Fans Dilution Fans DILUTION FANS Dilution Fans A comprehensive range of dilution fans including Stainless Steel versions for enhanced corrosion resistance, which allow flexible siting of gas boilers rated between 3 kw and 65 kw input The concept of diluting the products of combustion from gas fired boilers is now well established, and the range of fans offered by Airflow Developments meet the needs of the majority of installations. The use of Airflow dilution fans offers a number of advantages over other types of fans and conventional flue stacks. Flexible siting of boilers within new or refurbished plant rooms. Eliminates unsightly external flues; and the need for expensive installation or refurbishment of internal flues. Efficient and quiet centrifugal fans capable of overcoming system resistance in flue duct runs. Safety of in-built vane switch for boiler shut down in the event of fan failure or blocked flues. High levels of protection with the use of stainless steel casings on enhanced corrosion resistance versions and Aluzinc coated steel on standard versions. Flue Dilution With the main advantage of avoiding the use of unsightly or expensive flues, regulations require that if the products of combustion are dispersed at low level, then the CO 2 content must be 1% or below. The Airflow flue dilution fans achieve this by introducing fresh air into the boilers discharge flue duct and diluting the flue gases. With the correct selection of fan for the boiler rating and the recommended flue duct layout the 1% CO 2 level will be met.by following the recommended installation, mixing of fresh air and combustion gases takes place before the fan inlet, within the fan and in the discharge section giving satisfactory and safe discharge at low levels. Correct installation also ensures a long and trouble free service life. However, on the rare occasion that a problem may occur with the fan or in the flue duct system the built-in vane switch is an important safety feature. The vane switch will cut out if the fan stops operating or if the duct system becomes blocked, thus shutting down the boiler. For normal operation this switch allows the boiler to fire when the fan is operating correctly and dilution air is entering the fan. The Range The Airflow Range of flue dilution fans is available in 5 sizes to satisfy the dilution needs of industrial and commercial boilers rated up to 65 kw (2,2, Btu) input. Each size is available in standard form (GBDF series) for atmospheric boilers and water heaters of circa 75% efficiency. Enhanced corrosion resistance versions (SSDF series) with stainless steel fan cases are also available for installation where regulations or the specification calls for stainless steel ducting, and, when higher efficiency boilers such as modular designs are likely to produce condensation. SSDF s are therefore strongly recommended for installations where condensation will occur. It is important when designing and installing a dilution system incorporating Airflow flue dilution fans attention be paid to the latest edition of the following standards and guides. (i) BS6644: 1991 Installation of gas fired hot water boilers of rated input between 6 kw and 2 MW. (ii) British Gas Publication IM11 flues for commercial and industrial gas fired boilers and water heaters. (iii) Department of Environment Chimney heights; Third Edition of the 1956 Clean Air Act Memorandum. (iv) The Institution of Gas Engineers Utilization procedure IGE/UP/1 Part 1 Flued Appliances. 3

DILUTION FANS Typical Installation The boiler is connected by a vertical flue to a header which is open to the outside air at both ends. One end of the header acts as the primary air intake for the dilution air and the other as the discharge. The fan is located on the discharge side of the header duct. Note, a draught stabiliser or diverter must be incorporated in the boilers primary flue, if not part of the boiler. Shown is a typical boiler house installation incorporating an Airflow dilution fan illustrating the requirements for satisfactory and safe operation. (i) Dilution Fans are intended for use in Boiler Rooms where the maximum temperature is to 4ºC at ceiling height. (ii) Ensure fan is sized to cope with system resistance of all ducts including motor side inlet duct if fitted. (iii) If motor side inlet is open to the Boiler Room, adequate ventilation must be provided to the Boiler Room. 32 Economiser Fans Economiser Fans ECONOMISER FANS Economiser Fans The recognised way to save you money The Economiser concept is very simple. Using the principle of 'hot air rising', the Economiser uses a quiet but extremely powerful centrifugal fan to take in the heated air that collects in the roof voids and re-direct it back to ground level. This process of destratisfication, as it is known, results in greater flow of air within a building to create a more comfortable environment, especially at the normal working height of 1.5/2 metres. More importantly though, when used as an integral part of or added to a heating system, the cost savings can be substantial potentially 3%. Warm in Winter Cool in Summer The Economiser is not only a cost-efficient addition to most heating systems but also improves working conditions by creating better air circulation. The Economiser can also be used during the hot and humid months as a ventilator, again by improving the circulation of air. In fact, the installation of the Economiser brings many benefits: SUBSTANTIAL energy savings of up to 3% (dependent on the structure of the building). Quick and easy installation Minimal installation costs Thermostatic control for optimum heat recirculation Adjustable louvres for efficient air distribution Minimum maintenance clean only Two sizes to suit many type of building halls, garages, factories, warehouses etc. Speed Controller A Speed Controller is available as an optional accessory to suit particular requirements by providing greater control when connected to the Economiser unit(s). For example, turn up the speed controller to maximum if an initial 'boost' is required to warm up the building but turn down to minimum for quieter operation during meetings, functions etc. or where people are stationary in their workplace for long periods of time. Calculation of units required Whilst exact figures cannot be given for specific savings since these depend on too many site variables (solar heat again, thermal properties of building, usage of doors and loading bays, efficiency of installed heating system, etc), the chart on page 33 gives an estimation of the potential energy savings when Economisers have been installed based on the following calculations. Economisers are installed on the basis of recovering warm air from the top quarter of the building and changing this air 4 times per hour. Thus the total volume flow required from the Economisers will be: (a) measurements in metres: Building length x breadth x mean height, in metres 3 /hr. Or:- (b) measurements in feet: Building length x breadth x mean height, in ft 3 /min. 6 Number of E1's required Bidg vol (ft 3 ) or Bidg vol (m 3 ) 6 x 1 17 number of E2's required Bidg vol (ft 3 ) or Bidg vol (m 3 ) 6 x 2 34 Installation Example The building size used in the BSRIA simulation (see next page) was 3 metres x 5 metres x 8 metres high using the above, calculations. The number of E1's required = 3 x 5 x 8 = 7 units (nearest whole number) 17 The number of E2's required = 3 x 5 x 8 = 4 units (nearest whole number) 34 The size of the building and the desirable locations of the units would determine which model to use. In this example 4 x E2's were selected. 32

ECONOMISER FANS BSRIA* Report extracted highlights Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations, undertaken in FLOVENT* were carried out by BSRIA* to evaluate the effects and performance of the Economiser units in a typical factory building. For the purposes of the exercise, the building measured 3m x 5m x 8m high and was heated by an intermittent direct fired heater, (of 1kW input) with an air flow rate of approximately 1. 7m 3 /s of heated air. All other influences (lighting, equipment etc.) remained constant. The graph below shows, for a wide range of applications, the percentage energy savings that are possible to achieve where a temperature difference can be measured between two heights. Thus, the higher the temperature difference between working levels and where the Economisers would be installed, the greater the potential heat recovery and, therefore, energy saving. For example, if there is a 6ºC temperature difference in a building where the Economisers would be installed at a height of 8 metres, then a potential saving of 21.5% is possible. (The graph is based on a building of typical construction with reasonable insulation). Obviously, whilst every building may vary, it clearly demonstrates that there are substantial savings to be made by recirculating the heat which collects at these higher levels. these figures, the 'stratification measurement' is over 7 C, which increases further at greater heights. Diagram 2. This simulation shows the same factory and heating system but with four E2 Economisers installed along the centre of the building. Using the same energy input of 1kW results in a greater flow of the warmer air, especially at the lower work levels. Compared to the above; the figures are 22 C, C and 25 C respectively, so reducing the stratification measurement to 3 C. Diagram 3 This simulation shows that with the Economisers operating, the heat input can be reduced to 86kW still maintaining higher temperatures at lower levels. Economiser Fans These destratification simulations are represented by the diagrams shown below, together with a brief description of the results. Diagram 1. This simulation demonstrates a typical factory environment where the Economiser units are not installed. At floor level, the temperature is approximately 18 C, rising to C at 1 metre height (i.e. approaching the normal work level) but increases to over 26.5 C at 7.75 metres height. Based on CONTOUR TEMP (celsius) The following extract from the Report s concluding statement summarises their findings: An example case has been simulated to show the effect of using destratification devices. This has shown the potential for increased internal temperatures at low level with greater uniformity throughout. Alternatively, energy can be saved with the heat given to the space being reduced." 34 Multivane Centrifugal Fan Impellers Multivane Centrifugal Fan Impellers MULTIVANE CENTRIFUGAL FAN IMPELLERS Multivane Centrifugal Fan Impellers Quality, reliability and versatility Wide range of sizes Single & double inlet impellers Available in steel & aluminium Designed for electric motor drive Application advice Proven designs The impellers used in the range of standard fans detailed in this catalogue are available for spares replacement purposes, but additionally, a large number of variants have been produced for Original Equipment Manufacturers both for complete fans and as impellers only*. From the basic building blocks of 16 diameters and 1 widths combinations can be created to meet customer specifications in terms of size & performance. The fan blades are formed in a continuous strip which is seamed rolled and locked into the backplate and inlet ring simultaneously to form a single width impeller. This means that concentricity and balance are held to close tolerances, giving smooth and reliable performance. Additionally some sizes are dynamically balanced depending upon the combination of speed and materials as well as diameter. Double width impellers are produced by mounting two single width impellers back-toback and securing with a clinched or flanged hub. The table opposite shows the dimensions and codings of the diameters and widths together with an indication of preferred combinations to produce efficient flow rates with effective pressure development. Airflow centrifugal impellers are manufactured from Aluminium or mild steel dependent on such factors as the width/diameter ratio, the rotational speed, motor starting torque and application. Generally sizes above 229mm (9inch) diameter operating at 14rev/min and above will be produced in steel. Additionally for larger sizes the standard clinched hub can be replaced by a flanged hub which is screwed to the back plate of the impeller. This is used where either a keyway is required and/or where motor shafts are of large diameter. With the range of diameters, widths, hub types, bore diameters, materials and handing many thousands of variants are available to the OEM markets*. Please see opposite for illustrations of the components referred to. *for special non-standard impellers 5 off is the normal minimum order quantity. Aluminium components are manufactured from coil material to EN 485/515/ H22. Steel components are manufactured from cold rolled coil or sheet steel grade 4 (CR4) electrolytically zinc coated. Clinched hubs are turned from mild steel bar and nickel or zinc plated. Flanged hubs are machined from aluminium alloy (LM4) castings. 34

Accessories ACCESSORIES Electronic Speed Controllers The Airflow range of fan speed controllers offers a good match for some of the centrifugal fans described in this catalogue, and have a number of useful features: Stepless speed adjustment Four current ratings to suit a wide range of motor powers Adjustable potentiometer for minimum speed setting Hard start for low ambient temperature conditions Flush or face mounting (except for 1 Amp. Unit). Slow blow fuses for current overload protection The controllers are electronic, incorporating a thyristor device to provide smooth air flow adjustment by voltage control, and are available with ratings of 1,3,6 and 1 amperes. The circuit allows for the variable adjustment of voltage, and hence fan speed, to be set via the control knob mounted on the fascia of the unit. Additionally an override switch for full speed (boost) can be operated without disturbing the set condition. The degree of control of the air flow rate is dependent upon the fan type and the resistance to flow of the system the fan is fitted to, but is typically down to about 5% of full voltage flow rates before some instability occurs. This minimum can be set with an adjustable potentiometer mounted on the circuit board. The table shows the recommended minimum voltage settings for those fans in the standard range suitable for use with this type of contoller. A hard start feature is also incorporated which allows the fan to start at full speed for approximately five seconds when powered up at a low speed setting. This is particularly usefull in cold weather conditions as the starting torque of the motor at low applied voltage may be insufficient to overcome cold bearing stiction. The Airflow speed controllers are compliant with the EC directive for EMC (Electro- Magnetic Compatibility) 89/336 Please note; not all fan/motor combinations allow for satisfactory speed reduction.
