Keeping residents informed about our programs and services A fresh new year The new year can be a time to reflect, rethink, and make new goals for improving yourself, your community and the environment. This edition provides some ideas, and links to resources to help kick start your fresh new year.

2 A checklist of resources Below are a list of resources to help refresh your reduce/reuse/recycling knowledge and actions! Download the free My Waste app to get collection reminders, and schedules all year long. U se the 2018 Waste Collection calendar (coming to your mailbox by February 1st). Review how to do the 2 blue box sort, or how to sort using the blue and grey carts (for multi- properties). residential Learn how to make or buy the correct liner bags for the Green Bin program. Improve your knowledge of our waste collection by-law and bans. Reduce and recycle more by using our programs or through local businesses. Avoid frozen green bins this winter Collection staff will empty your green bin as much as possible, but if some contents are frozen and do not empty out, they will leave a sticker on your bin. Below are some tips to help make sure all your organics get collected (and you don't get a sticker!): 1. Drain liquids before you put food scraps into your green bin. Tips: If you have grease (like from frying bacon), wait until the fat cools and congeals before putting it in the green bin. Do not put it down the kitchen sink or flush it. 2. Grease the inside of your green bin with vegetable oil. 3. Layer food waste between paper waste (such as shredded paper, or facial tissues). 4. Put a paper egg carton or paper take-out drink tray in the bottom of your green bin. 5. Do not set out your green bin the night before collection. Instead, set it out by 7 a.m. on your collection day to lessen the chances of it completely freezing.

3 6. If you use a green bin liner bag, loosen it from the sides of the bin when you set it out for collection. Do you have a winter green bin tip? Share it on social media. Blue Box blues: Items that are not acceptable We truly appreciate residents' enthusiasm to recycle all they can, but there are certain types of packaging that are not acceptable. Here is a list of common items that we see in blue boxes and recycling carts (at multi-residential buildings) which should be put in the garbage: chip bags diapers dishware, pots and pans drinking straws stand-up pouch bags Styrofoam meat trays waxed paper Unsure if an item is recyclable? Check our online search tool, Waste Whiz, contact our Call Centre at , available 24 hours a day, every day, or us.

4 Top 4 tips for winter set-out What not to do Do not set out white garbage bags since they are difficult to see. What to do Please use black or green garbage bags. Items set on top of snow banks are not accessible to collection crews, and can slide off creating litter, and safety issues for pedestrians and vehicles. Set items out at the end of your driveway or shovel out a "shelfie" in the snow bank.

5 We understand that you want to avoid items getting plowed in, but items set out on the sidewalk side will not be collected. Set items along the road side. Items that are snowed in cannot be collected. Keep items accessible and shovel them out if the plow snows them in. Tip: Set out your items by 7 a.m. on your collection day rather than the night before.
