2 2 Lagged pipe Lagging of pipe is required to prevent leakage of heat. The consists of three concentric pipes arranged between two supports. The gap between the pipes are filled compactly by two different insulating materials and heater is provided at the center of inner pipe, temperatures at various points is measured with temperature scanner. Heat input is measured by voltmeter-ammeter. The assembly is mounted on angle frame. Heat flow rate through lagged pipe can be determined and it can be compared with the heater input of known values of thermal conductiviyty of lagged material. Also, thermal conductivity of lagging material by assuming input to be heat flow rate through lagged pipe can be 38,600 3 Natural convectionvertical cylinder The consists of a brass tube fitted in a rectangular duct in vertical fashion. One side of duct is made up of Perspex for visualization. Electric heating element is kept in the brass tubes. The temperatures of the vertical tube are measured by seven thermocouples at seven points. This experimental setup is designed to study the Natural convection phenomenon from a vertical cylinder. The local heat transfer co-efficient along the length of the tube can be determined and the variation can be plotted. 34,500

3 4 Forced convection inside tube Heat transfer by forced convection is one of the most important heat transfer present in many engineering applications. The is designed to find out the value of heat transfer coefficient under the different airflow conditions. Heat is transferred from the heated test section of the pipe to the air flowing through it. The consists mainly of a centrifugal blower electrically heated test section, control valve to regulate air flow and an orifice and U tube water manometer for flow arrangement. Thermocouples are used to measure the pipe wall temperature and also the air temperature at inlet and exit. Average surface heat transfer coefficient for a pipe losing heat by forced convection can be Also heat transfer coefficient for different airflow rates and heat flow rates can be compared. 39,800 5 Composite wall The experimental set-up consists of test specimens made of different materials aligned together on both sides of the heater unit. The first test disc is next to a controlled heater. The temperatures at the interface between the heater and the disc is measured by a thermocouple, similarly temperatures at the interface between discs are measured. Similar arrangement is made to measure temperatures on the other side of the heater. The whole set-up is kept in a convection free environment. The temperatures are measured using thermocouples (J type) with multi point digital temperature indicator. A channel frame with a screw rod arrangement is provided for proper aligning of the plates. 4 6 Thermal conductivity of insulating powder The consists of concentric spheres made of copper. The inner sphere is a heater, and in between the spheres insulating powder is (Magnesium oxide) filled and sealed. There are two thermocouples fixed to the heater T 1 and T 2 and two thermocouples fixed on the inner wall of the outer sphere T 3 and T 4. A multi unit digital temperature indicator is provided to measure temperature at different locations. Thermal conductivity of insulating materials can be determined and variation of thermal conductivity with respect to temperature can be 29,040 7 Pin-fin The is designed to study the heat transfer in a pin type fin. The consists of pin types fin fitted in duct in suction side of the blower. Duct is provided with bell-mouth entrance. One end of the fin is heated by a heater and heat flows to another end. Orifice is fitted on delivery side of blower to measure the air flow rate. Heat input and temperature distribution along the fin is measured on control panel. The temperature distribution along the length of fins in both natural and forced convection mode can be studied. Also, comparison can be done between theoretical temperature distribution and experimentally obtained temperature distribution. 39,500

5 8 Stefan- Boltzmann The consists of hemisphere fixed to a Bakelite plate, the outer surface of which forms the jacket to heat it. Hot water, to heat the hemisphere is obtained from a heater in hot water tank, which is fixed above the hemisphere. The copper test disc is introduced at the center of hemisphere. The temperatures of hemisphere and test disc are measured with the help of thermocouples and temperature scanner. A timer is provided to measure the temperature of disc at the interval of 5 seconds. With the help of this setup, one can easily understand the phenomenon of heat transfer by radiation. Also, Stefan- Boltzman constant can be 37,500 9 Emissivity measurement This setup is designed to measure the emissivity of test plate. The test plate comprises of a mica heater, sandwiched between two circular aluminium plates. Black plate is identical with test plate, but its surface is blackened, both plates are supported on individual brackets in a wooden enclosure with one side perplex to ensure steady atmospheric conditions. A thermocouple is provided to measure the temperature of surrounding. Emissivity of non-black surface over a range of temperatures can be measured. 32,500

6 10 Parallel/Coun ter flow heat exchanger The consists of a tube type concentric tube heat exchanger. Hot fluid flows through inner tube and cold water flows over the tube. Direction of cold fluid flow can be changed from parallel flow to counter flow arrangement. Digital temperature scanner with thermocouples temperature measurement. Both parallel and counter flow arrangements can be studied on the same set-up with simple operations of valves. 34, Two stage reciprocating air compressor The simple reciprocating air compressor has a piston which reciprocates inside the cylinder wall and cylinder head. The piston is attached to the crankshaft with the help of a connecting rod and thus the rotation of the crankshaft causes the piston to move up and down inside the cylinder. The crankshaft is mounted on the crank case. The cylinder head contains valve pockets where the suction and delivery valve are fixed. Performance analysis of a reciprocating compressor can be done using this setup 89, Refrigeration test rig The works on simple Vapour compression refrigeration cycle and uses R134a as a refrigerant. It is environment friendly. The system is fabricated such that students can observe and study vapour compression cycle, its component principle & working. The arrangementof parts such that, all the parts are visible and working can be easily understood. Performance parameters such as refrigeration effect, coefficient of performance can be 90,800

7 13 Air- Conditioning test rig An air flow duct of size 45 cm x 30cmx 2m long with transparent windows on sidewalls supported at a height of 1 m on a movable trolley with castors. All measuring instruments and electrical controls are mounted on front panel attached to trolley. Refrigeration compressor and accessories are housed in trolley. The evaporator is mounted inside the duct. This test rig is intended to measure all the psychrometric properties of air like sensible heating, sensible cooling, humidification, dehumidification, by-pass factor cooling coil. 1,23, Fluidized Bed Cooling Tower The Fluidized bed cooling tower equipment consists of a 600 mm long Perspex column, 65 mm internal diameter, equipped with air and water flow. Ambient air is supplied by a centrifugal blower. Air flow rate is measured with an orifice plate of 24 mm diameter connected to a pipe diameter of 40 mm. The water is sprayed to the top of the column. The overall efficiency of the cooling tower and humidification efficiency can be 39,600
