2 MSU-Tollgate Evenings in the Garden Evenings in the Garden brings professionals to Tollgate to share with the public their expertise on a variety of topics. Attendees walk away with their gardening questions answered, and better understanding of how to make the plants around their home or apartment flourish. Some classes include a tour of the grounds, or a hands-on learning experience. 3 Meadow Brook Garden Club Berries, Bugs and Snags Gardening for Birds October 26, 2018 Meadow Brook Hall 350 Estate Dr. Rochester MI Coffee and refreshments will be served at 9:15 a.m. with program to follow at 10:00 a.m. Rosann Kovalcik, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Grosse Pointe Woods, Master Gardener and board member of the Michigan Audubon Society will talk about creating a garden with birds in mind. Learn how native plants provide essential habitat and food for birds. See photos of many different birds that you can attract to your yard. Guests are welcome and reservations are not required. There is a $5 non-member fee. His presentation will offer something new to learn for everyone. Oakland Conservation District 2018 Backyard Habitat Program For property owners who would like to learn from a local organization how to develop a backyard habitat for wildlife. To create the best habitat it is necessary to have knowledge of their property s soil. From this, you will then identify the plants that will enable the proper habitat for the wildlife you want in your backyard. You'll also learn to identify potentially harmful invasive plants/species. The entire course is only $75 and includes a personal consultation, comprehensive workbook, and a soil survey. You must bring a laptop or tablet to each session. Find out more or register at

4 MSU Tollgate PumpkinFest Harvest Time Fun & Learning Saturday, October 6th, and Sunday, October 7th. 11 a.m - 5 p.m. PumpkinFest is a free-admission, family-oriented event open to the public The event increases understanding of the importance of agriculture in our daily lives and includes many interactive elements to engage visitors, including: The MSU Bug House The Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum Living history reenactments Wagon rides to the U-pick pumpkin patch Free music concerts Children's Strawland Farm animals Story time Children's workshop Proceeds from parking, pumpkins, games, and food raise funds for financial aid, increasing the reach of our local educational programs. Here is the opportunity to continue your education by working side by side with seasoned gardeners. These smart and welcoming people are always happy to share their knowledge. Being a Tollgate volunteer has many advantages: participating in monthly programs with speakers, sharing your gardening experiences and making new friends. Garden workdays are every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until noon with a hot dog and potato salad lunch provided after the workday. Tollgate is a 160 acre "Oasis" located in the heart of Novi at the corner of Meadowbrook & 12 Mile Roads. Just look for the long white fence. Meadow Brook Garden Club Meadow Brook Garden Club maintains the gardens on the estate grounds of Meadow Brook Hall, 350 Estate Drive, Rochester MI gardening days are every Tuesday morning April 10 through October 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 Noon. All who are interested in gardening are invited to join in helping to maintain these beautiful gardens, designated as a Proven Winners Signature Garden. Master Gardeners and candidates will earn volunteer hours toward your Master Gardener required hours. Bring hand tools (pruners, trowel, cultivator) and any other gardening items that you normally use. Come and join us and meet fellow gardening enthusiasts. Experience is not required. 7 Meadow Brook Naturalists Meadow Brook Naturalists are a Meadow Brook Hall volunteer group dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the woodland areas around Meadow Brook Hall, The Naturalists are looking for volunteers to help restore the woodlands around the hall by removing invasive plants and planting native trees, shrubs and perennials. Workdays are usually on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 9 a.m. til noon. Meet by the garage in the courtyard. Please dress appropriately as we will be working in natural woodland/wetland areas that could have thorns or poison ivy. Close toed shoes/boots are necessary. Tools will be provided.
