3 THIS MONTHS MEETING: Auction & Potluck This year s annual auction & potluck will again be held at the Poot s on June 25 th at 6:00 p.m. If you wish to come early to tour the greenhouses then you may arrive as early as 5:00 p.m. or if it s too hot we can tour after supper. Please remember to bring a dish to share. The club will provide plates, silverware, & drinks. Please remember to bring your lawn chairs as well. This year we are again asking you to donate garden related items for the auction. Please remember that this is not a garage sale & in the interest of time & keeping interest in the auction, we would like to request that all items donated either be edible or of garden relation; like garden books, pots, pictures, garden gloves or clothing, tongs, birdhouses or feeders, plants, seeds, etc. Also, it would be a good idea to place a reasonable, minimum starting bid on your items if relevant, so our auctioneer will know where to start. Please remember that you are not there to always get a bargain, but to help support the club as well. JULY CLUB MEETING: The July Club Meeting will not be on our regular night, it will be held on Tuesday July 28th so that we will be able to have Woody Minnich do a program for us. Woody comes all the way from New Mexico & is doing a program for the Sacramento club on that Monday & has agreed to stay an extra day to do a program for us as well. The program will be Madagascar, Land of the Giants. He will also be bringing plants to sell & he usually brings several hard to find or rare plants. (209) nguidi24@gmail.com PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: by Dawn Dalyce Our first Modesto Cactus and Succulent Show and Sale was a success. We had quite a few customers, who seemed pleasantly surprised at the variety in the show, and the selection of things to buy. A few families stopped by with their children, and seemed thrilled to see bunnies, guinea pigs, chickens, kittens, tortoises, and peacocks. We sold nearly $1500 in plants, which at $1 - $5.50 for most, is a lot of sales. That is putting back most of the money that we needed for the projector and computer, if not all of it, by the time expenses come out. Roelyn will give us a final tally at the next meeting when she figures out the expenses. My hubby Ron tallied all of the receipts and did an excel sheet for her. Big "Thank You s", to everyone who donated plants, and came to help! It was so appreciated, and I just could not have pulled it off without you. It s really fun when the club gets together and makes something happen. We will have some left over plants to sell at our June Potluck and auction. Several customers were asking if we would be doing this every month. That was nice to hear, that they enjoyed it that much. I hope a few make it to our club meetings some time. Next year, if we can get a committee together, let s try to plan it for say late March or very early April, when the weather is cooler, and people are not going on vacation.

The mini show, held at the general meetings, is a time when you can bring your plants, to compete against other members plants. There are 10 categories: Cacti & Succulent, (Open, Advanced & Novice Divisions), Bloomers (anything in bloom, also three divisions) & Allied Interest (dish gardens or natural planters). You may bring up to 2 from each category. The forms for judging are available to take home so that you can fill them out prior to the meeting if you wish, or there will be some at the meeting as well. The plants are judged by the members attending that meeting; whoever receives the most votes wins that months mini show & will get their name in the next newsletter. The person(s) receiving the most votes at the end of the year will receive a gift from the club. WE ENCOURAGE ALL MEMBERS TO BRING PLANTS TO SHOW THROUGHOUT THE YEAR! FYI: The mini show categories are Novice - those with fewer than 5 years of showing in the mini-show. Advanced those who have shown for more than 5 years in the mini-show & does not sell more than $300 in plants a year. Open those who sell more than $300 in plants a year. 5 A COLORFUL MOSAIC: by Mary Dodder McCorkle and Genevieve Holloway The Cambria Shores Inn s coastal garden has grown into a work of art that echoes the Impressionists Cambria s Moonstone Beach boardwalk draws tourists and locals alike. One of the unexpected treats on this walk paralleling the ocean is a view of the Cambria Shores Inn and its coastal garden. Almost vertical in places, colors blend, fuse, twirl and beckon viewers along the boardwalk to cross the street and take a closer look. Like many paintings of the Impressionist era, views from both a distance and close up are intriguing. Like the elephant seals up the coast, it calls to you. Inn owners Leslie and Kim Eady continued a legacy of family ownership by passing along inn management and renovation duties to son Sean Wilkinson. Eldest son Nick Wilkinson, owner of retail nursery Grow in Cambria and Left Field in San Luis Obispo, is a garden designer and has overseen the garden transformation. We had a small budget for plants so everything we planted was small at first, he explained. People commented about the modest size of the plants and had serious doubts about our vision. The following year local garden clubs toured and were impressed by the growth and the beauty. It s such a blessing to have my family working here, Leslie Eady said. She and her husband bought the inn in Renovations began in Nick Wilkinson was an art major with an intense interest in plants and landscaping. He drew freehand sketches of how the garden would look after nearly an acre of lawn was removed. The turf was torn out down to bare rock. New soil was brought in and mounded to various heights. Additional rock came from local quarries. Cambria s water moratorium meant careful planning, so visitors would be comfortable and the garden would still thrive. Drought resistant double dwarf bonsai fescue turf and succulent plants filled the bill. Non-potable water from a well is hauled in once a week to irrigate small portions of the garden. That garden rarely gets watered. Before the moratorium we were watering five times a year. It just shows that you can have a dynamic garden and not have to water a lot, Wilkinson said. Gabriel Frank of Gardens by Gabriel installed the irrigation system and landscaping. Jan Moon, manager at Grow, comes in once a week to do detail pruning and cleanup for this showstopper of a garden. Adelaide stone planters front the rooms and raise the plants up for a closer view. They also form a viewing terrace off the entrance where guests can lounge in iconic turquoise Adirondack chairs. The Pacific, Hearst Castle, seabirds, surfers, otters, dolphins, seals and Leffingwell Point and the lighthouse at Piedras Blancas are all part of the view. Serpentine rock edging surrounds the planters, which brim over with an abundant variety of succulents; some shoot skyward and others scramble over the rocks and gravel. Several varieties of agave and aloe dominate the planters, which spill down the hillside to the street. One species of agave, called sharkskin, mirrors the texture of its namesake. Euphorbia's, sedums, Kalanchoe's and showy, ruffled pink Echeveria's fill in around the large, upright anchor plants. Large daisylike Aeonium's bring round softness and play well against the sharp edges of the pointy-leafed varieties. African daisies add their blooms to the color-filled mosaic. Leslie Eady said that every day someone mentions the garden and asks: What s this? The entire family is good about answering that question, although they do have some fun with it. Sean Wilkinson smiled as he asked, How do you like our giant asparagus? The specimen agave he was talking about is in the process of pushing up a bloom stalk that could ultimately reach 12 or more feet in height. Flagstones that are the size of large coffee tables offer pathways through the lawn and down the slope. Bright orange California poppies bring their good cheer to the spring art palette. Mr. Happy, a hybrid echium, puts up a 6-foot tall pink flower spike to demonstrate he also is really happy in this garden by the sea. He isn t the only one. I feel really proud of what Sean and Jan and I have done over the last year in reworking the garden. It s now a showcase that has all the beauty any garden would want to have year round, Nick Wilkinson said.

6 SUCCULENTS OFFER BIG DRAMA, COLOR & TEXTURE IN SMALL SPACES: by Valerie Easton They live happily in pots pretty much forever, needing little care or attention. What could be easier to grow? SUCCULENTS ARE well suited to the times. Is there another kind of plant that takes up such little room and even less water? They live happily in pots pretty much forever, needing little care or attention. Yet they offer drama with their varied colors and textures, appealingly odd shapes and forms. They bloom, send up stalks, multiply and morph color as the weather warms or cools. People are living in smaller spaces and gardening more in containers. They want low-maintenance plants, and as much impact and design effect as they can get for their dollar, explains Sylvia Matlock, proprietress of DIG Nursery on Vashon Island. Matlock stocked a big selection of sedums, aloes, kalanchoes and sempervivums (AKA hens and chicks) early on. Now most nurseries offer a dazzling number of succulents, both hardy and tender. Rain was beating down on DIG s greenhouse roof when Matlock and Mari Malcolm got together recently to plant up some succulent pots. Malcolm runs Lusher Life Studio, specializing in containerized succulents. I m interested in the kind of tapestry effect you can create when groundcover sedums mix with hens and chicks, with a few other surprises thrown in, Malcolm says of her over-the-top textural artistry. She achieves the Mari Malcolm planted this pot from Esther Studios in layers, echoing the colors of its stripes in the plants leaves, adding height with a spiky air plant. (Sylvia Matlock) look by cramming more plants into one pot than you ever thought possible. Succulents are slow growing and they re happy to get by with little root. It works to squeeze them in. Mari s approach is more floral than garden, Matlock says of her collaborator. She takes note of lovely relationships and pushes the design further along, editing and adding. Malcolm uses a chopstick to poke a hole in the soil, tucking the roots in, nestling the plants closely together. Above ground, she intertwines leaves so the plants look like they ve been growing together over time. Malcolm follows the rule of three, five and seven, repeating the same plant for continuity, but in different sizes for interest. Color inspiration starts with the container, or sometimes with a star of a plant. Look for purple stems, fuzzy leaves or colored margins, then pick up echoes of those shades and textures in other plants, Malcolm advises. For well-draining soil, Malcolm advises special succulent or cactus mixes, or combining 50 percent potting soil with 50 percent pumice. How about hardiness? The tender ones are cooler, showier, Malcolm says. You can overwinter the non-hardies inside near a south-facing window or simply treat them as annuals. Add a few of the more tender succulents in for bold effect and resign yourself to replacing them, or trying a different beauty, next year. Mari Malcolm s favorite hardy succulents: Sempervivum arachnoideum (AKA the cobweb houseleek): These hen-and-chick succulents have tiny threads of what look like spider silk connecting the tips of their leaves, emphasizing their geometry. Sedum spathufolium: A native Northwest stonecrop with clustered rosettes of spoon-shaped leaves. Sedum rupestre Angelina and Sedum reflexum Blue Spruce : Both have feathery foliage. Malcolm uses them together for the contrast of Angelina chartreuse, red-tipped foliage set against the cool Blue Spruce. Sedum dasyphyllum Major : A draper to hang down the edge of pots, with pale, robin s egg blue foliage. Sedum telephium Sunsparkler Firecracker: Compact, with cherry red foliage, it flowers for a full month. Sedum aldolphii: Hardy to Zone 8, the thick, golden, orange-tipped leaves on trailing stems make it look as if it would be tender.
