2 President s Message Happy Fall! The sun is casting more shade on my yard, and I m beginning to see the annual crepe myrtle leaf drop, unfortunately, heading toward my pool! Fall brings one of our busiest seasons for the Grapevine Garden Club. We have the upcoming New Members Coffee, which I hope those of you who have recently become members plan to attend. There is quite a bit of information available to you at this informal gathering, and you will gain a wonderful insight into our many activities and hopefully find one that you would like to become part of! Coming up very shortly on October 17 th is our Fall Plant Sale coupled with the Butterfly Flutterby both located at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens. We are still in need of volunteers, so please do consider this as a wonderful opportunity to donate your time on this day. Further information about these two events can be found within this October Newsletter. Fall is a great time to plant shrubs and trees, so hopefully you will visit the Fall Plant Sale and find just the perfect item to plant in your yard. On a personal note, I have a major milestone birthday coming up. To celebrate that major milestone, we just planted a Fire Dragon Shantung Maple in our yard. I ve taken the liberty of attaching its picture along with a picture of the two vegetables I purchased at the recent herb and vegetable sale at our September Gardens on View. The vegetables seem to be thriving in this cooler weather. Fire Dragon Shantung Maple Writing of Gardens on View, I would like you to consider volunteering your garden as one of our future Gardens on View. This would be a great opportunity for your fellow Grapevine Garden Club members to see the results of your hard work and walk away with ideas for their personal yard. I hope to see you at the Fall Plant Sale, the Butterfly Flutterby and the upcoming October General Meeting! Sharon Swagerty page 2

5 Celebrate the Monarch at Butterfly Flutterby, Saturday, October 17 th. Everyone is invited to celebrate the migration of the monarch butterfly on its way to Mexico. The 18 th annual Butterfly Flutterby (BFFB) is a free, family friendly event. The Grapevine Botanical Gardens is the perfect place to enjoy the festivities. The event is Saturday, October 17 th from 10:00 A.M. 2:00 P.M. and includes a parade, butterfly exhibits, migration station, interactive games, scavenger hunt, butterfly crafts, and the GGC annual native plant and tree sale! BFFB promises to be a fun and educational event for GGC members, families, friends, grandparents and the community. Don t miss it! We need your help even if you are only available for a short time! This is a great way to make new garden club friends! Questions? Contact Margaret Meharg or Gloria Land. Margaret Meharg and Gloria Land Butterfly Flutterby Fall Plant Sale Saturday, October 17 th, 9:00 A.M. 1:00 P.M. Grapevine Botanical Gardens The plant sale will be held at the Botanical Gardens at Heritage Park, 411 Ball Street, Grapevine. Featured are butterfly nectar and host plants, native and adapted trees, shrubs, and perennials. Master Gardeners & Citizen Foresters will be available for guidance. Cash, check or charge will be accepted. Proceeds Benefit the GGC Scholarship and Civic Programs. GGC members received a 10% page 5

6 discount. There is still time to volunteer to help. Contact Sally Hart, plant sale volunteer coordinator. Try grasses for landscaping interest. Whether you use them as screens, accents, or focal points, let ornamental grasses play a role in your garden or landscape. Grasses are great to add height, subtle color and texture to your garden design. Many grasses have distinctive seed heads or colored plumage in the fall and can provide highlights during a time when the rest of your garden has given out with the summer heat. Native grasses can provide nutrition to preserve the biodiversity of wildlife at all levels, from insects to Gulf muhly song birds. Several grasses will be offered during the GGC fall plant sale including native species. Choose from among Weeping Anthericum Lily Grass, Blue grama Blonde Ambition, Blue Lyme Blue Dune, Little bluestem, Gulf muhly pink and white cloud varieties, Sideoats grama and Indian grass. Trees add beauty to their surroundings. Beyond aesthetics, trees perform important functions of absorbing air pollutants and releasing oxygen. They reduce storm water runoff and erosion; provide shade, screening and wildlife habitat. They are well worth the investment in dollars and time to get established and will provide years of benefits. Some of the trees being offered at the plant sale are: Mexican Plum, Ann Christmas Jewel Holly Magnolia, Burr Oak, Sawtooth Oak, Overcup Oak, Jefferson Elm, Christmas Jewel Holly, Greenleaf Holly, Brown Turkey Fig, Black Gum, and American Hornbeam. This is just a sample of the varieties of tree that will be available at the sale. The complete plant sale availability list will be distributed via the week of the sale. 7 Holiday Craft Bazaar It's time for the annual GGC Crafty Corner Holiday Bazaar to be held before and after the November 24 th General Meeting. Do you have a crafting hobby? Do you bead, paint, bake, or sew? Would you like to sell items or simply donate a crafted good (or goods)? GGC encourages members who would like to sell or donate their handcrafted item(s) for the Holiday Bazaar to get crafting! It will be a perfect time to do a little gift shopping and get that special item before the holiday rush. If you would like to sell your items, a $7 donation is requested to participate. If you would like to donate or sell items, please contact Sally Hart. Sally Hart Ways and Means/Other Gardeners on the Go - Dallas Exploring the Texas Discovery Gardens with Entomologist John Watts Tuesday, November 10 th 9:10 A.M. 1:30 P.M. Tour fee $5 per person Tour limited to 30 attendees Having heard horticulturist Roger Sanderson speak at the September meeting, we are now ready to explore and learn more about butterflies at the Texas Discovery Gardens located in Dallas historic Fair Park. Entomologist, John Watts, will present a program, The Beneficial Garden, so that we can learn how insects keep our garden healthy and how to attract them. According to Watts, insects and wildlife are the best indicators of garden health! He will then take us on a behind-the-scenes tour of the two-story Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium transporting us into a tropical rainforest, complete with hundreds of free-flying butterflies. page 7

8 John Watts was born and reared in north Florida where he developed an early interest in insects and began studying them at six years of age. He received a masters degree in entomology from the University of Florida where he specialized in insect husbandry. It was also in college that he began a lifelong interest in the biology and systematics of leaf beetles. With over 20 years of experience in the live butterfly and arthropod exhibit business and an inordinate fondness for nature in general, he gladly shares his wealth of knowledge at Texas Discovery Gardens.
