3 News from the Lodge on 4th Several changes took place during the last four months: The activity director Jane Osbourne is no longer working at the lodge. Her replacement is Don Bateman. The staff and residents are adapting nicely to this major change. Our wonderful volunteer, Debra Shaw, has recently moved to White Rock. She worked tirelessly for the residents. She made the beautiful floral arrangements for the birthday celebrants. She is going to be deeply missed by everyone at the lodge. Jan is an activity aide. She is a gifted musician. She sings and plays guitar. She has started a choir with the residents. She thought maybe thirteen or so would show up. No! Thirty residents arrived for the first practice. She has plans to have them perform a concert around Christmas time. They are now practicing singing Jingle Bells. She would like the choir members to wear red scarves. If any of you have extra's around the house, receive them at the THRIFT or want to knit or crochet some please let me know. Jan thinks maybe 20 to start with and see how the choir comes along in time. Please call me if you are interested in making these sweet seniors proud. PH: Happy Volunteering Sheila Wilson NEW MEMBERS: Sue Trimble (Thrift Shop) and Susan Fox (Meals on Wheels) Ladysmith Kinsmen Club Festival of Lights Our auxiliary is going to have an entry in the Festival of Lights this year. We hope to have some youth volunteers walking beside our bus as well as volunteers from the Memorial Gardens. The committee this year is Deb Drysdale, Wendy Chapman, Brook Johnson, Jennifer Forrest, Miriam Rose, Pam Fraser and Sandra Dall. More good news about meetings: There is no general meeting in December!

4 MEMORIES: Ruth Atkinson talks about the Memorial Gardens: In 1984, when my sister Doris Gallagher passed away, over a thousand dollars came to the Auxiliary in memoriam. Since she had been an avid gardener, Wilma Wickham suggested a planter or garden at the hospital. So, with many dedicated workers the Doris Gallagher Memorial Garden was started. Close family and friends poured the sidewalks and patios from the plans of Hospital gardener, Bill Dyer. When more money was received from Ladysmith, families requesting a tree or shrub be planted in memory of their loved one, the garden was soon full. We then started the Rose Garden. From 1985 to 1995 the maintenance was done by Betty Spurling, Ruth Atkinson, Marion Wainwright, Kay Rozzano, Noreen Stewart, Wilma Wickham and Odie Gust. Two auxilians Martha and Ralph Peace installed our first sprinkler system what a donation! From 1996 to 1997 Nadi Bottomley and Berit Matson were in charge of the garden. The following years Eileen Bodaly, Berit Matson, Joan Hendricksen, Marion Renyarad and Stan Elder maintained the garden. Between 1996 and 2003, a new sign, new sprinkler system, more sidewalks, curb, flowerbeds and plantings were added. The gazebo was constructed by Jack Maier and Ed Polachek. Stan Elder dug the trenches for the new sprinkler system and added the lighting system in He added the little humorous signs such as The Garden of Weedin, a dead branch stuck in the soil that has a sign I tried it died and Don t just stand there weed. There have been weddings, teas and barbeques in the garden. The patients and their visitors have spent many pleasant hours there. Eileen Bodaly and Stan Elder were married there. Twenty eight years of hard work but oh so rewarding. It is truly beautiful! Note: Pam Fraser is continuing the tradition with her team of gardeners. Editor: Sandra Dall
