Generally Malmö has a great need to densify the city and create affordable rental housing for its inhabitants. FUTURE: This concept suggests to densify within the apartment blocks, whilst new construction in quantity and design respects the cultural heritage. The result shows a design proposal for a lively sustainable neighbourhood with over 900 apartments, mixed functions and design for humans and nature. This is a place for all ages and different lifestyles, with 300 flats for students/young and 150 for senior citizens. The remaining 450 apartments are also flexible and can be used for multi-generational living communities, for families or student corridors. The large outdoor facilities make the area attractive and provide lots of space for sports and leisure. The park and connected green spaces foster wild life. The community gardens and scattered fruit trees and shrubs increase biodiversity and local harvesting. There are lots of convenient services e.g. grocery store, café, car & bike pool, community center with workshops, sports facilities, kindergartens, health care and more. Renovation: There are 13 existing buildings that can be transformed into apartment blocks. Insulation needs to be added on the inside, to spare the facade, and reach passive house standard. The new roofs include large windows and solar panels for hot water and energy supply. The basement floor will be equipped with new smaller and larger windows. The old promenade passages (solgångar) will be transformed into roofed bike racks, recycling houses or storage. Rain water will be harvested and greywater will be reused and recycled. The filtered rain water will be used for food production in the underground hydroponics. These will be located in the larger parts of the culvert system, were excess heat is provided via solar installations. The grocery store will manage the cultivation, and sell the locally produced organic vegetables on the spot. The store is located in the renovated former church, beside a bakery + café, -1/5-

2 2 and copy & print & post services. The former workshops can be transformed into two kindergartens with extra large outdoor spaces and playgrounds. PRESENT: Some buildings are still empty today, others got new functions, like an elementary school, several kindergartens, student apartments, a health care center, an ecocenter, a large kitchen providing catering for schools, and the immigration services established a unit for unaccompanied refugee children. Still many fences and barriers are left, and more parking spaces have been added, making the area less attractive. But Sege Park is connected to other green areas, several bus lines, and good cycle paths. It takes just 15min by bike to the city center and 20min to Malmö Högskola. Moreover Sege Park has one of Sweden\\\ s largest solar energy productions, which also provide hot water for the households. HISTORY: Malmö Östra Sjukhus (MÖS) was built in the 1930 as a psychiatric hospital on the outskirts of town. It used to be a self-sufficient little village within the larger city of Malmö, having its own underground culvert system for energy, water and heat. It consisted of a large landscape park and more than 20 buildings, as well as greenhouses and fields for food production. Some remaining apple trees still exist today. The architecture as well as the existing vegetation and park are considered valuable cultural heritage that should be preserved. In 1995 the area lost its function as a hospital, and was renamed into Sege Park. (This is a follow-up proposal based on an analysis of Sege Parks future needs, its history and present.
