1 The Lands Council Presents The Perfect Storm A presentation by Amanda Parrish WATERSHED PROGRAM DIRECTOR

2 About The Lands Council Environmental Non-Profit Spokane, WA We preserve and revitalize Inland Northwest forests, water, and wildlife through advocacy, education, effective action, and community engagement. We collaborate with a broad range of interested parties to seek smart and mutually respectful solutions to environment and health issues.

3 Stormwater Stormwater is water that originates precipitation events and snowmelt. The runoff often ends up in nearby streams, rivers, and other water bodies.

4 Stormwater in Spokane Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) v. Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4)

5 Stormwater and PCBs Chemicals still found in products like paint, caulk, lighting ballasts Hazardous to health, especially for children Eaten by fish and then accumulate in fish tissue

7 Integrated Clean Water Plan City of Spokane will: Reduce untreated flows to the river Prioritize projects based on their positive environmental impact Make the Spokane River cleaner faster

8 Low Impact Development (LID) Alternative to traditional grey infrastructure Modeled after nature Techniques that infiltrate, filter, store, evaporate

10 Biochar Component Biochar Characteristics: High porosity (up to 800 square meters SA to gram) Hold 9x weight in water Capable of removing metals, nutrients, oils, PCBs, and other contam. Organic content for plant growth Similar to activated carbon, lower cost Waste product put to good use

We are pretty excited about this, said Mike Petersen, executive director of the Lands Council. It s the first time the council a local nonprofit organization dedicated
