Huron Pines: Conserving the Forests, Lakes and Streams of Northeast Michigan Nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization Serving 11 counties in Northeast Michigan 3 Program areas: Conservation Leadership Aquatic Restoration Land Stewardship

Huron Pines: Conserving the Forests, Lakes and Streams of Northeast Michigan Large Woody Debris

Northern Michigan Streams Typically high quality, coldwater streams Predominantly groundwater fed Relatively undeveloped watersheds Sensitive to pollutants such as sediment, fluctuating water flows, and elevated water temperatures. Water quality and quantity are both issues of concern.

Direct Outfalls to the River

Project Area City of Grayling Au Sable flows through downtown Grayling 400 acres of commercial and residential property Not NPDES Phase II this is a voluntary project $1 million project with funding from the state, city, and private contributions

Project Goals Improvements in water quality and community aesthetics Reduce the direct discharge of polluted runoff into the Au Sable River by 80% Share results of this pilot project with other communities in the Great Lakes

A Hybrid Approach Apply LID techniques to reduce quantity of runoff. By infiltrating stormwater, we are trying to mimic the natural hydrology in the upper Au Sable Watershed. Use end of the pipe BMPs to handle remaining runoff and provide treatment in areas where natural infiltration is not realistic.

Best Management Practices Vortechnic oil grit separators Rain gardens and detention basins Adoption of city stormwater ordinance

Best Management Practices Vortechnic oil grit separators retrofit of existing storm sewer system filter grease and sediment good for use in urban areas where infiltration space is unavailable Rain gardens and detention basins Adoption of city stormwater ordinance

Oil Grit Separators

Oil Grit Separators

Rain Gardens

Best Management Practices Vortechnic oil grit separators Rain gardens and detention basins Adoption of city stormwater ordinance all new development must treat stormwater on site designs are based on the 24 hour, 25 year storm

2007 Projects Final 2 Vortechnic oil grit separators installed

The Grayling Stormwater Project: 2007 Projects y plants installed in rain garden enhancement y Other rain garden maintenance: watering and weeding Fall 2005 Summer 2006 Summer 2007

2007 Projects Large rain garden planted in city park After Before

Project Accomplishments All major outputs of stormwater in the city of Grayling are now treated Vortechnics and infiltration basins working as expected During Rain Immediately After Rain

Lessons Learned Soils Climate Adjacent landowners Lack of experienced, qualified contractors

Future Plans Work with city to enhance existing rain gardens and institute resident maintenance programs More rain gardens and detention basins as demonstration sites Interpretive signage Helping other communities adopt ordinances and use Low Impact Development practices
