The Back Bulb Marin Orchid Society Monthly Newsletter June 2010 Join us! Falkirk Cultural Center, Tuesday, June 22 for Potluck/Orchid Bingo ++ Orchid Doctor at 6:30; Virus & Water Testing (if Requested in Advance) In This Issue President's Corner May Show and Tell Spread the Word! CSNJC Speakers' Day June 22 Potluck & Bingo Know Your Roots! AOS May Awards Marin County Fair: Going Global June 5 Re-potting at MAGC D&D Orchids Open House President's Corner: Falkirk, Here We Come! Thanks to the great suggestions of several of our members, we contacted and visited a number of potential meeting sites...and the winner is: Falkirk Cultural Center 1408 Mission at E St. San Rafael, CA There is parking on the driveway in front of the Dear BackBulb, Looking for a fun-packed evening of orchids, good food, chaos, mayhem, high hopes and big wins? It's our annual night of potluck and Orchid Bingo! A couple of favorite orchids came to live at our house because I was the first to holler, "Bingo." Lynne promises that the evening will be more than food and Bingo. There will be a mini-auction as well as a presentation by John Merlo on how to use and contribute your stories and pictures to the MOS Blog. The San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers has invited MOS members to become Jungle Guides or Docents, sharing our love of plants with school children and adults. You will find the details toward the end of the newsletter. Note: If your web browser does not give a clear, two-column view of this electronic version of the Back Bulb, you can click the first line in this that says: Having trouble viewing this ? Click here. This setting also allows you to print in black and white. Sandra Merlo, Back Bulb Editor Monthly Meeting: On Tuesday, June 22, MOS members and guests meet in the parlor of the Falkirk Cultural Center, 1408 Mission Ave. at "E" Street, San Rafael. See you there! Mini-Auction, Potluck, Blogging, and Bingo! This totally silly MOS fundraiser is a lot of fun, especially when you are winning. Lynne says she promises not to play "cover the
2 building, plus overflow parking down below in a well-lighted lot. The key factors in the Board's final decision were: - availability on Tuesday nights - price - location in central Marin, with easy access from easy entry into the building when carrying plants. Falkirk best met those criteria...plus they have a gorgeous greenhouse, where Glenn Smith and the Master Gardeners work and play. There may be synergy opportunities for MOS. MAGC has been a delightful venue for us, and we are leaving their beautiful facilities with a touch of sadness.but the cost of membership and the room-bumping made it no longer viable for us to meet there.the Cymbidiums have all been re-potted by MOS members in the last 30 days, and we are leaving MAGC on good terms...maybe one day we will return. So mark your calendar: Our next meeting, June 22, will be at Falkirk, and it's BINGO and Pot Luck card" bingo so that the games move quickly and there are lots of orchid winners. The mini-auction promises to showcase some coveted plants so, remember the MOS auction creed: Bid often and bid high! If you did not get the plant you had your eye on at our spring auction, here is a chance to find one even better. For the potluck, remember that we will want salads, main dishes, desserts, and drinks. Thanks in advance for contributing to an entertaining evening of bingo, education, blogging, and hot-and-heavy bidding. Directions to Falkirk Cultural Center: From the North on 101, take Central San Rafael exit, turn West onto Mission Avenue in San Rafael and continue to 1408 at "E". From South Marin, take the 101 exit for Central San Rafael, go North to Mission, then left on Mission. There is a parking lot plus parking in the u-shaped entryway. Debra Atwood Took Us Down to Our Roots on May 25 A big thank you to Debra Atwood of Napa Valley Orchids for share her incredible knowledge about the varieties of roots that orchids have and how important this information is to orchid re-potting, choice of media, and water and fertilizer requirements. Of course, her love of orchid roots has led her to above-average orchid culture! Debra Atwood After nearly three decades in the hospitality industry, Debra started Napa Valley Orchids in She not only maintains a greenhouse filled with orchids (primarily species), she is a consultant on orchid growing and helps her clients with greenhouse maintenance. Look for her in the summer at the St. Helena farmers' market. Winters find her busy with orchid shows. Debra teaches beginning growers about orchid cultivation through workshops and classes. Thank you for bringing refreshments to Mary Ann Aleandri, Ann Weiskopf, Carol Gotti, and Cathy Thompson. And a big thanks to those who helped set up and take down but did not sign the sheet. What a perfect theme for orchid lovers because we think globally and we connect cultures in a couple of ways, don't we? Here is our chance to shine. Susan Anderson has graciously agreed to head up the event with Jeff Mulanex proving sessions on orchid culture. Thank you Susan and Jeff! As we have in the past, MOS will put up a fabulous display that
4 San Francisco Orchid Society Pacific Orchid Expo Online Orchid Species Identification May Show and Tell Thanks to you members who shared the rewarding blooms your plants provided as a result of your careful care and plenty of love. We appreciate you. Ron Ludwig: Prostecea Cochledta and Lycaste Aromatica Gail Bench: Bifrenaria Harrisoniai and Bulbophylum Longissimum B.F. and Mary Falk: Masd. Ignca x Yungaensis Linda Tripp: Barkeria Melanocaulon, Dendrochilum Parvulum, Oberonia Setigera, Sarcochilus Fitzgeraldii, and Lycaste Aangelae Elisabeth Gleason: Psychopsis B F Falk Gail Beach features your orchid-growing and your beautiful blooms. We plan to recycle our beautiful POE display because Mardi Gras is found in almost all cultures around the world. WHERE we need you: Marin Civic Center exhibition hall (behind the auditorium) WHEN we need you: On Tuesday, June 29, from 3-8, we will gather to set up our display at the San Rafael fairgrounds. If you have not already signed up, you will have an opportunity to do so at our next meeting. WHAT we need: The MOS display needs your blooming plants! This is what makes the display eye catching and raises the community's interest in orchid culture and in the Marin Orchid Society. Reminder: Please bring the genus and species of the orchid so that a tag can be made. HOW you sign up to display plants and to volunteer your time: Susan will bring the sign-up sheet to our June meeting but... don't wait until then. You can call Susan at WHY you should volunteer: MOS needs your help and your blooming Orchids to display...help! Without you, no display. The Fair is FUN, and working a three-hour shift gets you a free admission to the Fair. There are live concerts every day, an electric car show, carnival rides, carnival food, attractions galore, animal exhibits, and fireworks every night. (Google Marin County Fair 2010 for more info). NEWS BLAST: There are typically not many orchids entered in the individual plant judging. A few years back, a new plant from Trader Joe's store won the blue ribbon. Let's raise the bar, you orchid enthusiasts! CRITICAL: Take down is 7-9 AM on Tuesday, July 6. This is a really crucial time slow because orchids have to be picked up so the cleaning crew can get in and our display must be packed up and delivered. Transportation and your assistance are greatly appreciated. JUNE 5: RE-POTTING FOR MEMBERS AND THE PUBLIC! On June 5, from 10-2, MOS staged a second orchid re-potting and culture event
5 for members and the public at MAGC. This event gives MOS two opportunities: - Make re-potting simpler for members and the public - Attract new members. Linda Tripp and a WOW! Members had arrived at 8:30 for setup and soaking bark so that everything was ready at 10. Our signs plus infomercials in the area's papers caught the attention of our visitors. Linda shares another beauty Ron Ludwig Mary Ann Aleandri Photos by Ann Weiskopf THANK YOU! DUES are DUE!... and even overdue for some members. Ways to tell if your membership has expired: For snail mail: the expiration date on your label is outlined in red. For , you will receive a reminder postcard. Unsure? Ask Bill Lenarz! Please renew your membership today! Together, we add quality to orchid cultivation and awareness. Weather was excellent, the turnout good, and plants looked happy to be re-potted, particularly some large ones that had been in the same container and medium for quite a few years. Cymbidiums are Renewed It was fun to meet orchid growers who had had great success with their plants and who appreciated our guidance in moving them into new media and new pots. And, in a few cases, orchids may have been saved from a certain early demise because they were so Re-potting at MAGC crowded and new roots were struggling to find life among old, dead root systems. We did what we know best and gave growing tips to those who came. Thanks to you MOS members who put in a good day's work: Glenn, Bill L, Bill S, John, Susan, Lynne, Carol, Ron, Gail, Sandra M and Sandra F! Jungle Guides lead tours for 2nd-5th grade classes.tours are held every Tuesday-Friday from September through May at 10:00 a.m. Tours are offered at no cost to schools, and cover the basics of plant evolution, conservation, botany, and tropical ecosystems. Docents educate adult visitors on the Conservatory's extensive collection of tropical plants. Docents lead the daily free tours at 11:00 and 2:30, as well as special guided tours for groups. Training Program The Conservatory welcomes volunteers of all ages and experience levels! The 7-session training program will be held at the Conservatory every Monday from July 12 through August 23 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. The $50 cost of the training program covers all mandatory training materials. John, our webmaster, invites you to submit your orchid-related thoughts, hints, and dreams: MOS Blog arrived on the day of a meeting and we appreciate the bids. Barbara had the highest bid and looked very happy with her new acquisition. Thank you for your bids, members, and thank you, OrchidWiz. Special appreciation goes to Ron Ludwig for heading up the process. Back Bulbs Needed for Falkirk Demo Gardens Just a reminder that Glenn Smith asks each of us to save and label any back bulbs we end up with this year as we re-pot and divide our cymbidiums. Glenne grows these on and then sells the plants as they come into flower. The sales, held at Falkirk in San Rafael, benefit the public Demonstration Gardens at Falkirk. These gardens have been installed and maintained by Marin Master Gardeners. Please place your bulbs in paper or zip-lock bags with the cultivar name printed on plastic labels or written on the outside of the bag. All the bulbs from any one cultivar can be placed in a single bag. Bulbs for unknown cultivars are also welcome. Purpose and Vision of Marin Orchid Society The purpose of the Marin Orchid Society, our Mission and Vision, is:!to provide support for those having common interests in the appreciation and culture of orchid plants, to broaden their interests and improve their knowledge!to acquire and distribute to the members practical and scientific information about the collection, culture and propagation of orchids!to arrange the dissemination of information through exhibits, lectures, access to publications, and any other means, for the encouragement of orchid growing!to cooperate in and take part in activities of other Societies with purposes similar to those of this Society Your ideas and articles are always appreciated!
