2 SPRING LIBRARY SERIES DISCOVER LOUISIANA SUPER PLANTS Tuesday, February 21, :30 PM Horticulturist Butch Drewes, previously with Naylor's Hardware and Garden Center, is now with Clegg's Nursery. He shared the history of the Louisiana Super Plant program, which began in 2010 at the request of the LA Nursery & Landscape Association. This educational and marketing program showcases plants that perform well in Louisiana landscapes. Each year several plants are nominated for trials and those chosen go through several years of university evaluations and observations at the Hammond Research Station. Those plants who are a success and chosen as a Super Plant are referred to as university tested and industry approved. Each spring and fall LSU AgCenter horticulturists unveil a list of Louisiana Super Plants that were evaluated and selected for their superior performance under Louisiana growing conditions. A few tips about some of our Louisiana Super Plant selections: D SunPatiens, a variety of impatient s is less susceptible to downy mildew-needs a well drained area to perform best. D Viburnam Mrs. Schillers Delight can be pruned to keep it compact, but may reach heights of 4-5 ; the shrub also blooms in the fall. D Rabbiteye blueberry varieties are the best to grow in our location. Avoid other varieties sold in the area. D Fall 2017 Winner Petunia Supertunia Vista Bubblegum is a long lasting draping petunia that can take the heat better than the Wave and blooms a long time. Butch shared a bit of history and how after suffering the catastrophic flood damage in August 2016, that Naylor's Hardware and Garden Center survives in a new partnership with Clegg's Nursery. Johnny Naylor s vegetable seeds are available, but most vegetable plants normally sold by Naylors will not be available this spring, with the exception of a few including Sunsugar tomatoes. As always, the Ascension Parish Library staff at Gonzales was graciously accommodating. The Library team provided a display of a variety of Super Plant blooms and cu ngs for inspec on. 2

4 GARDENING IN ASCENSION PARISH - JUST KEEPS GROWING! 2017 SPRING LIBRARY SERIES The Ascension Parish Master Gardeners Association, under the direction of the LSU Ag Center and sponsored by the Ascension Parish Library system, presents a spring series of gardening and landscaping educational presentations geared to both novice and advanced gardeners. GARDENING TO ATTRACT POLLINATORS TUESDAY, MARCH 21, :30 PM Our pollinators distribute pollen among flowers. When we create a habitat filled with nectar and helpful host plants, we create an area that will attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and more. Choosing the correct habitat site, methods of pest control, mowing, and recognizing beneficial "weeds" are essential aspects of managing a pollinator habitat. Speaker Mila Berhane, Senior Research Associate, Southern University and Proprietor of Greenhand Nursery will guide us through the process of gardening to attract pollinators. Dutchtown Library Highway 73 Geismar, LA (225) (Please call to register) GARDENING JACKPOT-FREE PLANTS AND INFORMATION TUESDAY, APRIL 25, :30 PM Do you have a list of gardening questions about citrus, ornamentals, perennials, vegetables? This is your chance to finally get the answers you need. Craig Roussel, Ascension Parish/St. James Parish County Agent with LSU AgCenter, will conduct a question-answer session on a wide range of gardening topics. Then, you will have the opportunity to participate in an old-fashioned tradition a plant swap. Bring your labeled plants, cuttings, bulbs, or seeds to exchange with local gardeners. You will leave with a jackpot of new ideas and information as well as new plants for your garden. Gonzales Library 708 South Irma Blvd. Gonzales, LA (225) (Please call to register) 4

8 THE LIFE STAGES OF A LADYBUG The term ladybug refers to all the beetles in the Coccinellidae (kox ih NELL a DEE) family, and the colors, shapes and sizes vary greatly from what we generally refer to as a ladybug. Harmonia axyridis, Asian lady beetle Non na ve Hippodamia convergens "Convergent Lady" Na ve Dr. Chris Carlton, Biological Sciences Director of the LSU AgCenter, recently corresponded when asked to iden fy the most common na ve Lady beetle in Louisiana. He provided several resources, one wri en by his predecessor, Dr. Joan Chapin, a lady beetle specialist. She published The Coccinellidae of Louisiana in 1974, which is posted online at h p:// Dr. Carlton added, Ironically, the most common species is not in Joan s paper because the Asian lady beetle was not established when it was published. The fauna has changed drama cally since then. Many large, previously common na ve species are in serious decline due to compe on with the Asian species and climate change. The Asian lady beetle is apparently well adapted to warmer winter weather such as we are having now, so the situa on will likely get worse. 8
