1 Ascension Parish Master Gardener Association NOVEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER Bi-Monthly Meeting The last bi-monthly Ascension Parish Master Gardener Association meeting of 2013 will be on Wednesday, November 20th, 9:00 a.m., at the LSU AgCenter office located at Lamar- Dixon. Please note this date change which was made so that everyone could attend the Plant Materials Conference. If you have an item for the agenda, please contact Jamie Trisler. Please wear your Master Gardener name tag. They each have an interest in Butterfly Gardens and often compare notes on the numbers and varieties of butterflies they attract.

When not in her garden, Glenda, a native of Minden, Louisiana, can be found volunteering at her church and local schools, and spending time with her

Glenda and Rebecca Grice When Mother In Law, Glenda Grice, mentioned the Master Gardener Program to her Daughter In Law, Rebecca Grice, they both agreed that it might be fun to take the classes. But as the summer wore on, only Glenda, a retired nurse, actually registered for the program. Glenda figured that Rebecca, a substitute kindergarten teacher, was probably busy with family life. Rebecca is married to Glenda s son, Leslie, and they have a 12 year old daughter, as well as 3 dogs and a cat.. Imagine Glenda s shock when sitting alone on the first day of the AMG class, Rebecca walked in with a big smile on her face, surprising her Mother In Law! Rebecca had made some frantic phone calls to ensure that she could register at the last minute. Together they furthered their learning and love for gardening and graduated the 2012 AMG program. While they both enjoy ornamentals and the Louisiana Super Plants, Glenda has down sized and is exploring her skills at container gardening. Rebecca is expanding her skills with garden beds. They each have an interest in Butterfly Gardens and often compare notes on the numbers and varieties of butterflies they attract. Their favorite Butterfly Garden plants include milk weed, passion vine, Mexican heather, salvia, Cassia tree and the Lantana Bandana. When not in her garden, Glenda, a native of Minden, Louisiana, can be found volunteering at her church and local schools, and spending time with her husband, Dewey. Together they have two children, three grandchildren and a super cute Maltese puppy named BJ. In addition to her work as a kindergarten teacher, Rebecca, a native of Dothan, Alabama, has also worked in the real estate industry. Exchanging gardening tips and plant cuttings is not the only hobby these two AMGers share. They also enjoy cooking together, especially for their big family gatherings. One of Glenda and Rebecca s favorite family recipes is the delicious Pumpkin Roll and they have been gracious enough to share it with us on page 6...

4 Pop-In Flowers! The JOY Committee has come up with a wonderful way to brighten a seniors day Pop-In Flowers. All too often our elderly residences are placed in nursing homes and simply forgotten. Not everyone has friends or family that are able to visit or share some time with them. In an effort to spread some happiness to this group of seniors, the JOY Committee is asking AMGs to stop by a local nursing home and surprise one of these residents with a plant or bouquet. It could be a plant or bouquet that someone gave you and that you are ready to pass along. Or it could be a beautiful arrangement from your own flower garden! The JOY Committee is making labels that can be placed on your floral gift to identify the type of plant or flower (education) with the Ascension Master Gardener logo. If anyone wishes to bring a plant before these labels are available, please label accordingly. WE ARE MASTER GARDENERS and spreading JOY by sharing nature s beauty with our community is one of our many callings!

5 UPCOMING EVENTS THE REFLECTIONS IN THE GARDEN GARDEN SERIES Burden Conference Center, 4560 Essen Lane, Noon 1pm (bring a lunch) $10 for non members, free for Burden Horticulture Society Dec. 2 A Natural Christmas Joel Franklin, Peregrin s Florist Nov. 15 Cocktails in the Gardens, LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden This fundraising event for the Burden Horticulture Society features some of the area s top bars creating specialty cocktails that range from pre Prohibition classics to contemporary drinks featuring fresh fruits, herbs and juices. Area restaurants will also offer their signature dishes throughout the event. Tickets for the event cover all food and beverages. 6:30 10:30 p.m. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $40 and include a parking pass and reserved access to a VIP lounge from 6:30 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $30 and are valid for admission from 7:30 10:30 p.m. Attendees must be 21 years or older and casual cocktail attire is requested. Admission will be limited and the event is expected to sell out, so buy your tickets early. Jan. 18 NE LA Master Gardeners Annual Spring Ag Expo Gardening Seminar Southern Birds & Blooms, West Monroe Convention Center West Monroe Convention Center is located at 901 Ridge Ave. Registration is from 7:30 8:00 and fee is $ Presenting the following speakers Robert Rickett The Ruby Throated Hummingbird, Jeff Landry Growing Wine Grapes in Louisiana, Jimmy Dean Bluebird Trail and featured Speaker Melinda Myers of Birds and Blooms Beautiful, Easy, and Affordable Landscape Makeovers. 6 PUMPKIN ROLL Oven Temp. 375 degrees Bake in a jelly roll pan that has been prepared as follows: spray with Pam, place a sheet of wax paper in pan and then spray with Pam again. Ingredients: 3 eggs Icing/Filling: 8oz cream cheese (softened) 1 cup sugar 4 Tbsp. butter 3/4 cup canned pumpkin 1 cup powdered sugar 1 tsp soda 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp cinnamon Mix well and set aside chopped pecans (OPTIONAL) Mix eggs, 1 cup sugar and pumpkin together, beat thoroughly, sift flour, soda and cinnamon together and add to egg mixture. Mix well and pour into jelly roll pan (sprinkle optional pecans on top before baking). Bake for 15 minutes. After baked, turn out onto pastry cloth or paper towel that has been sprinkled with powdered sugar. Sprinkle more powdered sugar on cake. Roll up and cool completely. When cooled, unroll and spread with icing and roll up again. Wrap in wax paper and then heavy foil. Freeze. Can be cut immediately when removed from freezer. Serve cold or room temperature.
