She has agreed to come teach us a bit about Shakespeare s plants too. We can t cover everything in one evening, so Dr. Iyengar will focus on flowers and plants collected or mentioned by Perdita (The Winter s Tale) and Ophelia (Hamlet). Most people today, however, are only familiar with the revised Second Quarto and the First Folio versions, which were possibly edited for reading, adding considerable length and convoluted poetry to the mix. Soap Making 101 Beginning Cold Process Soapmaking Tuesday, October 21 6:00 9:00 pm Visitor Center, Classroom 2 $45 Soap Making 101 is a beginning-level soapmaking class designed to teach students to make soap by hand at home. The main focus of this class is the "cold process" soapmaking method. Although it may seem complicated when you are first starting out, making your own soap from scratch (the way some of our grandparents did) using all-natural ingredients can be both fun and rewarding ~ not to mention extremely addicting! We will cover what soap is, soap process, choosing fats and lye safety. You will work in pairs to make soap that you get to take home! If you've ever measured, mixed, and baked anything then you can make soap. NOTE: This is an age 16+ class since making soap from scratch involves working with lye (aka sodium hydroxide). Also, cold process soap needs about a month to cure before using. To take part please wear or bring a long-sleeved shirt, closed-toed shoes. You'll also need rubber gloves and safety goggles. There will be several pairs of goggles and gloves to share, but if you prefer your own please bring them to class. Warm-Season Grasses of the Georgia Piedmont (Elective Course) Saturday, October 25 9:00 am - 1:00 pm Visitor Center, Classroom 2 $50 Grasses are the most economically and ecologically important plant family but most of us know very little about them and fewer still know how to identify grasses. The last two hours of the class will be spent in the field examining a variety of native and exotic grasses. Bring a hand lens.
