Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program. Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you've got Zumba! Zumba and Zumba Fitness are registered trademarks of Zumba Fitness, LLC. The Garden will be offering this as a continual program. The registration fee includes a 10 visit punch card. Thursdays Nature Ramblers Meet at Shade Garden Arbor 8:30am (roughly 90 minutes), Free Please join our Nature Ramblers and learn more about the natural areas, flora and fauna of the Garden while making new friends and enjoying the cool, fresh air. Sessions will start with an inspirational reading by a nature writer such as Annie Dillard, John Muir, or Janise Ray. This is a ramble not a hike; we will stop to view interesting plants, insects, butterflies, mushrooms, etc., along the way. Ramblers are encouraged to bring their own nature writings or favorite poems and essays to share with the group. Join us for one or all sessions; these informal rambles are free but donations are accepted in the Garden's donation box in the lobby of the Visitor Center. Meet at Shade Garden Arbor at 8:30 am. Led by Dale Hoyt (Biologist and Naturalist), and Hugh Nourse (Author, Photographer, and Naturalist.)

2 Saturday, March 1 Exotic Birds and Reptiles on Planet Earth Family Day and Springtime Artist Market Visitor Center, Great Room Fee: $5/person; $20/family (under 2 are free) Join us for the first Springtime Artist Market at the State Botanical Garden. This market brings together local artists with the purpose of raising money for the new Children s Garden. At 10am Roy Hodge, from Wildlife Paradise in Atlanta, will educate and entertain family members with his menagerie of exotic animals. Discover amazing animal adaptations and learn about conservation concerns of many different animals, including cockatoos, parrots, spectacled owls, monitor lizards, anacondas, boa constrictors and more! Following his presentation, join the SBG education staff and participate in hands-on activities and crafts to learn more about forest ecosystems from around the world. Enjoy this spring day as you attend Exotic Birds and Reptiles Day from 10:00am-11:30am and shop from 9:00am-3:00pm. $5/person; $20/family (under 2 are free.) Information at or (706) Friday, March 7 Friends First Friday: From Russia with Love for Sea Buckthorn Visitor Center Downstairs 9:00 am 10:30 am, $12 Grown for its berries and as a source of cosmetic and medicinal oils, sea buckthorn was touted as a potential new crop for Canada. Wilf was a member of a Canadian scientific mission to Southern Siberia and eastern Germany where he sampled juice, jellies, lotions, potions, and, of course, sea buckthorn vodka! The things this poor guy does for science! This monthly event includes a full breakfast and an opportunity to meet new people while learning about the Garden, gardening or garden history. Please make your reservation by Wednesday, March 5 by calling Saturday, March 8 DIY: Wedding Flowers Visitor Center, Classroom 2 2:30 5:30 pm, $40 Want to learn to create hand-tied bridal bouquets? Whether you're getting married or helping a friend with her wedding flowers, this class is a must how-to workshop! Learn eco-floral design and produce stylish hand-tied wedding bouquets. Participants will learn about selecting and conditioning flowers, preparing flower stems for design, as well as color and texture pairings to create gorgeous seasonal bouquets for the special event. Also offered will be an assortment of DIY ideas to create a simple centerpiece, a boutonniere, and a corsage using seasonal blooms, unique foliage and ribbon wraps to inspire your lovely bouquet. A materials list will be provided after registration. 3 Sunday, March 9, series start date Beekeeping for Beginners $95 These workshops cover the fundamentals of beekeeping. Weather alternative dates will be scheduled if necessary. A protective veil and gloves are required. $95 for 3 units: Spring Hive Management on Sunday, March 9, Installing Bees/Spring Buildup on Sunday, April 13, and Products from the Hive on Sunday, June 8. Information at or (706) Unit 4: Spring Hive Management Sunday, March 9, 1:00-3:00 pm Meet at Shade Garden Arbor This is our early spring hive inspection. We will be looking for brood, pollen, honey, drones and, of course, the queen. Unit 5: Installing Bees/Spring Buildup Sunday, April 13, 1:00-3:00 pm Meet at Shade Garden Arbor We will be doing followup inspections. This is an opportunity to see how the bee colonies build up in spring. We will be looking for many of the same things we saw in March but will also be looking for queen cells. Unit 6: Products from the Hive Sunday, June 8, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Boogerhill Bee Farm, Danielsville, GA The sweetest of all the beekeeping units! Dan will take capped honey frames from a 'super', remove the cappings and extract the honey. Tuesday, March 11 1st Annual Conservation Lecture: Linda and James Hunt Gardenside Room 6:30 8:30 pm, $5, reservations requested Linda and James Hunt are both accomplished authors, are sharing the podium for the State Botanical Garden of Georgia s first Conservation Lecture. Linda has written Bold Spirit, an account of Helga Estby and her teenaged daughter Clara, who set off from Eastern Washington to walk across the United States in 1896 in an attempt to win a $10,000 wager and save her family s farm. James Hunt recently published Restless Fires: Young John Muir's Thousand- Mile Walk to the Gulf in Together, we will vicariously walk across 19th Century North America. Information at or (706) March Spring Break Mini-Camp, for ages 5-11 Visitor Center, Classroom 2 8:30 am 2:30 pm, $88. Send your kids on a naturalist adventure at the Garden during our spring break mini-camp! Each day will be filled with activities that connect youth to the natural wonders that surround us. We will explore the gardens, trails and streams by using our senses and playing games. Come learn about the wonders of nature, explore the Garden, and make new friends! Each walk will focus on a different topic such as the moon, constellations, or nocturnal creatures. Bring family and friends of all ages along to enjoy the mysterious world of nature at night! Be prepared to hike up to 2 miles on our wooded trails and in the garden. If you have young children or infants, a backpack carrier is suggested. Information at or (706) Wednesday, March 19 Flower Arranging: Fruit and Vegetable Design Visitor Center, Gardenside Room 9:00 am 3:00 pm, $45 This is the fourth in a series of five National Garden Club units focusing on designs incorporating fruits and vegetables. Taught by Celia McQuaid Brown, Accredited Master Flower Show Judge, The Garden Club of Georgia. Participants will be provided with a list of materials to bring to class. Limited to 20 participants. Information at or (706) Friday, March 21 Andre Michaux in Person 6:30 pm reception, 7:30 pm speaker, $20 The Friends of the Garden will bring Charlie Williams to create a first-person interpretation of Andre Michaux for a presentation and reception. Michaux was an 18th Century French botanist and plant collector. For a while, Michaux used Charleston as a base for his explorations eastward. He not only sent specimens to France, but is credited for bringing the crape myrtle, tea plant and the camellia to America. Come hear him talk of his travels. Information at or (706) Run the Gardens For the Garden We are so happy to have Half Moon Outfitters and The Small Dreams Foundation return to the Garden this spring with runs that raise money for the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Saturday, April 12 4th Annual Half-Moon Outfitters Cherokee Rose 5K Trail Race This is the only race that is run on the Garden s trails. 5 Tuesday, March 25 Spring Wildflowers of Upland Deciduous Forests of Georgia Visitor Center, Classroom 2 9:00 am 1:00 pm, $50 The cool, moist forests of the Piedmont s ravines and slopes support a wealth of spring wildflowers. Students will learn the botanical terminology to identify and describe plants and will learn the basics of using a technical key to identify spring-blooming plants. We will then visit the Dunson Native Flora Garden and learn a number of spring ephemerals and other early blooming plants. Information at or (706) Sunday, March 30 Afternoon Concert: Classic V Brass Quintet Visitor Center 3:00 4:00 p.m, Free What instruments are in the Classic V Brass Quintet? - 2 trumpets, a trombone, a French horn, and a tuba. Enjoy marches, popular tunes and classical pieces during this lively, free, instrumental brass concert. Information at or (706) Friday, April 4 Friends First Friday: Plant Sale Treasures Visitor Center Downstairs 9:00 am 10:30 am, $12 Shelly Prescott will introduce us to his favorite plants at the plant sale and why they should be in your garden. This monthly event includes a full breakfast and an opportunity to meet new people while learning about the Garden, gardening or garden history. Please make your reservation by Wednesday, April 2 by calling Saturday, April 5 4 th Annual PLANTAPALOOZA! Athens is known as a gardening destination year-round, but when three University of Georgia entities have plant sales from 8 am to 2 pm Athens will the place for gardeners to be! Sales are at The State Botanical Garden of Georgia at 2450 S. Milledge Avenue, The Trial Gardens at UGA at 220 W. Green Street, and the UGA Horticulture Club at the intersection of College Station Road and Riverbend Road. Each sale offers a different experience. Saturday, April 5 Wild Edibles From Forest to Fork Visitor Center, Classroom 2 9:00 am 3:00 pm, $45 Wild edible plants are numerous, bountiful and (usually) free! This course will begin by walking through the trail system at the Garden identifying foods in the wild. During the afternoon, we will focus on how to prepare simple yet delicious dishes with these foods. Focusing on the many spring greens and fresh shoots, we will also consider the (few) truly "dangerous" plants to avoid. Bring a camera and notepad to record identification(s)! This workshop is good for beginners or more experienced gatherers, covering at least a couple dozen species and will include discussions of sustainable harvesting techniques, the ethics of foraging, issues surrounding pollution and safety and how to encourage these plants into your own yards and gardens. Dress comfortably for an extended walk.

6 Saturday, April 12 Family Hiking Club 9:00-11:00am, $5/person or $15 per family Each month at the Family Hiking Club we have a new adventure as we explore the woods, streams, and gardens. Bring along friends and family of all ages to learn about birds, stream creatures, wildflowers and more. Wear comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes, and get ready to explore! Be prepared to hike up to 2 miles on our wooded trails and in the garden. Children must be at least 5 years old. Information at or (706) Saturday, April 12 Spring Wildflowers of the Granite Outcrops of Georgia Visitor Center, Classroom 2 9:00 am 1:00 pm, $50 Georgia is home to 90% of the Piedmont s granite outcrops, one of the most endangered and botanically interesting natural communities in the US. Students will be introduced to the ecology and plants of Piedmont granite outcrops during classroom time. We will then visit Rock and Shoals Natural Area to learn to identify the species in the field and to observe the ecological processes that create and maintain granite outcrops. Tuesday, April 15 Full Moon Hike 8:00-9:30 pm, $5/person or $15/family Pre-Registration is required. Come see nature come alive at night this spring! Information at or (706) Wednesday, April 16 Flower Arranging: Creative and Miniature Design Visitor Center, Gardenside Room 9:00 am 3:00 pm, $45 Unit 5 focuses on Creative Miniature Design. Upon completion of all five units, students will be awarded the Basic Design Certificate from The Garden Club of Georgia. Courses do not need to be completed in order. Taught by Celia McQuaid Brown, Accredited Master Flower Show Judge, The Garden Club of Georgia. Participants will be provided with a list of materials to bring to class. Limited to 20 participants. Information at or (706) Saturday, April 19 Plant Taxonomy Visitor Center, Classroom 2 9:00 am 5:00pm, $105 Plant taxonomy is the oldest science, the science that discovers, describes, identifies, and classifies plants, and is the foundation for all other plant study. This course will introduce the skills needed to name and describe Georgia s native plants. Students will also become familiar with the botanical vocabulary used by plant identification guides and will learn to use a technical botanical key.

7 Tuesday, April 22 Georgia Review s 6 th Annual Earth Day Program Day Chapel 7:00 pm, Free Award-winning writer and environmental activist Ann Pancake will be the keynote speaker at The Georgia Review s sixth annual Earth Day program, to be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, in the Day Chapel at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, with a reception to follow. Supporting sponsors for the event are the University of Georgia s Willson Center for Humanities and Arts, the UGA Environmental Ethics Certificate Program, and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Pancake s talk is open to the public free of charge, but seating in the chapel is limited and people should plan to arrive early; Pancake s books and copies of The Georgia Review will be available for purchase both before and after she speaks. Salves can treat headaches, joint inflammation, bruising, respiratory problems, mood disorders and more. This class will cover making herbal infused oils, base oils for salve making and appropriate herbs and essential oils to treat a variety of symptoms. The class will begin with an instructional walk through the herb and physic garden. Enjoy herbal tea and bread with herbal butter as the instructors introduce the craft of salve making. Tuesday, April 29 Drawing in Nature--Illustration in the Garden with Toni Carlucci (Ages 8+) Visitor Center, Classroom 1 4:00 6:00 pm, FREE Limited to 15 The Georgia Museum of Art presents a workshop on drawing from nature at the State Botanical Gardens of Georgia! Join artist Toni Carlucci to learn some of the secrets to drawing plants, flowers, and other objects of nature using techniques that are fun, effective, and easy to practice at home. Open to children ages 8 and older. This workshop is free, but pre-registration is required. 8 Saturday, May 10 All in The Family: Important Plant Families of Georgia Visitor Center, Classroom 2 9:00 am 1:00 pm, $50 Attend any wedding and you re bound to spot some family resemblances along the pews. Wander through a garden and, if you re observant, you ll see family resemblances there too. You might not know the name of the plant but you ll be able to pick out its relatives and be well on your way to learning its ID. In this class, we will learn about some important plant families, recognizing their characteristics in the classroom or garden and giving you the skills to quickly identify the unknown plants that you might run across. Georgia is full of all sorts of neat creatures that we can learn from. From squirrels to snakes, salamanders to owls, we will meet them and learn what they need to survive in their habitats. Guests from Bear Hollow Zoo and Sandy Creek Nature Center bring their live creatures to the Botanical Garden for us to meet and learn from. Come to this week of camp and leave a Georgia animal expert! June 9 th -13 th : The Plants We Eat Food Food FOOD! Need we say more? Learn what it takes to grow your own delicious produce in your very own backyard, as we water, weed, and taste the fruits and veggies growing at the Botanical Garden and down the street at the UGArden. Campers will concoct delicious dishes, help out in the gardens, taste fresh fruits and veggies, and cook snacks in a solar oven. Come hungry! June 16 th -20 th : Nature Art and Music- During this fantastic week of camp, our gardens and woods will inspire the next generation s Georgia O Keefes and Ringo Starrs as we learn from the natural world to create art. Come join us as we mix our own paints from natural materials, learn from Athens artist Toni Carlucci and drum along with the sounds of nature with Dr. Arvin Scott. June 23 rd -27 th : Forest Explorers Build forts, explore hidden trails, and pretend you are a forest creature, as we learn about the plants and animals who call the forest their home. We will

10 hike, eat wild foods, hide, tell stories, and have a whole lot of fun during this week of exploration! July 7 th -11 th : Water World Want to meet creatures that breathe through their skin, have their stomachs on their feet, and can change colors? Come explore the wacky world of water! Catch salamanders and crayfish in our stream, play water games that leave you soaked, and learn what you can do to keep our water clean. This week of camp is sure to cool you down and excite your imagination! Teen Explorer s Camp, July 14 th -18 th Ages :00am-3:30pm $130/week members receive a 10% discount Are you a budding naturalist or plant scientist? Do you like getting dirty and exploring the natural world? Then Teen Explorer Camp is your thing! We will take field trips to different parts of UGA, where we ll visit the ancient bones of animals who used to walk here at the Natural History Museum, dive underground and see the roots of plants growing in the Root-arium. Sweet Pea Camp, July 21 st -23 rd Ages 3-4 with a parent or grandparent helper 9:00-11:00am $60/week, $30 for each additional child This camp is specially planned for young nature lovers and their parent or grandparent helper, offering a marvelous introduction to the natural world, vegetable gardening, and healthy eating. Each day focuses on a different topic, such The Plants we Eat or A Visit with Old Man Spruce! Programs involve puppet shows, storytelling, outdoor games, nature crafts and tasting different fruits and veggies. This camp provides a great way to spend time outside this summer with your child!
