Our club has been very successful with our fundraisers, Fall Farm Days, Christmas Projects, Garden Projects, Educational Events, and our new projects. We have proven over and over again how fantastic our garden club is and we are very proud of our garden club. I wish to thank each and every one of you who has made Roswell Garden Club what it is today. I hope to see you at the May Luncheon Meeting. 2 FULTON FEDERATION OF GARDEN CLUBS AWARDS LUNCHEON Debbie Vann, Liz Nunley, Dottie Hartford and Carolyn Herndon attended the luncheon on May 12. Darryl Wiseman treated attendees to a fabulous floral design class, demonstrating how to make simple as well as more elaborate designs using our own garden flowers and greenery. Debbie Vann served as auctioneer and photographer. Thanks, Debbie! RGC received several awards from FFGC including CLUB OF THE YEAR FOR Congratulations, RGC! Florence, THANK-YOU NOTE FROM CANINE ASSISTANTS (note received a couple months back) Wanted you to know that I think of you and your team every morning when I arrive at work. Everything looks so beautiful. Thank you for all the hard work and generosity the Roswell Garden Club gives to making our gardens look wonderful. 3 Roswell Farmer's and Artisan's Market Harvest Dinner at Smith Plantation on April 30 RGC was asked to provide eight table centerpieces for this dinner. JoAnn Jones graciously spearheaded this design project. So after our last meeting, several members worked with JoAnn who provided flowers and greenery to get these done in only a few minutes. Other members also brought flowers to use. Thank you, JoAnn and her helpers!! Beautiful designs!! May Attended FFGC awards luncheon. In addition to our on-going community projects, members contributed articles to our newsletter, horticulture tips, created flyers and RGC brochure, wrote grants, baked goods, did Adopt A Road, contributed monetary donations, Ronald McDonald Collect Tabs, donated socks, made Christmas Stockings, and the list goes on and on. 4

5 FIELD TRIP TO FAHRNBAUER S PRIVATE GARDEN WEDNESDAY, MAY 18 Debbie Johnson A field trip is planned for Wednesday, May 18 th, to a private garden in the Milton/Canton area off of Birmingham Hwy. The Fahrnbauer's have several gardens (they own a landscape business), various farm animals and raise bees. Christine will give us a tour and a short talk during our visit. If anyone is in need of a medicinal bee sting, I am sure she would be happy to accommodate you. During our visit last week, she did this for a lady who was in our group. Below are a few pictures I took during my visit. We will meet at Alpine Bakery at 9:45 am and carpool from there. It is minutes travel time. The trip will be about 2 hours in length. There will be an official sign-up sheet at our May 17th meeting for the trip. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested in attending so I can get a tentative head count. Also, please let me know if you can drive. The Fahrnbauer's were kind in inviting us to share their 11-acre farm with us. Please let s have a good showing. Thanks Debbie J PLANT IT PINK GARDEN Carolyn H. planted 24 Vinca and eight Euphorbia plants the last week of April. Several of last year s begonias survived the winter and are growing nicely, so they were placed amongst the other new plants. About an hour was spent planting these. Pinestraw/leaf mulch was added to keep down the weeds. 5

6 POEM OF SPRING Spreading arms out to the sky. Majestic, Splendid to the eye. I sit below, Sheltered safely, rest my weary body, then see, above my head a foot or so, a single bud begins to grow. First I spy one, with closer inspect, a flood of buds I didn t expect. Now I lay me down to sleep fall into Springtime dreaming, deep. And as I rest unknown to me, I m joined by others at this tree. Blades of grass begin to sprout, tiny jumping bugs come out. Dandelions begin to roar and lavish on this grassy floor. Branches take on a heavy load, as apple blossoms in turn, explode. Bees begin to find their way as a buzzing melody begins to play. Which lulls me ever deeper slumber, as bees their count increasing number. As though the invitation read: Do not wake this sleepy head, more of Spring arrived on time. And all that comes with it, sublime. Sugar rushing up from below, filling branches to overflow. Leaves that only moments ago, open to their fashion show. Lovely greens in tones and shades, complement the growing blades. Worms they inch their way along, moving to the buzzing song. Beetles soon begin to light, waiting for some fruit to bite. Crisp red apples come to form as the air around me begins to warm. Still unaware as Spring abounds, the air around me fills with sounds. The chirping Robin calls her mate, who s dressing for his yearly date. A vest of red he will adorn, the cycle of Life again reborn. All this happens as I sleep for Spring has promises to keep. Now a single sound does make Along with Spring I awake. BURT S BEES NEW INITIATIVE The loss of a nutritious habitat is believed to be contributing to a decline in the bee population. How you can help: For every tweet or Instagram you post missing the letter B in the caption and including the hashtag #BringBackTheBees----1,000 wildflower seeds will be planted in your name (up to 2 billion seeds). 9 My Garden Is My Sanctuary Famous Authors Page Link Marie Church Regular Users Page Link As I look out to my garden I feel a sense of pride It really is a lovely room Except it is outside. Where lovely things mix and match And greenery fills the walls The sound of trickling water Coming from the gold fish pond. I love the sight of stones and rocks And driftwood and tree ferns too The sounds of all my chimes I know you would like it too. With pride I walk around my garden And savour each scent and smell Colours of yellow, red and gold Striped cushion on a bench. The bird bath has its own domain It's placed beside a wooden arch Where all the birds come to bathe And drink when they are parched. Ladybirds can hide away Sometimes they come out to see What's happening around them With caterpillars and the bees.
