2 New Cell Phone Number Unfortunately I had to replace my cell phone as it sustained some water damage (don t ask). I would have loved to have kept my old number but this was not possible. Anyway after July 7 th call or text my new cell at (260) Garden Open House We had a very successful garden open house. Thanks to all the volunteers who came and supported your garden area, and thanks to Simone and her crew for the cash and carry plant sale. This year we took in about $1, twice as much (more or less) than last year. I enjoyed the food trucks and Darlene Hackett, the hammered dulcimer player, and seeing you all so proud of your spaces. Thanks to Bill Dietrich for his talk on trees, and thanks to the folks willing to follow me around as I babbled on about weird trees and shrubs. Mulch/Compost and Workday I did have more mulch and compost delivered so we should be in good shape heading into the summer. Our next workday is July 29 th, and we will all hope for a cold front to move in on that day. Spring MG class All the interns passed their exams with an average of about 90%. They were a really fun class, and I am looking forward to teaching the class in the fall of 2017 and the winter/spring of Thanks to the instructors who take their time to teach the new MGs entering our program, and thanks to den mother Gwen for leading the refreshment crew. Phone Response Calls have picked up at the center, and you all are doing a great job of answering citizen questions. The diagnostic folks have helped a lot also. Thanks to you all - you do great work Dates to Remember Workday July 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Workday November 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

3 By AMG Cindy Trygg, Display Garden Reporter (Photos on this page by Cindy) MONET PATHWAY On the last work day I had a chance to visit the Monet Pathway Garden which was going through somewhat of a reconstruction. Bill Oliver was thinning out plants that were crowding out their neighbors. Kris Conner was deadheading and trimming the roses. I learned that the Monet Pathway had removed the roses four years ago due to a fungal disease (yes, we too have problems with plants in the Display Gardens just like everyone else). Those roses were replaced with a more resistant variety and they are looking healthy. But, as a precaution Lauren Iwen gave them a treatment of fungicide that day. I also learned that plants were being added near the water controls by the drive. These plants are blocking off the easy way into the Secret Garden. That means you must now walk through the arches covered with roses and follow the path to enter the Secret Garden. It is a beautiful stroll into Monet Pathway on the way to a resting spot just begging you to bring a good book, your lunch, or maybe even just escape for a few minutes. At the entrance to the Monet Pathway along the drive to the office are two new pots full of annuals. I was told Norman Morales used his discount at a local business to purchase these beauties. They are a beautiful addition to the entrance of the garden. Cindi Newton was helping Bill by picking up the plants he was thinning and sweeping the paths. I also met interns Brad and Janet Hall on this workday. They were recruited to help mulch the plants. That is what happens when you ask if you need additional help in the garden. You are quickly put to work. Other members of the Monet Pathway that I did not get to meet on workday are Sandy Vorhees, Marilynn Toops, Pamela McCulloch, and Norman Moravedc. 4 By AMG Pam Snyder Here it is July already. Time goes by way too quickly for my gardening pleasure! After looking forward to digging in the sweet earth, it seems summer is gone in a flash. Enjoy every moment while the weather permits. There won t be any seminars or classes in July or August so take this time to work in the garden and enjoy the summer. We do have two more seminars coming up this year so be sure to take advantage of these, as they count toward your continuing education hours. If you are missing these programs, you are really missing a lot. Each of the programs we have had this year brought great information and education to us. BONSAI II with Kathy Lee Two years ago we had a Bonsai class with Kathy Lee and her crew and it filled up to maximum capacity. It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot also and we each took home our own bonsai. So back by popular demand we will have Bonsai II on Saturday, September 23 at 1:00 PM at the Extension Office. There will be more details regarding cost and supplies needed in the August ATF. HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENT with Amy Oliver This will be on Wednesday, December 6 at 6:00 PM at the Extension Office. Like the Bonsai class, this fills up very quickly. The arrangements we made last year were beautiful and lasted well beyond the holiday season. The cost of this class and other important details will be announced in a later ATF. Be sure to check the ATF each month for updates and additional information on workshops and seminars. Contact Pam Snyder at (260) or psnyder414@gmail.com for information regarding registration for classes. Also If you have questions about any of these educational opportunities or suggestions for some other class, please contact me. Have you dreamed of having a cold frame? Now may be your opportunity. By AMG Cindy Trygg A friend called me the other day and has 20 old storm windows she will give some lucky person for free. She thought they would make the perfect cold frame and thought of MGs. If this is something you would be interested in, call me, Cindy, at (260) and I will put you in touch with my friend. MGs how would you like to add some free plants to your garden? By AMG Simone Alberding If you would like some plants, please visit the plant holding area and take home plants that are left over from the plant sale. If you would like more information, call me, Simone, at (260)

5 By AMG Peg Erpelding & Luna By AMG Peg Erpelding & Luna Ohio Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis) are often called blue jackets. A herbaceous perennial that can grow from 2-4 ft. tall with grass like leaves that are generally unbranched except at the apex. The center stem is round, the leaves approx. 15 long and 1 across. Blue to purple ish in color the flowers are 1 across and consist of 3 rounded petals, 6 bright yellow anthers and fine spidery violet hairs at the base of the anthers. The flowers open in the morning and on sunny days will close by noon. On cloudy days the blooms are often open longer. Ohio spiderwort blooms generally May into July. The flowers have no scent and grow in clusters with only a few opening at any onetime. After blooming mature seed capsules split into 3 sections and release 3-6 brown seeds. Ohio spiderwort is easy to grow from the seeds, by division or as a plant purchased from a garden center. Spiderwort is native to eastern and central North America. These plants can be found growing from Maine west to Minnesota and south into Texas and Florida. Often found wild Ohio Spiderwort grows naturally in woods, meadows and prairies. These plants grow in average soil that is dry to medium wet and well draining. They will grow in full sun, but thrive best in part shade. These plants are hardy in Zones 4-9. The flowers are pollinated mainly by long-tongued bees, especially bumblebees. The plants are eaten by White-Tailed Deer, Cottontail Rabbits, Box Turtles and livestock which all find the foliage to be non-toxic. The leaves and stems are reported to be edible, cooked or fresh in a salad. History states that the Ohio Spiderwort received it s name because the plant was used to treat spider bites. =^,,^= Memories of South Side Market by AMG Jim Neuhouser When I was a lad my dad was a truck gardener and attended Barr Street Markets on Saturday and had a egg route on Friday. He used to tell of playing world series games on a billboard atop the five story high News-Sentinel building. The City of Fort Wayne closed the market and tore down the two block concrete and tile structure to get more parking for W&D s. My dad attended South Side Market on Warsaw Street for the remainder of his life. Last fall when I was there the wood stoves were burning and two men were singing and playing guitars. I met a lady who knew my dad as she is a granddaughter of Schlup Orchards off Highway 14. She mentioned they would appreciate getting the word out about their farmers market. If you are looking for a great place to shop for fresh foods, look for Schlup Orchards located at 3737 Dicke Road, Fort Wayne, IN Call (260) for hours.
