By AMGs Nina and Dave Thierer, Home & Garden Show Coordinators Plan to come and represent the Master Gardener Program. Please dress in casual business attire (jeans are fine, but please wear a nice shirt.) Remember you will be our representative. Also keep in mind we are located in the lower garden section and we are not far from a big door. So, if you get cold easily, wear a nice sweatshirt, long sleeve shirt or a sweater. Wear comfortable shoes as we do a lot of standing and walking. (We do have a nice matted carpet this year which should help a lot.) We do have chairs, but when selling seeds or working at the front of the booth, there s usually only room for 1 person to sit. WEAR YOUR NAME TAG this is important to get into the show free but if you are working in the booth it identifies you as a Master Gardener. When you come to the show you will enter at the main entrance and go in at the exhibitor entrance which is to the left side. Show your badge. Remember, if you wear your tag as you walk around the show - you are still representing the Master Gardener Program. AT THE BOOTH: We only have room for the assigned workers. We do not have room to store your property before or after you work. If you have family or friends at the show, please make arrangements for a meeting place for after your time at the booth. While working at the booth you can of course keep your coat and your personal belongings at the booth. NO children in the booth. Please keep in mind while working in the booth that we are there to work with the public who will be buying seeds and getting help with gardening questions. If there are no customers, it is ok to visit with each other but please pay attention first to the public. If you can t answer a garden question we will have sheets with the phone number and for garden questions. If for some reason you can t work your assigned shift please let me know. If you want to trade with someone that is fine - but please make sure I know about it. One of the coordinators will be available if you have problems, questions or need something. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or if you can t work. My cell is , my home phone is If I don t recognize your phone number I may not answer right away so please leave a message. Texting is fine also just tell me your name if you text. My is ntteach2001@gmail.com. Thanks! -Nina We, at Byron Health Center, would like to develop a Green Growers Club for our residents and could use the help of an experienced gardener. We already have the gardens and can get needed supplies, but we need your experience and teaching as most of us are not experienced gardeners at all. We would be looking for someone to come and share their knowledge and experience with us for an hour or so on a biweekly basis during daytime hours. Byron is located at Lima Road, Fort Wayne, IN, If you would like more information about Byron and the people we serve, please feel free to visit our website at If you have further questions or are interested in possibly helping us out, please contact Nichole Miller, Director of Life Enrichment, at nmiller@byronhealth.org or ext Thank you!

This year we are making a few changes to the phone response and diagnostics. These changes are to help improve efficiency and consistency. The schedule will look a little different this year as we will be doing phone response in the morning on Monday through Friday. Diagnostics will be in the afternoon on Tuesday and Thursday. Phone response was set up to answer client calls with garden related questions. We also added response to this service. Clients leave voic s or send s, Master Gardeners research, then reply to the clients with recommendations. Any Master Gardener may signup to assist with phone response. Denise Lloyd will work to schedule 2-3 people per shift and make sure someone with experience works with new people. Diagnostics workers must have gone through a previous diagnostics training course. We will work to offer a new training soon to get new Master Gardeners involved. Diagnostics workers help diagnose the samples from our office drop-off diagnostics service before an Educator gives an official response/recommendation to the client. Those working with phone response or diagnostics may report 1.5 volunteer hours for each hour worked in the office. Anyone wishing to work in either capacity MUST attend 1 of 4 callout meetings in the office. This includes experienced volunteers as we would like to address some changes. Meetings will last 1 hour and be held on: March 20 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. March 22 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. If you have questions about the phone response/diagnostics sign-up, please contact Denise Lloyd. If you have questions about the callout meetings, please contact James Wolff. If you cannot make the scheduled times but wish to work, please contact James Wolff to make other arrangements.

By AMG Simone Alberding, Plant Sale Coordinator Time Is Ticking Down! If you aren't thinking about the upcoming Plant Sales, we sure are! Plant Sale Coordinators and planning group are starting to come out of hibernation. I will be receiving a list of volunteers from the late fall sign up form shortly, but if you didn't sign up then, now is the time to get on our volunteer list. The standing rule is you can't work if you don't sign up! Our big two day sale is Saturday and Sunday, May19-20 from noon to about 2:30P depending on crowd. Set up day is on Friday May 18 from 9A til completed, usually noon. The June sale is attached to the Plant Walk on Saturday, June 16, noon to 2:30 and set up day is Friday, June 15 from 9A til completed. Once we get a working list, my telephone guru, Kay Musgrave will begin reaching out to volunteers. We need people to help set up, dig and pot plants, water, sell plants, provide information to buyers during the sales, work in holding area, traffic control, etc.! It takes many people to make the Sales successful and fun for all. Down to the focus of this adventure are plant donations. In order to fund our expenses for our projects we do need lots of plants to make the piggy bank jingle. Please take time to review your garden areas for plants to contribute for the Sale. We need donations from all garden teams that have plants to divide as well as any plants from your private properties. We do have a small digging team that goes to private properties to help people downsize when requested. Perennials, annuals, vegetables, trees and shrubs are all welcome. In addition to plant donations, we happily sell all plant related items such as pots, yard art, books/magazines and house plants, etc.! In other words, if you have a question regarding an item you would donate to sell, please give one of us a call. Closer to mid April, there will be soil available for potting your plant donations. There are plenty of pots back behind the shed in the holding area and name tags will be out on the potting benches for your use. Please remember, you must pot all plants properly and have a name tag with plant type and color if known. Please use the smallest pot appropriate for your planting. Those larger pots use too much of our soil as well as make it hard for us and customers to move around. Any questions can be directed to the Sale Coordinators, Simone Alberding ( or simonekitty@aol.com), Sherri Knisely ( ) or Jennifer Redwine ( ). We are looking forward to seeing all your team donations and working with all the volunteers. Thanks! Simone

By AMG Bethany Beebe, You win some and you lose some. From the gardening perspective, my complete and total lack of success with carrots is at the root of my resolve to find the correction to this issue. Because my experiments with them have not been as successful as I hoped, I am thankful for two things. First, they are inexpensive and available at the grocery year-round. Second, we have research from Extension that can help guide me to better future experiments in growing them myself. A cool-weather crop, seeds can be planted as soon as the soil will tolerate the spring aeration till. According to Michigan State Extension, varieties planted in the spring are often the long-rooted type. The shorter, rounder varieties, prized for their sweetness, are planted midsummer. You will need days planting to harvest, meaning July to October can give you fresh-from-the-garden produce that lasts a long time post-harvest. While we should, of course, always read the package directions for exact specifications, Rosie Learner suggests planting at a depth of 1 to 1 ½ times the diameter of a seed beneath fine soil or vermiculite as a general rule of thumb. Michigan State offered an interesting suggestion for those gardens that have issues with soil crusting over after watering: plant radishes with the carrots. The radishes will emerge faster than their carrot counterparts and break up the soil for the delicate carrot seedlings. MSU also suggests keeping the soil moist until the emergent carrot plant is about an inch tall; watering should be reduced when they are about ¾ grown to prevent splitting. Splitting this recipe in half is not something my family will allow for this cookie recipe they have judged a winner. After all that time in the garden working to grow them, you may develop the appetite for an entire carrot cake; this prescription for carrot cake cookies, however, is the moderation the doctor ordered with all the flavor you deserve. Carrot Cookies Ingredients Bowl 1 1 cup Stevia ½ cup oil ½ cup applesauce 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla Bowl 2 1 cup unbleached, all-purpose flour 1 cup whole wheat flour 2 heaping teaspoons baking soda 2 heaping teaspoons baking powder 2 heaping teaspoons cinnamon 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats, uncooked Add ins 1 ½ cups shredded carrot 1 cup golden raisins

Carrot Cookies, Continued Procedure Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Thoroughly mix together the ingredients listed above in their respective bowls. Slowly stir the contents of Bowl 2 into Bowl 1, incorporating the add ins when the dough is fully mixed. Confession: this may have been the first time I ever actually separated wet and dry ingredients and then incorporated them together. Lazy, I know. Doing it the recommended way seemed to create a more even distribution of ingredients. As thick and sticky as the dough was, I would highly recommend not just adding everything to one bowl, mixing, and hoping for the best as I had done in the past. I tried using a utensil to make neat cookies, but because of the texture and so much presence offered by the add ins, I found simply using my hands more easily formed the 29-cookie yield. Parchment paper was employed instead of the greased cookie sheet suggested by my original recipe. 20 minutes later, my golden-brown snack was ready. A couple other differences should be noted between my recipe and the original (whose URL is listed at the end of my piece). My eaters are not wild about nutmeg or ginger, so I did not include them. I did not include the salt and increased the amount of baking powder and baking soda; I hate flat cookies and the whole wheat would have weighed them down more than I wanted. Other recipes suggested coconut, walnuts, and golden instead of standard raisins as add ins to compliment the carrots. I suspect the basic recipe would be great with your own creative list of additions. Original Recipe: healthy-carrot-cake-cookies/ Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix sugars, oil, applesauce, eggs, and vanilla thoroughly. In a separate bowl, stir dry ingredients together. Blend dry ingredients into wet mixture. Stir in raisins and carrots. Drop by teaspoonful on greased baking sheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Store in airtight container.

By AMG Peg Erpelding & Luna Mini Terrariums, something in gardening for almost everyone! Artificial or real, miniature is definitely in right now and the terrarium is at the head of the pack. Live in an apartment or have a very small, shady yard? A small terrarium might just be the thing to satisfy your gardening needs. Living on a budget? Terrariums can cost as little as nothing to hundreds of dollars, just depends on how extravagant and creative you want to go with it. No idea how to get started creating you own tiny gardening world? You Tube has more tutorials on the subject that anyone would ever want to watch (and then some!). Mini terrariums can begin in many types of containers, although most are growing in some sort of glass object. The hanging glass orbs are very popular and can be seen in garden centers, big box stores and specialty shops. But the makings for your own terrarium can begin not only in a store, but often at home. Glass jars and bottles, a wine glass, ISU Forestry Extension used glass candle jars, canning jars (preferably clear), old aquariums/goldfish bowls of all sizes and even old clear light bulbs are used for a tiny garden setting. You can purchase Wardian cases, actual terrariums from gardening catalogs as well as DIY kits or go on a scavenger hunt in your own home, picture frames can be glued together to make your own case, just about any type of glass container. Plants can be either purchased or acquired from generous fellow gardeners. Small succulents, ferns, bonsai, cacti, mosses and air plants are good plants to go with, depending on the size of your terrarium. The main thing is to do your research on the plants you choose, living in tight quarters they really do need to play well together and must have similar/same requirements as to type of soil, moisture needs and sunlight. Most terrariums do best in an area of the house where they receive some good sunlight to filtered light, especially during the hot part of the day as you can actually cook plants living in glass if put directly into the sun. Once you have your physical terrarium and have your plants and the proper soil it is time to find that video on You Tube to help you thru the planting portion, as always beware as there is plenty of poor information out there, but there is also great info and lots of helpful tips in setting up your terrarium. Once the plants are in place and the terrarium is settled into its place in your house you can have some fun decorating your new garden. Once again, there are loads of accessories in the stores and catalogs, gnomes, fairies and all the necessities for them, or you can do another scavenger hunt thru your house and own back yard. Small rocks and stones, marbles and other small items are easy to come by, glue a tiny clay saucer to the bottom of a very small clay pot and you have a tiny birdbath, the list is endless. There are even books and more video tutorials to help you build your own items to decorate your new garden. Just have fun, enjoy! =^,,^=

By AMG Cindy Trygg, Display Garden Reporter The Purdue Master Gardener Awards Banquet was held on February 5th in the Walb ballroom. The dinner was catered by Mr. G's. There were 91 volunteers that leveled up this year. There was also a new category for volunteers this year called the 200+ Club. Fifteen volunteers were recognized for contributing more that 200 volunteer hours in We also learned that there were 168 volunteers reporting 14,629 volunteer hours in That includes 3,807 hours in the display gardens and 1,680 hotline hours. We also reported 2,716 hours of education for Putting a dollar value on our volunteer time comes to $ 353, Allen County has the highest hours reported per person in Indiana. Give yourself a pat on the back for all of your hard work. Let me take this opportunity to remind you that not everyone has entered their hours in the MG Manager system. Remember too that this is where the statistics listed above come from. So, just think how many hours we will have when everyone is reporting their hours on line. It is not too late to enter your 2017 hours and if you are having difficulties entering your hours, please contact the office. Someone will be happy to help you. Our speaker at the banquet was Dennis Parr. Dennis was a member of the first MG class in He spoke about the produce he raises on his Noble County farm. He raises vegetables and small fruits for three farm markets. Dennis taught us the value of soil testing with his examples of crop loss due to the lack of proper nutrients in the soil. Once he learned what was lacking in his soil and correcting the problem he was able to increase his harvest. He does all of the work on the farm by himself. He said that his wife does attend the markets and helps him there. Badges and certificates were handed out by James Wolfe and Rhonda Smith. Three master gardeners that stepped down from their duties this past year were honored for their contributions, they are Anita Crusoe as the speaker coordinator, Jane Ford as the ATF editor and community garden manager, and Dave Braun who was honored for all of the work he has done on the irrigation system for the gardens at the extension. James ended the evening by announcing that we have a new educator that will be starting on March 1st. He also left us with a challenge to keep up the good work in 2018.

By AMG Pam Snyder I ve been thinking a lot about garden journaling lately. I ve been keeping a garden journal for many years In fact I began my garden journal long before I took the Master Gardener Program. Not only is it a great way to keep track of what you plant and where you planted, but also lots of fun to look back over the years to see what went right and what went wrong. My garden journal also has lots of other little tidbits that I ve kept over the years. I can look back and see what a certain years spring was like; when the first bulbs came up; when the primrose first bloomed and also when different migrating birds passed through and when the Junco s left to return to Northern Canada indicating spring was indeed here. Happy journaling! I m still working on lots of classes and seminars for the 2018 season. Keep an eye on the ATF for upcoming events. ORCHARD MASON BEES with Ron Hite. Ron works in our Prairie Garden at the Extension and loves to share his knowledge of orchard mason bees with the community. Ron will be sharing about the bees in our area with a main focus on mason bees and their unusual nesting habits. Everyone will assemble a basic mason bee house to take home. Saturday, March 24, 2018, 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Extension Office. The cost for this workshop is $4.00, checks made out to Purdue CES Ed Fund. You will need to bring a hammer and a Phillips screwdriver to complete this project. Deadline for registration is Monday, March 19. GARDENING FOR HEALTH with Julie Horney Watch the ATF for additional information on this seminar in upcoming issues. Monday, June 18, 2018, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Extension Office. Be sure to check the ATF each month for updates and additional information on workshops and seminars. Please register with your fee for all classes and seminars at the Extension Office by the registration deadline. Unfortunately, we cannot accept registration or fees at the door for make it and take it classes. Thanks! *If you have questions about any of these educational opportunities or suggestions for some other class, please contact me at or psnyder414@gmail.com. I will be planning the classes for our 2018 season over the next couple of months. Raising Livestock on 1/8 Acre or Less Presented by Advanced Master Gardener and small farm operator Jenny Wyss Would you like to produce your own fresh eggs, meat, fiber, and composted manure? 25 Dear Master Gardeners Coordinators, 2018 Purdue Master Gardener Search for Excellence Award Purdue Master Gardeners are invited to inspire fellow MG s throughout Indiana by sharing the educational impact of a successful project! The Purdue Search for Excellence (SFE) Award recognizes Purdue Master Gardener volunteer work and is modeled after the national SFE held at the International MG Conference. We applaud all the volunteer work done by Purdue Master Gardeners. However, this award recognizes outstanding group projects, rather than individual projects. Applications must show evidence of significant learning by the participants. Purdue SFE applications are due in the Purdue Master Gardener Program state office by March 19, The Purdue SFE has four categories in which Purdue Master Gardener groups can showcase outstanding contributions to their communities.
