I hope that you all have made some great memories while enjoying the warm weather and the flora and fauna of Summer! The Club s business is resuming full speed, although those of you who have been involved in the Squire Rich Herb Garden, Community Garden, Garden Therapy, Home Days, Flower Show preparation, Holiday Show preparation and all of the other behind the scene activities during the Summer, are to be commended for your community volunteerism this Summer. Mary Lou Melena s Nomination Committee has been hard at work putting together an Executive Board voting slate for our voting at our September General Meeting on the 24th. All members are expected to be there to vote in our new Board for 2014! Thanks to the Committee for all of their work and to those who agreed to be nominated. Super job! Also planned for that meeting is a program by Jo Ann Bartsch and Kathy Habib, Master Gardeners. They will instruct us on Flower Show Horticulture information that we all should find very helpful. Please mark your calendars so that you can have time to participate in this event. Flower Shows are one of this Club s gifts to the community and a part of our Club s mission statement to educate and cultivate beauty through gardening and the fine art of flower design. Our October General Meeting also brings a program on how to put your garden to bed for the Winter. Feel free to invite your friends and any prospective members. We are always looking for new faces and friends. Respectfully, Lynne

Each created a design using fresh plant material. The women applied the Principles of Design and the Elements of Design as they completed their artistic creations. The Designs presented were a Functional Table Design, a Topiary Design, a Transparency Design and an Exhibition Table Type II Design. Members were given information on the latest Handbook changes for Flower Shows and tips on basic and advanced techniques to achieve an outstanding design and earn a first place ribbon in a flower show. The program goal was to give members an opportunity to hone their designing skills and gain confidence to enter the Club's October flower show, All Hallows Eve. 5 Page 5 September/October, 2013 Best Of Britain In May of this year I was able to tour Great Britain. This is significant for me because my paternal grandfather was born outside London and my mother is Scotch-Irish. I began my trip in Windsor, where hundreds of the Queen s Swans swim in the Thames River. Only she can grant permission to eat them. Windsor Castle is the residence of the queen and the largest inhabited castle in the world, on a site chosen by William the Conqueror, nearly 1000 years ago. Surrounding the castle is a dry moat filled with a lovely garden. Also on the grounds was the largest clematis I have ever seen. Horse chestnuts were in full bloom in Windsor and in London, They are a different species than our native horse chestnuts (buckeyes), and they are called conkers. The have conker games, where they swing the seeds about. Traveling north to Scotland, the hedge rows which were hawthorn shrubs in the south became fieldstones because the land is rocky and unsuitable for farming. In the south, there are magnificent fields of bright yellow rapeseed. The seeds are used for canola oil and the rest of the plant goes to feed livestock. Clematis at Windsor Castle Scottish rapeseed Please turn the page

6 Best of Britain cont. Traveling on through the Cotswolds and toured Shakespeare s home and the room in which he was born in Statford-upon-Avon. On the grounds was a lovely herb garden. Next stop was the walled city of York with medieval houses and the stately York Ministry begun shortly after the birth of Christ. Not far from York was the ruined Jedburgh Abbey. The evening of arriving in Scotland, the resort had a Scottish night with a piper and dancing and I got to sample Haggis. The next day was a guided tour of Edinburgh Castle, where I had high tea and then walked though the town, visiting the grave of Grayfriar s Bobby and the National Museum of Scotland. On the way to Wales, we traveled through the lake district and stopped in Grasmere, where the poet William Wordsworth ( a host of golden daffodils ) lived and is buried. Next stop was Liverpool to visit the Beatle s Story museum. We spent a few hours in Ludlow, a medieval market town and castle, which still has an outdoor market, Vendors under tents sold olives, cheeses, pastries, meats, fish and household items. Nearby was Tintern Abbey c and on to Cardiff, the capital of Wales. In Cardiff, we toured Cardiff Castle and had a banquet there. The next day we traveled to Bath to visit the Roman baths, 2000 years old and Stonehenge begun in 3000 BC. The Stonehenge monoliths were as large as I expected but the circumference was much smaller. With a bus pass, I rode around London to see the sites and then visited the Tower of London to see the crown jewels, take a boat ride on the Thames to Westminister Abbey and Big Ben and walk around Buckingham Palace. The food was wonderful and I ate in pubs with names like Blue Boar, Ale House and The Black Lion. 7 Page 7 September/October, 2013 Greene Acres Community Garden: How it came to be! Last fall the City of Broadview Heights contacted us with an offer that apparently could not be refused. They had a business within the city willing to provide land for a community garden. And who better to spearhead such a project? Yes, the Chippewa Garden Club. As fate would have it, Lynne Evans and Jo Ann Bartsch had taken a course (called Dig-In) at the Ohio State Extension Service on how to begin and get a community garden functioning. The planning began in earnest with Mr. Bob Greene owner of Air Control Products, Inc. (whose land would become the garden), Ray Mack (Broadview Heights Service Director) and several members of our garden club. The initial meeting served to get us all acquainted as well as put forward all our ideas as to what a community garden should look like, what its mission should be, and how were we going to get it all done in time for a summer 2013 planting season. Meetings throughout the fall, winter, and early spring commenced with a public meeting on April 13, kicking off the Greene Acres Community Garden. We had already tested the soil for contamination and nutrition, we had by-laws and garden rules, we had application packets and we had a design in the works. We signed up 36 gardeners wanting a 4 x 10 plot that morning. By June 17 th, the fence was up and 56 raised beds built and ready for planting. Well, not really ready! Each plot renter needed to put some hard work in prepping and amending their beds. The soil was terribly rocky with annoying clay lumps, and it needed nutrition. Despite the late start, things did grow and we have harvested. Below are some photos from Kathy Ziemba s plot. The garden will continue to improve we re working on getting a shed and compost area built this fall in time for next spring s planting season. Stop by the garden on Towpath Trail (off Broadview Rd., just south of Edgerton) to see what s been done so far. Remember, as a member of Chippewa Garden Club, you are eligible to be a member of the Greene Acres Community Garden. Think about getting your very own plot for 2014! Jo Ann Bartsch
