The Forbidden City Beijing, China The Forbidden City My trip to Peoples Republic of China was a fantastic and marvelous adventure. It was such a pleasure to have a reunion of my family and friends from China, Taiwan and the United States. We traveled together to Beijing, where we had a chance to enjoy the historic sights, authentic Chinese food, traditional Chinese performances. Seeing is believing! The Forbidden City, which is now called the Palace Museum, is in central part of Beijing. It was built between 1406 to 1420, and an integral part of China s history for nearly 600 years. There were 24 emperors starting from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. Years ago we could walk into the each palace and experienced the impressive atmosphere and history. But today, because of the huge tourist population, people are only allowed to step in front of the building to view the magnifi cent interior. Eating traditional delicacies is always a big event, especially in Beijing. We were fortunate to experience a royal banquet at the Emperor s Restaurant where they treated you just like the Emperor. The restaurant offered hundreds of small and unique dishes that only the Emperor could have it in the past. Mmmmmm.Yummy! It is currently under renovation from its predecessor, Tian Le Theater. The theater was fi rst built in 1933 and could hold up to 200 people in the room. This theater used to be one of the old entertainment establishments in the old time. The new teahouse will not only serve tea and folk snacks but have traditional Chinese Folk Art Performances to entertain their visitors. We were told that former American President Richard Nixon visited the theater on his trips to China. Look at my sister in the urn (see photo) she joined in the performance group on the stage! Time fl ew by so fast in the seven-day trip. For every place we visited and each restaurant we ate in, we are now a part of Beijing s history. Our experiences will indeed provide us with beautiful memories that will last forever! Alicia Zhu AAA Cornucopia Pumpkin Planter 24 pieces/case silk design compliments of Apopka Florist Alicia s sister, Shiao Lin, was invited on stage to join the performance where a female acrobat balances an urn (with Shiao Lin inside). 4 AAA Im ports, Inc August 2004 Page 4 Critter Thing of the Month Aurora Borealis My past few articles have been about bugs or animals. This month I am going to write about something I saw when my family was stationed at Minot AFB, North Dakota. The area where we were stationed is very fl at and very windy. In the wintertime the snow would blow across the base causing huge snowdrifts, sometimes so high that you couldn t drive around them. One of my favorites memories is when there was a six-foot drift at our doorway so that we couldn t get out to catch the bus for school! Besides snow, snow and more snow, there s great fi shing around Minot. You are far enough North so that you can view the Aurora Borealis. I saw this just one time, many years ago, but I still have a very clear memory of it. The Northern Lights, as this phenomenon is called, change color and shapes and can be frightening if you don t know what it is. The night I saw the Northern Lights it looked like a giant green fl uttering curtain. It was huge, an unbelievable size seeming to TammyP's Mind Teaser cover one whole side of the sky.
