Tom Biggart is the owner and head grower of Granite Hills Orchids in El Cajon, California, 15 miles east of San Diego. Tom will be presenting the various types of Dendrobiums found in Australia. He will give culture tips on growing the common and uncommon species from this wonderful continent and hopefully convincing everyone why they are the best plants in the Orchid Family to grow in our local climate as these orchids are cold weather hardy and easy to grow. His nursery is a hobby business which means he doesn t make a living growing plants. It is more of a labor of love! Tom loves plants in general, and orchids are his main passion. He is very interested in Encyclias and has a large collection of Encyclia species and hybrids. All Dendrobiums fascinate him also. The Australian cool growers are a current interest. He also has many cool growing Pleurothallids from the Andes. These are more of a challenge in the warm interior valley where he lives with his wife. He is a retired elementary school teacher with orchids as his new students. He would love to have anyone stop by to talk orchids should one be in the San Diego area. In addition, he will bring a few plants for sale Sarcochilus and Dendrobium kingianum and speciosum hybrids. Picture, above, is from Tom s website: Culture Session... Tom will also present our culture session on Dendrobiums. This will cover a broader range of culture topics and be helpful for those new to growing Dendrobiums as well as the seasoned grower. 2 President s Message What a great Spring Show we had! The weather was great, the orchids were beautiful and the show was well attended. Everything ran smoothly thanks to the hard work of our committee chairs and everyone who came to help. Marilyn Hill and Sue Estes recruited and organized the hosts and hostesses. They did a great job of keeping an eye on the showroom and answering questions the public might have about our plants and our society, as well as staffing the plant hotel. Ron Henry and Steve Moeshler organized the set-up of the show, which involved bringing all of our show supplies from storage and returning them. Thank you to everyone who showed up to help with this labor-intensive job. Bob Streeter was able to get excellent judges for our ribbon judging and for CSA and AOS judging. Polly Kinsinger did an excellent job of getting the plants organized for judging and coordinating the judging process on Saturday morning. Polly also managed the set-up of the show room, which looked beautiful. Ann Rogers, Bob Fisher, Sharon Gage worked hard to get everyone s plants registered Friday night. Josephine Balboa, Olga Cutting, Susan Amini, and Laura Ciampaglia were at the Membership and Information table to welcome our guests, answer questions about our meeting, and to sign up new members. Susann Patton worked hard to recruit vendors to sell at our show. Don Goss, our web-master and publicity chair, kept our show website up to date with important information about our show and sent out hundreds of s to people interested in hearing about our show. He designed the wonderful color poster that was the centerpiece of his publicity campaign. The lovely art exhibit in the show room also benefited from Don s talents. Nick Braemer scheduled the speakers who did an excellent job of preparing and giving talks on orchid culture. The talks were well attended and appreciated by the show attendees who were eager to learn how to successfully grow orchids. I also want to thank our members who volunteered to give the talks. Thank you to everyone who cleaned up their plants and brought them in for judging. I also want to thank those who brought in artwork for display. This was a beautiful and successful show due to the efforts of our members. Look for new faces in the kitchen at our next meeting. June Brooks and Joann Green have volunteered to manage the kitchen. Let them know you appreciate their efforts. I want to remind everyone that our April meeting date is changed to the 4 th Friday to accommodate the show of one of the other societies that meets at the Garden. I look forward to seeing everyone on April the 25 th. Cym. 5 More Water Longer and the ¼ Inch Deep Water Tray By Don Goss Last month we had Bill Thoms as our speaker and he was great... IMHO. I thoroughly enjoyed him and his WAFL-HS style of growing where the W stands for, and repeat after me, "More Water Longer." Bill s recommendation for Bulbophyllums is to pot them up using sphagnum moss and place their pots in a tray with a ¼ inch of water. Since Bulbophyllums take up water more slowly, this allow the plant to take up that water over a longer period of time. I know the ¼ inch deep tray of water instruction raise some eyebrows as well it did mine. So, I wrote to Bill for clarification. Since he showed his plans in both plastic pots and wood baskets, I asked about both. In pots, he explains, he places Styrofoam peanuts in the bottom of the pot. The sphagnum moss basically sits on top of the peanuts. Once the pot is watered on all sides and the sphagnum moss is saturated it can then be placed in the ¼ inch deep tray of water. The Styrofoam peanuts keep the sphagnum moss from sitting directly in the water. The peanuts work as a slow acting wick to allow the water in the tray to be taken up slowly by the sphagnum moss. He goes on to write "I don't keep the plants wet constantly, just a lot longer than catts and others. Wood baskets have bottom slats that keeps the majority of the water out but it (the water) will climb up the wood and get to the plant. For those of you who are into semi-hydroponics, this is not earth shattering news. It should however, provide validating confirmation of your growing methods. I have since placed my Bulbophyllums (Styrofoam peanuts in the bottom) in a tray with water per Bill's instructions. It poked at them regularly and did find that the plants were getting "more water longer." I noticed by the end of the week all the water in the tray had been taken up. Given my temperatures and humidity level, I will likely water less frequently to allow the added moisture to be consumed. Additional Notes: Bill Thoms also mentioned a product called Aluminet, a product that provides the benefit of shade cloth and the added benefit of keeping your growing area cooler. A quick search for Aluminet on the Web will provide lots of places from which to buy. If Bill Thoms inspired you to grow more Bulbophyllums, he does have a pricelist. I will bring a few to the meeting. First come first serve! See you then, Don Do you suspect you are under attack but can t identify the pesky pests? Bring your plants to this months meeting for help. 6 People, Places and Things South Bay Orchid Society, Inc. Meets on the third Friday of each month Culture Session at 7:15 p.m. General Meeting at 8:00 p.m. South Coast Botanic Garden Crenshaw Blvd. Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA Next Board Meeting April 29, 2008 The Board Meetings will be held at the South Coast Botanic Garden Crenshaw Blvd. Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA Sunshine Mable Manel would like to hear from her friends, please call or write her. She will be moving soon Welcome New Members Please warmly welcome our newest members. It is up to us, as a society to make all new members feel welcome. Fertilizer Cymbidiums: During the growth season (spring through late summer), high- nitrogen fertilizer, , is used. Dendrobiums: fertilize heavily from when roots appear until top leaf appears on canes. Cattleyas: on a regular schedule. In fir bark, a high nitrogen, High-phosphorus or bloom booster ( ) formulation may be used occasionally (every 4 to 6 applications) to make sturdy growths and promote healthy blooming. When in active growth, plants need fertilizer every two weeks, and when not growing, once a month. Fertilizer can also be applied with every watering at 1/4 recommended dilution. Thorough flushing with clear water every month is recommended to prevent A big warm THANKS to Bill Thoms for his talk, which was well received. Thank you for providing the inspection to grow these lesser known beauties. Bulb. Medusage Cym. (Sir. Glen X Sara Jean) X Touchstone.
