2 News You Can Use page 2 Did You Know What is Happening on Hotline? Nancy Donley noted many questions on fungus and blights. It s interesting that she has found that less than half the people have looked up the problem on the Internet. They seem to need someone to give them a more balanced view and put the information in perspective. Cookie Krizmanich has been directing people to the OARDC website to track Japanese beetles and steps to reduce populations the next year. There have been interesting discussions on use of traps. Jo Ann Pallant had some calls on getting rid of well-established poison ivy. As always, she had to caution not putting limestone on plants, such as spinach, which like acid soil. If only soil testing would come first. Pat Mraz pointed out the calls are coming on spots on tomato leaves. Could be seeing Early Blight or Sephoria Leaf Spot. Carol Norton fielded an abundance of questions on the deer population destroying beloved plants. Sort of a fixation on deer which offer no easy solution for the gardener. Lois Rose reported on flooded backyards and scraggly plants with failure to thrive with cool nights and too much water. Also there are ground cover issues, invasive weeds, and need for dramatic pruning after winter damage to trees and shrubs. Carolyn Vrtunski noted that Hotline advertising and Pat Smith working on publicity seem to have revived calls to the Hotline. Mark your calendars August 10-16, 2015 The CCMGs set up an educational display in the Floral Building and need volunteers to meet and greet the fair visitors and answer garden-related questions. There is so much to see and do at this worthwhile event. Contact Gail Holzman at hikoryhill@roadrunner.com Did you Know That the Cuyahoga County Master Gardeners set up an educational display at the county fair in the Floral Building and YOU can come and get needed volunteer hours while meeting and greeting fair visitors and answering gardening questions. Did You know That the Cuyahoga County Fair started in 1893 and this will be the 119th Annual Cuyahoga County Fair.

4 News You Can Use page 4 Continuing Education Programs In August our program is Raising Chickens in Your Backyard. The program will be held the evening of Wednesday, August 19th, from 6 pm to 8 pm at the home of Dale Guidroz. On Wednesday, September 9th, we will meet at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm for a talk on Ornamental Trees in the Landscape by Charles Tubesing, Plant Collections Curator at the Holden Arboretum. He is responsible for the development of Holden s plant collection, having extensive experience and interest in the selection of appropriate woody plants to fit specific landscape criteria and in plant propagation. You won t want to miss this free program. On Wednesday, October 7th, we visit Green City Growers from 4 pm to 6 pm. This is a special opportunity to see the greenhouse with Shawn Belt, who s been a frequent speaker at Master Gardener events. We are finalizing the details for the half-day workshop at Stanard Farm the morning of Saturday, November 21st.
