1 The gardens of Private Gardenss of the Monaro have been created by successive generations of families living in the homesteads and beautifying the areas around them. The four women who have started PGM are all city girls - three from Melbourne and one from Sydney. None of them had any idea about gardening when they were first married and it was daunting to take over the management of large, well-maintained gardens following in the footsteps of previous generations. The gardens have all been opened for many local charities and events over o the years. The four friends have now decided to open theirr much - lovedd gardens to a wider audience.

2 Hazeldean Hazeldean was established by the t Litchfield family in the early 1860 s and this year iss celebrating its i 150 t th Anniversary. Hazeldean s Merino sheepp and Angus cattle studs are among the oldest and largest in Australia. The homestead, built in 1907, replaced r the original 1860 s building. Inn the 1930 s the house and garden underwent major renovations, designed by Professor Leslie Wilkinson, who also designed many of the buildings at The University of Sydney. The old federation house was remodelledd to a Mediterranean style. The front terrace t was created by the removal of two rooms, and d a fireplace was converted into a pond. The stone stables date from the 1940 s and are still in use today. The garden has been recently remodelled, r with stone retaining walls forming lawn terraces leading out to spectacular vistas of the Monaro.

4 Curry Flat The Curry Flat homestead was built in The architect was G.D. Cochran, who also designed homes on other Monaro properties. Curry Flat s gracious verandahs reflect the lifestyle of a bygone era. The garden itself was designed in 1954 by Claude Crowe, from Berrima Bridge Nurseries. Most of the original design, which he laid out, remains today. The approach to Curry Flat, justt outside Nimmitabel, is a long driveway with w sweepingg views to the homestead, past a lake and expansive lawns. The Jardine family settled at Curry Flat in 1846, and their descendants still s care for the property and garden today.

6 Gunningrah The Maslin family has been raising Merino sheep and beef cattle at Gunningrah since They celebrated their centenary, with a big gathering in the old woolshed. The homestead and garden are nestled in the valley of the Cambalong Creek, C surrounded by deciduous trees and with the entrance framed by large pines. The garden has changed over the t generations, with avenues of Chinesee elms and Manchurian Pears replacing old Acacias and Hawthorns. Stonewalls and hedges provide borders to the garden beds and lawn areas. The original white painted weatherboard outbuildings still border b the west side of the garden near the tennis court. The homestead was built in three sections dating from the 1860 s, 1924, and the 1970 s.

8 Shirley The Shirley homestead was built in 1908 andd designed by architect Henry (Harry) Budden who also designed the David Jones flagship store in Elizabeth St Sydney. The garden was established by John Cottle s grandparents in They commissioned Claude Crowe to lay out the garden. He had a special interest in tree propagation particularly of rare conifer species many of which have flourished at Shirley. A decade later in 1949 a largee lake was created, surrounded by stands of European trees. A little beach and boathouse is a favourite picnic spot for family and friends. In 2006 landscape architect Paul Bangay provided the design for the renovation of the garden that included a sunken, paved courtyard at the rear of the house, two pondss and a parterre garden. Shirley representss decades of work by three generations of passionate gardeners.
