A personal connection to nature and the land has the power to transform a child s life.
Farrington s Mission Farrington s mission is to enhance the well-being of children from low-income communities through a connection with the natural world. Our 75 acres of woodlands, fields and ponds are dedicated to providing respite and inspiration for children who might not otherwise have this opportunity For the last ten years Farrington has been operated as a summer activity site. Nearly 800 children from visiting groups of summer camps and youth programs are able to spend a day exploring the barn, trails, pond and woods, enjoying the open fields, garden, and farm animals that take up residence on-site during the summer months, and engage in arts activities that cement their new connection with nature. Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, water bugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb. Brooks to wade, water lilies, woodchucks, bats, bees, butterflies, various animals to pet, hayfields, pine-cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets. And any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of education. Luther Burbank (American horticulturalist and botanist, )
Our Visitors Increasingly the evidence suggests that people benefit so much from contact with nature that land conservation can now be viewed as a public health strategy. Richard Louv
Farrington 75 Acres of Woodlands, fields and ponds Farrington is less than 30 minutes drive from the center of Boston and 20 minutes from Cambridge on Rt. 2 near I-95/128 in Lincoln. Farrington has 75 acres of wooded trails, open fields, ponds, marshes and hills. It is surrounded by the adjacent Cambridge Reservoir Watershed, conservation land and private homes. The property contains an 18 th century farmhouse, a 19 th century barn with attached buildings and a 22,000- square foot dormitory built in The farmhouse has two residential units; the barn is used for summer program activites and the dorm is currently closed for public use.
Farrington s Heritage Farrington has a 100-year history and a mission to enhance the well-being of low-income children through a connection with the natural world. Originally created in 1907 to fulfill the requirements of Charles F. Farrington s will to acquire a suitable property in some healthy and beautiful locality to which children or others may be sent, for a longer or shorter time to recuperate their health and draw new life, physical, mental and moral, to meet the responsibilities that may come to them. Farrington is located on 75 acres of woodlands, fields and ponds in Lincoln, Massachusetts.
Charles F. Farrington, a wealthy Boston businessman, willed part of his 1907 estate to establish in or near the City of Boston, a vacation home for needy children and others. The first trustees used his legacy to buy Oak Hill Farm in Lincoln, MA, and to build a large, brick dormitory on the hill above the farm. For 30 years, Farrington Memorial provided a residential program for poor and undernourished girls. Some 30 girls at a time stayed for about 3 weeks. During this time more than 5,000 girls received sunshine, good good, loving care and gentle surroundings. For 50 years folowing WWII, the City Mission Society of Boston used the buildings and land for a variety of camps and groups. From 1984 to 2004 Gould Farm ran a yearround residential mental health program for young adults at Farrington. Farrington s History
