The project will begin mid- September and continue into October, when the weather is cooler for flowers. No tools are needed as they will be provided for our use. There is security provided by both private and Detroit Police. Remember we get volunteer hours for our certification. Also, anyone who has extra plants they wish to donate, we can use them. For further information please contact: Marianna Browne at missmgarden@aol.com New Opportunity A Healing Garden A Healing Garden located at Jefferson Avenue in Harrison Township is seeking Master Gardener Volunteers interested in helping to build a Butterfly House at the back of the garden. Help is needed in determining what flowers are needed and how to go about building the house. Once the Butterfly House is completed, there is the opportunity for providing an 3

4 educational program on butterflies and bees and why they are important. Please contact Rhonda Lapik- Ochoa at or call her at for details. An estimated 3-4 volunteers may be needed and tools will be provided if a list of what is needed is presented. US Army Garrison The request has come in for help for this garden which is used for educational purposes. The US Army Garrison-Detroit Arsenal 4-H club is looking for volunteer master gardeners to assist us with the maintenance of our children's gardens during the summer. Our summer camp programs start on June 20 and end on Sept. 2, Staff who have 4-H garden training will be maintaining (watering, dead heading, weeding, harvesting veggies) from the gardens on Tuesdays and Thursdays but additional help during the week would be greatly appreciated as there are some Tuesdays and Thursdays that activities prevent gardening from happening. We have children and youth between the ages of 6 weeks and 18 years of age in our youth programs. Most of the youth who will be assisting in the garden are school age and middle school age (5-14). Volunteer master gardeners DO NOT need to work with youth or children...they can just come and work in the garden. However, if they do want to work with kids and gardening, they can as well. They will have to be background checked and take a child abuse prevention training. They could continue volunteering into September and October if they like (no kids but just in the garden). Teresa J. Brodsky US Army Garrison-Detroit Arsenal Youth Programs Director Work Cell (586) Desk (586) Teresa.j.brodsky.naf@mail.mil Packard Proving Grounds The Packard Proving Grounds located at Van Dyke (west side of Van Dyke, between 22 and 23 mile road) is looking for Master Gardener Volunteers. This historic site has a lot of volunteers that work onsite and they could use some guidance with planting methods, locations and ongoing care of plants. Also, we are looking to help restore some of the original types of plants to the grounds and could use some assistance and guidance on plant identification, creating an overall site plan as our budget allows. Volunteer help is needed April through October once a week or as available. Shovels, rakes and garbage cans are available, but volunteers will need to bring any other tools they need. Please contact Mary Anne Demo at maryanne@packardevents.org if you are interested in volunteering. This project will also be added to the project list on the VMS. 4
