The Mae Blanton and Dallas Area Branches hope that each and every one will attend our 2010 SWR Get-Together. Our goal, to have an unforgettable reunion of all our family members. The plant sale will be exciting with loads of begonias propagated just for our reunion. 3 2010 SOUTHWEST REGION GET-TOGETHER Our Family Reunion Get-Together promises a wonderful time to meet with all our Begonia family both old and new. We hope that it will be a time to renew all our friendships and create new ones. It will be of interest to all who love begonias. We will be concentrating or highlighting the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. The Garden celebrates 75 years since being named the FWBG. The National Park Service announced that the garden has been named to the National Register of Historic Places. FWBG is the first botanic or arboretum in Texas to be individually listed on this prestigious roster. The Garden is the oldest botanic garden in Texas. It is a 109 acre lush garden with more than 2,500 species of native and exotic plants that flourish in its specialty gardens. We are honored that the Fort Worth Botanic Garden welcomes us for our family reunion. TOURS and EVENTS Wednesday May 19, 2010 We will begin on Wednesday evening May 19 with a social at the home of Kay and Cary Jennings. Their home is just off Hwy 30 and near to both the hotel and the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. We will have a very good time visiting with all our Begonia Family. Directions are included showing their home location. Thursday May 20, 2010 Please note: All plants to be entered for competition must be registered at the gardens between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. today, Thursday May 20, Thursday morning we will begin our tour of the Begonia exhibition house and Millie Thompson s library. This will be your first hand opportunity to wonder at just how Millie could (with out the help of computers) collect, categorized everything Begonia. You will be amazed at the stock pile of information documented down to the last detail. Adjacent to the Library is the exhibition house which exhibits begonias for the public in an informative and educational manner while displaying all the beauty that begonias can portray. Then we will walk a short distance to the Japanese Garden. This garden was six years in the making and is a major addition to the Botanic Garden since the original development in and was designed by Kingsley K. Wu. The Ryoan-ji garden is indicative of the symbolism that is found in the life of the Japanese. While we enjoy a lunch in the pavilion we can admire the exotic imperial carp (koi) in the pond. If you wish, feed them a few pellets while surrendering to the mystery and enchantment the gentle breeze and shady stone s encourage. After our delicious lunch we will begin our walk through the gardens (alternate transportation will be provided for those who wish) A few gardens are included here.

4 LOWER ROSE GARDEN Classic European elegance and grandeur is the hallmark of the Lower Rose Garden. Inspired by the Italy's renowned Villa Lante and accentuated with vista views, this garden is a natural for weddings and garden parties. Thousands of supple rose blossoms create an environment that both excites the senses and soothes the soul. OVAL ROSE GARDEN Recently renovated (January 2002), this historic rose garden will enchant you with its classic design, charming gazebo, and, of course, hundreds of roses. Powerful architectural structures fuse seamlessly with botanical elements, enticing you to explore and ultimately understand the spirit of this garden that echoes the everchanging stages of life Friday May 21, 2010 We will tour the FWBG Begonia Species Bank green houses. The Begonia Species Bank is the largest collection of Begonias in the U.S. It was established specifically to perpetuate the begonia species. Debbie Garrett will lead us through the Begonia houses assisted By FWBG volunteers who devote enumerable hours just to begonias in the Begonia greenhouses. Now it s on to lunch at the Gardens Restaurant. The menu is very appealing and this is a chance for all of us to gather (we hope every one will attend) and to honor the Show judges and their clerks. Yes to thank them for all their hard work which we will see in the finished project. (A very short ABS/SWR Board meeting will follow) E.E. Smith Trip will assist us on a tour of the newest addition to FWBG, the Conservatory (Tropical) Greenhouse. Finished in 2008 it is a state of the art green house which now houses hundreds of tropical species as well as hybrids. Most notable are all the wonderful orchids and ponderosa Lemon trees.the profuse aroma that permeating the air is memorable in itself. Afterwards we will enjoy hands on seminar given by the very talented Tom Keepin. Under Tom s expert direction we will learn how to mount a begonia and take our very own work home. Debbie Garrett the curator of the Begonia Species will give us an informative over view of things at the Begonia green houses. In the evening the Plant Show Opens where we will admire all our babies at their best followed by the Plant sale which as tradition dictate is open to members only. There will be hundreds of begonias propagated just for this event.

5 Saturday May 22, 2010 SATURDAY will begin with Dr. Rekha Morris telling us about her latest adventure to the Himalayas. We are very excited to hear all the details of yet another trip seeking the rare and unusual begonias that she brought back. She is truly an explorer of the new world. Then John Langevin who is in charge of the Conservatory will speak on the functions of same. This is a good presentation to hear as we will Next tour the Conservatory with its hundreds of rare and exotic tropicals and of course all the begonias that are tucked into numerous nooks and crannies. After lunch on your own. Don Miller who is no stranger to any of us will speak on how Begonia are used as Herbs all over the World. Then Debbie Garrett will feel us in on everything Begonia and what is in the works for the Species Bank Greenhouse. BE SURE TO PICK YOUR PLANTS UP AFTER 3:00 TODAY The awards Banquet at the Hotel Trinity will be a wonderful time for all of us to gather and just revisit old times.it will be a time to catch up with our family both old and new. The food will prove delicious. The view is spectacular. Bruce Boardman will MC and Cynthia Richie will give a short talk on the history of SWR. We will have a tremendous time at the auction which is already gearing up with some very special items that will go to the highest bidder. SWR Awards will be given.

6 DALLAS FORT WORTH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (DFW) Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is the airport used when traveling to Fort Worth and is approximately miles from the hotel Trinity taking about 26 minutes travel time.
